Additionally, this season with the division we were in, 5th place is slightly above expectations.

IT WAS A 56 GAME SEASON!!!

I have been saying this from the beginning whether it was Pettersson's horrible start to the season or Zibanejad or Lafreniere or Carter Hart...

anyone who takes anything away from this season and makes any drastic decisions based on anything that happened is pure lunacy

THANK YOU. I don't know why some people are willing to be embarrassed and humiliated rooting for them going forward. Why? What have any of those picks done so far? He's handed Quinn the reins and they've totally sat back and watched. No leadership all year from THEM and the roster, with their handling of the DeAngelo fiasco, Panarin, lack of leaders in the room, etc. I don't know why so many believe Davidson and Gorton are infallible.
I’m not sure how you can’t see an owner doing some rash thing as bad for the team going forward.

thanks for guessing about Drury and being he’s the GM he has everything to do with Gorton. They’re related, that’s why you made the post.

It seems as if you're saying because I think Gorton was overrated, I should somehow think Drury will be bad as well. Doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

My "guess" about Drury's success is just that: a guess. They are two separate statements of opinion. I believe that Jeff Gorton was overrated. I also believe, separately, that Chris Drury will probably do a decent job as GM.

If you're saying that because I think Gorton was overrated, I should not rush to judgement on Drury, I'm not. There's nothing to judge Drury on yet because he's been the GM for all of two hours. I'm simply stating my opinion.

Or, assuming messier is getting a job here, president is the only spot for him. No experience coaching or managing. JD had to make way. Drury got the GM. They will go with experience, or bring back Keenan or Torts, at coach.
Was thinking it’s odd they gave Drury both President and GM roles. They could have left President vacant or had Slats step in until they find a new one, assuming they are planning on a new one. Seems to me Drury is now a president looking for a GM. Am I misreading though?

I'm oddly okay with this. Shocked as hell, but not upset by it. I was feeling a lot of the same way expressed here in Larry's article:

We’re told that after four years out of the playoffs, Dolan had begun to question the administration of the program whose long view does not exactly jibe with the roster whose marquee players Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider, will be between 28 and 30 when next season commences and are likely to be diminished by the time the promise coalesces.

I felt like, by the time we get this train moving, these marquee vets are going to be a lot older and a lot more diminished. Something was stinking up the place. They seemed significantly worse to me this year. Just my two cents.

It's the bait and switch of the millenium. Look, we're rebuilding the right way. 3 years of no playoff hockey, but it's all going in the right direction. Look at all the talent. Sorry fans, FU. We're trading it all for big contracts and track records. It's disgusting is what it is. Just disgusting.

Yeah but who said this was happening?

This is the type of hysterics that make this place exhausting sometimes.

By the way we just completed year 4 of the official rebuild but many would say it went back a year farther. Not one prospect we’ve drafted has become an impact player.

and we’ve had 4 top 10 picks in that time.

this is not ok and it’s not the kids (except lias who’s a joke)

our two best players forced their way here.

Gorton has put this team in the hands of an absolute novice clearly in over his head and he’s done nothing but sit back and watch.

couldn’t find a captain after giving the last one away for two of the worst players in the league

Brendan Smith of all people has had to become the adoptive parent of them all because we put no real veterans in the room

if he didn’t have the owners back when he’s the only one trying to protect OUR players then f*** him

Why the f*** is this novice that's over his head still here? If you want to say that was enough to fire Gorton (I disagree you won't getting every coaching hire right and I'm Quinn's biggest hater) then why is he still here?

I'm leaning toward President --- in a Shanahan type role.

Coaching wise I'll be shocked if DQ isn't done. But I don't have a candidate in mind.

I'd say there's a decent possibility you're looking at an Edmonton connection.
Wouldn't McTavish be some ironic shit lol...

Room having issues bc the TDA situation makes the most sense to me... plus that's literally throwing $5M/yr of Dolan's money away because you couldn't manage a player you already knew couls be an issue. Every single buyout is legit just throwing away millions of dollars. I don't blame him one bit.

There's a part of me that looks at everything and puts together this story:

- Jeff Gorton came in around the 2016 season and fairly quickly started tearing things down.
- Over the course of a few years, Stepan and Brassard were traded, Girardi and Lundqvist were bought out, Staal was sent away. Basically the entire leadership core of the last cup contender is gone.
- "The letter" was sent out.
- With the turnover, Gorton made a number of astute hockey moves at the cost of culture.
- There were a number of stop and starts/incidents with prospects and young players, including Andersson, Kravtsov, and DeAngelo.
- David Quinn, a developmental coach, has the support of Gorton and JD despite getting inconsistent effort and development from the team.
- The Wilson incident happens, and Gorton pushes back because it limits his ability to make hockey moves and operate in the league.
- Dolan looks at all this and concludes that while Gorton is a smart hockey mind and has succeeded in building a very talented collection of pieces, he is not equipped to make the sometimes "sub-optimal" moves that will help turn the collection of talented players into a winning team with a winning culture.

Then I remember we're talking about Dolan and wonder what I've been drinking.

Not to mention that if I recall, management wanted Girardi to run his contract out at least one more year -- Gorton was insistent on pushing him out quickly to make room for Shattenkirk.

It was a good move on paper, but obviously this had some major issues

Holy Shit!

I can't believe these Men were let go before Quinn. I haven't been the most informed, but you folks have provided some insight for me this Season. That, combined with my own observations, see Gorton's rebuild as one of the templates that most NHL Franchises should follow.

If there's a GM School, it should be one of the examples in the Curriculum, IMHO.

As a Canucks fan, Gorton moves to the TOP of the list of available GM's I hope we hire once Benning is fired (please).

As for JD. I do not have the insight to understand this dismissal either other than to connect it to the Statement issued. I loved JD as a Goalie growing up (one of the coolest masks), thought he was an amazing broadcaster and am just mystified by this termination. The man will be unemployed only as long as he wants to be.

As for your question/request. Yes, I'll join your GDT tonight.

f*** Tom Wilson

The summoning worked.

I'm not sure how so many fans can appreciate the front office accepting what happened the other night and icing the softest team in hockey that will never win a playoff round as currently constructed but whatever
They would have made the playoffs in every other division.

If you want to say the roster is soft than fine but you don’t blow up the brain trust and all the trickle down effects that come with it because the team is soft in shortened season

That was pretty dumb.
