I feel bad for Sens fans. Obviously a trade because of the owner not having deep enough pockets. Bad trade.

Where do Sens fans feel your team is realistically at? Legit question, it seems like a futures for immediate help kind of trade. Are you closer to competing or closer to rebuilding/retooling?

Seems quite short sighted of Ottawa. Yeah they're marginally better in the short term, but they gave up some potential for the future.

I dont think this team is any closer to a playoff spot still. I'd wager Brassard isn't going to have a very large window as a ~60pt center

Why do you think Brassard will retire at 31?

Brassard will be 29 when he starts 16-17, he will be 31 when he starts 19-20. He will be 35 should he start 23-24. You were off by 2.

Brassard has only been a top 2 center for 2 years and a marginal top 2 the year before that. I doubt very much he is a top 2 when he is 32 and White is 22.

Not happy about the age difference between the two, but Brassard is a much better fit in our top 6 than Zib is. Stone and Ryan will probably mesh with a passer like Brassard more than with Zib. Helps that he's a lefty as well.

A lefty center we needed, in his prime, who happens to be cheaper and a hometown guy, how are we going to cope with this.

Yep, and it's not like we have more centre depth coming through the system that made Zibby's age less of a factor (spoiler alert: we do).

This is a high quality honest post, dont see this too often. :handclap:

How is Brassard in the shoot out? Zibby is money, he definitely had a hand in getting the sens a few extra points.

Not a shootout guy and was hardly picked. Hockey reference says he hasn't even been used in the past two seasons (don't know if it hasn't been updated or if he was just never picked to go but I honestly can't remember the last time he went).

Obviously the shootout is a more minor factor when evaluating Zibanejad as a player but the Rangers have been a flat out disaster beyond Zuccarello in shootouts recently so that's a nice little plus. Stepan isn't a bad option but beyond him, everyone else is horrible at it (Nash and Kreider especially).

The Sens currently have their best roster since 2007. This is a great trade.

Playoff Bubble team. They lack depth so if they get hit with injuries they are not going to the dance.

MacArthur - penciled into top 6 has played only a handful of NHL games in about 20 months.

Anderson is 35 and a bit prone to injuries. Hammond is the backup and the AHL goalies are not NHL ready.

They have 4 top 4 defenseman and 5-6 are not going to be guys you can see taking guys spots, they are 5-6 that is all.

If they don't get critical injuries, then they can be a 1st round home team perhaps.

I was actually referring to your comment that Ottawa only wins this trade for the next 2 years. Because for that to happen either Zibanejad would have to improve significantly (possible but with his work ethic I'm betting against it) or Brassard retires.

Thanks, seems like the potential is there, hope it works out for you guys (well maybe not I'm a Leafs fan)

I really have mixed emotions on this. I worry about Zibanejad in NYC, and Brassard has been very good for them. Also Zibanejad's next contract when he hits RFA could make the "cap savings" in this deal moot. These kind of deals have blown up on the Rangers before.

People are looking at this as a hockey trade when it clearly is not. Ottawa clearly has no interest in building a real contender, as a contender costs money. Melnyk doesn't want to and won't pay for a contender. He, like Jeremy Jacobs in Boston unfortunately, is more worried about playoff gates than a Stanley Cup. A squeak in at the lowest possible cost is the real goal here. Brassard for ZB accomplishes that.

Why do the Sens do this? seems like a very very minor upgrade in terms of offense and overall game for a player 5 years older and more expensive?

Exactly. Pierre Dorion needs to explain his thinking in great detail, because forgetting the fairness of the trade, how does this trade get the Sens closer to true Cup contention? Especially at the expense of a good young player who hasn't fulfilled his potential yet. Players like Mika should either be kept, or only be dealt as part of a package for legit impact/core players. Bassard is nice, but true difference maker? Come on...

Bad job here.

Yep I think this is 100% correct.
