When did I say the Myers deal was good? I consider it worse than Troubas deal, but not terrible either. Slightly more of an overpay for Myers.

I wasn't saying you liked the deal, but it's the current UFA rate. Rangers effectively bought out 6 UFA years. Again, not calling it a bargain, but I think it's a solid signing.

I think the cap going down is a real possibility over the next few years until the next CBA so don't be so sure this will be fine. The players have been escalating the cap for years, and now are regretting it with so much going to escrow.

edit: To clarify, I mean that the next CBA after it's finalized could possibly lead to a reset cap lower than today's cap.
If the cba lowers the cap (owners get more than 50 percent) then teams will get compliance buyouts again

Seems like a lot, but it's not really in the long term.

He had like no leverage though, which is why this is surprising.
I guess New York wanted him to appear as a cachet player for them, though, and didn't mind paying him a bit extra to see if some extra confidence translated to better performance/leadership.
He absolutely had leverage. If he goes to arbitration we can only accept a 1 year deal, and then if we couldn't negotiate a contract we're trading a rental at deadline to another team knowing he's testing the open market. If we keep him, he can still test the free market and create a bidding war if he wanted. So, he did have leverage being a year away from UFA status.

He currently has the 5th highest cap hit among Dmen:

I like that he's youngish but this is hardly a slam dunk.

"By the time his deal ends..." Thats 7 years from now... holy hell is the public school system failing.

You honestly don't think there will be 20-25 defensemen making more money than him in 2025? Again, never said this was a wonderful bargain deal, but the money is fair and age range is great 25-32. I'd have rather given him the 6 million Myers I making, but that wasn't happening. He'd probably sign for 9 million or more as a UFA. next offseason.

So every single NJ fan wanted to trade for Trouba? Way to smear an entire fan group based on one person’s remark.

How is that a smear? hell, nearly everyone on this board wanted their team to trade for Trouba..even moreso when they found out what we had to give up to get him.

You're acting like I said something horrific about Devils fans.

Mostly fair, all things considered, but man oh man, curb your expectations on him Rangers fans. He's not as good as you might think.

I think he's a solid #2. I don't think anyone is expecting prime Chara or Pronger. He is what he is. Money is fair, shouldn't be an awful retirement contract... no complaints, but I'm not throwing confetti out of a Manhattan window either. I'm just shocked at the negativity.

You used he word “all”. You didn’t make your comment to suggest that the other poster was being reasonable. You did it to suggest NJ fans were somehow either jealous or at least had no grounds to comment negatively on the extension. You don’t know if that poster was a fan or detractor of Trouba. Your insult wasn’t harsh but still unnecessary and you painted an entire fan base with a broad brush stroke.

I have no doubt that NYR knew going into the trade that Trouba wanted a long term contract in the 7.5-8M range. They still made the trade and got Trouba signed at the higher end of the deal. Both sides should be happy this got done.

We will find out this year if he is a 1D or not. He will not have the advantage of playing with/behind Byfuglien or Morrissey so should be a true test of his skill.
