... Hopefully NyR buy out Shattenkirk. If they buy out Smith too it would help

I still think these guys can be traded, with retention as summer goes along. Then financial aspects to NYR would be equal each season, and not extended.
Teams need D depth and these guys are known.
Some will sling Smith bashing, but he's not as bad as his '17-18 season was, he's a useful complimentary D, he's just overpaid.

Is Trouba really all that different from the Yandle or Shattenkirk that the Rangers acquired? At the time they were 40-50 point guys who were nothing special defensively.

You used he word “all”. You didn’t make your comment to suggest that the other poster was being reasonable. You did it to suggest NJ fans were somehow either jealous or at least had no grounds to comment negatively on the extension. You don’t know if that poster was a fan or detractor of Trouba. Your insult wasn’t harsh but still unnecessary and you painted an entire fan base with a broad brush stroke.

Lmao ok

Stylistically he's much different than both and also younger than both at the time of acquisition.

So yeah, I'd say there is a pretty big difference than Yandle or Shattenkirk. If he ages like Yandle this will be a fantastic deal.

This buys 6 years of UFA. In this salary inflated market, you can't tell me that Trouba would get $8M or less as a UFA on the open market.

This is a good deal.

The clause/salary structure is also great.

Why exactly? Deangelo was great and is definitely PP specialist that got "replaced" by Trouba. My thinking is that keeping DeAngelo as second pair PP is not optimal solution, dude needs 1st pp time, and 2nd pair ES time.

He can get both here.

He's most likely the 2nd RHD on the roster and he'll get PP time on either one of the units, both PP units should be pretty good as they have a ton of ammunition to go around.

Good job Rangers. The way they traded away their assets before their value bottomed out and got a ton of picks and prospects very quickly and now stealing Trouba in a trade and landing a big time free agent in Panarin with all those young prospects coming up behind them. This is the blue print.
Ah yes the classic "Original 6 team based in one of the biggest and storied cities in the world so we attract the biggest names" blueprint. They earned this one.

Im not confident that Deangelo gets the PP time, I think Trouba is going to play 1:50. Just because his name is Trouba and he earns 8 mil a year in New York.

That's bound to be the worst contract in the league, let alone for a defenseman. He, Kane and Ladd are ex-Jets with horrible contracts to date.

I think the cap going down is a real possibility over the next few years until the next CBA so don't be so sure this will be fine. The players have been escalating the cap for years, and now are regretting it with so much going to escrow.

edit: To clarify, I mean that the next CBA after it's finalized could possibly lead to a reset cap lower than today's cap.
That's not gonna happen, not with the TV deals, stadium series, expansion, not even remotely possible. Especially for a league who says they are growing rapidly. Also players seeing other leagues signing 100s millions dollar contract. Just don't think they would ever do that unless the league gets flipped over and revenue is dry. That doesn't look to be the case anytime soon.

No he won't.

I really hope you are right m8. And Thanks for answering your thoughts. Im just a bit DeAngelo fan and hate that Rangers got Trouba because I think DeAngelo has Krug level upside (on PP). Not saying he will get there, just saying the potential is there.

EDIT: Now I kinda feel he is getting "wasted" on that blueline.

Lol. We set the new bar folks. This is now one of the worst contracts in the league. Ironically Neal and Lucic just got swapped but maybe it should have been a three way trade with Trouba.
