The whole team is +20/30 and he’s -2

If you want a bottom line guy that’s got energy and not much hockey sense, that can chip in a few goals, he’s your guy.

Mmmm.... sounds like Gauthier with more steps.

Which is an upgrade cuz Gooch can't score.

Imo it looks like Florida will be getting Chychrun. Tippet + 2023 1st is what I think the base of the deal could look like with potential an add or two.

If they do get him, man, they are gonna be tough to beat when 3 of their Top 4 would be Ekblad, Weegar and Chychrun

Why does NYR do this?
Really? This is the perfect trade for NYR

We have no one who can actually shoot aside from Zib and Panarin. Kreider can score as well but he can’t shoot

Vatrano gives us a finisher for the middle 6 to improve our offensive depth. With Kakko out for the past month+ and Blais being out pretty much the entire season we’ve relied too heavily on our primary scorers. Guys like Hunt and Gauthier are in the middle 6 getting prime chances to score but can’t finish. Vatrano is likely for the 3rd line to play with Chytil who has struggled this season. Chytil is a speedy north-west center who’s primarily a playmaker.

With a fully healthy offense, here’s our lineup with Vatrano. Vatrano pushes Hunt out of the lineup who’s been whiffing prime chances on the Panarin-Strome line

Kreider-Zibanejad-Lafreniere
Panarin-Strome-Kakko
Vatrano-Chytil-Goodrow
Blais-Rooney-Reaves

I had been under the impression NYR essentially had too much depth. If not it makes sense.
Here's a more complete answer than you've gotten so far, which should explain your misperception.

The Rangers went into camp with essentially 10 top-9 caliber players. Kreider, Zibanejad, Panarin, Strome, Kakko, Lafrenière, Chytil, Goodrow, Blais, Kravtsov. They also had two guys with outside shots at a top-9 role: Gauthier and Barron. So let's call it 12

-Barron isn't ready (11)
-Gauthier had a far superior camp to Kravtsov, who had a minor injury and they wanted to get him some conditioning.
-Kravtsov was sent to Hartford, refused to report and went to Russia (10)
-Blais had a season ending injury (9)
-Gauthier has not been able to translate the work he did in camp into any production (8)
-For almost every single other game this season, since early December, 1-2 of those 8 have been injured... right now it's Kakko (6-7)

This was a perfect move for them. In reality, they probably need to acquire one more forward since Kakko is still at least a week away from getting back to skating.

Good, don't worry about the 2nd place team in your division improving when you root for the 3rd place team in the division. Makes total sense.

This was the lineup that they faced when the Pens won 1-0 at home:

Vatrano is better than 6 of the guys on that lineup. They just played yesterday with Johnny Brodzinski on the 3rd line. Hunt is still on the 2nd line.

Rangers got space and aren't done.

4M dollar Goodrow on the 4th line? I'd put him on the 3rd line LW since the playoffs is where he shows his worth. Him and Vatrano on the 3rd line would be solid together.

Despite how it was listed, the Goodrow-Rooney-Reaves line was the 3rd line in that game. They played as much at 5v5 as the Zibanejad line did.

3rd line going forward barring any other moves (which I’m sure NYR will be making) should be Vatrano-Chytil-Goodrow. Perfect blend of scoring, playmaking, and checking for a 3rd line. If Chytil can bounce back to last seasons form it can be a great 3rd line which really is just what this team is missing

Vatrano is pretty bad. His shot is great, everything else leaves a lot to be desired. Scored some clutch goals over the years, and is the king of empty netters.

Especially when the fourth is Forsling.

They could actually use Forsling/Weegar more defensively and let Chychrun/Ekblad rack up goals.

He’s a de facto upgrade over Hunt and McKegg and that’s all we NYR fans care about. We have two important forwards in Kakko and Blais out. McKegg will never see NYR again once we’re fully healthy with Vatrano in the mix. For our lowest 4th round pick it’s a win. Especially when we have 32 million in cap this deadline. He automatically becomes our 3rd best shooter after Zib and Panarin

Not to mention his 5v5 numbers are strong which we need more of along with his speed and shot threat.

Definitely seems likes everyone wins in this trade.

Both Florida and the Rangers get what they need out of the trade and Frankie likely gets more ice time.

This game, they used the 4th line like the 3rd line. That 3rd line was just brutal. I think they got 6 minutes. Wouldn't fly in the playoffs.

In a vacuum, price paid for player is good bargain bin hunting.
Unfortunately, it will cost more than McKegg + Hunt $ to extend so unless we win the Cup and he is instrumental, which odds are against, it will be a waste.
Exception would be if Trouba lets us deal him early, but that is also long odds.

don't worry we got Jonny Brod signed. chuckling that a McKegg, Hunt, Frankie V salary comp has to bring in Trouba.
