so Gorton is overrated yet Drury, with no experience, will be fine. Thanks

Gorton was overrated, yes. I also believe (this means it is not a statement of fact or of certainty) that Drury will do fine, yes. Those two things are not really related, so I'm not sure where you're taking issue with my statement, with all due respect.

The insane thing is today's official statement. Intent to injure is a defacto part of the game. If management is so perturbed that their players get tossed like rag dolls in a run of the mill scrum, then they should lobby to end fighting, the gateway to the grey area of intent to injure plays. Otherwise, STFU. Today's statement was an embarrassment. Play within the existing rules of the game. The dilemma is, that when the Rangers do, they lose. Worse yet, they mortify themselves and, by extension, their fan base. There were very few days when I've been embarrassed to be a Ranger fan. Today was one of those days. I doubt tonight will make it any better.

That's great. The problem is Messier has never actually built a team.

Come to think of it, other than consult, Messier has less actual track record than David Quinn.

I like Messier. But all of this is based on the assumption that he actually has a plan that will work, which he's never actually revealed or had to put into play.

This is sacrilegious and I won't give back the 94 cup, but as someone who was 7 when we won it and not really a fan I sometimes wonder if it was worth the headache. Mark Messier and that 94 team has taken this franchise hostage. It's been 27 years please God let's let it go already. 90% of the players on the Rangers weren't even born yet.

I think they wanted JD to fire Gorton and he refused. Doesn't make sense to fire JD so soon.
Or, assuming messier is getting a job here, president is the only spot for him. No experience coaching or managing. JD had to make way. Drury got the GM. They will go with experience, or bring back Keenan or Torts, at coach.

@Ginger Papa ... come bring us your cheer! We need this now more than ever!
Holy Shit!

I can't believe these Men were let go before Quinn. I haven't been the most informed, but you folks have provided some insight for me this Season. That, combined with my own observations, see Gorton's rebuild as one of the templates that most NHL Franchises should follow.

If there's a GM School, it should be one of the examples in the Curriculum, IMHO.

As a Canucks fan, Gorton moves to the TOP of the list of available GM's I hope we hire once Benning is fired (please).

As for JD. I do not have the insight to understand this dismissal either other than to connect it to the Statement issued. I loved JD as a Goalie growing up (one of the coolest masks), thought he was an amazing broadcaster and am just mystified by this termination. The man will be unemployed only as long as he wants to be.

As for your question/request. Yes, I'll join your GDT tonight.

f*** Tom Wilson

thanks for guessing about Drury and being he’s the GM he has everything to do with Gorton. They’re related, that’s why you made the post.

Gorton was, in my opinion (and I'm probably in the minority on this), overrated as the GM.

He lucked into Kakko and Lafreniere, and Fox and Panarin both wanted to come to the Rangers anyway. He made some bad trades, poor draft selections, and questionable signings. I think Drury will do fine as GM.

Honestly, the worst part about this besides JD going as well, is all the brainless Caps fans who have deluded themselves into thinking Tom Wilson is causing the downfall of the Rangers.

He made some excellent trades though. Brassard for Zibanejad, Nash for Lindgren and Miller essentially.

And he went out and signed Panarin even if he wanted to be here.

He's also drafted really well. Yes, Laf and Kakko, but, uh, we have a stable of young defensemen that he's responsible for, and don't forget Igor.

As mutual as the love between Scrooge McDuck and money.
And this is the sickening part of this whole thing. It is unconvincing that a Dolan, Messier, Drury run organization would have any plan moving forward with this foundation.

I might trust Drury in a vacuum, but I don't know if I trust him to stand up to those other 2 when they demand some stupid shortsighted move be done. Gorts and Sather/JD were at least on the same page with things

Going hard after Eichel

If Messier is appointed President I will be concerned, until then I really don't have much of an issue with firing Gorton and JD. Would have preferred JD stuck around but if he truly had an ultimatum that if Gorton was going he was as well then that's what had to happen.

Intent to injure has never been a part of the game.
Checking and physical contact has always been to separate someone from the puck.
fighting is penalized, but accepted as a method of policing. Within that there are unwritten rules such as never hit a guy when he’s down, if you hit someone dirty, except to answer the call.
The game has also changed significantly since Marty mcsorley.
We watched careers destroyed by cross checks to the head, headshots.
Dops is supposed to separate clean hits that cause injury and targeting blows with an intent to harm.

If they bring in Messier in some "advisory role" I'm done with the Rangers. That's the way Dolan ran the Knicks into the ground with Isiah Thomas and his meddling/roles.

Living, loving and remembering 94..

Yes, yes indeed it was worth it.

It kind of us, and it's at least something to have an uneasy feeling about.

The one saving grace is that Drury is still here. But I don't for a moment believe this was about performance with three games left. Not with the coach still here. Not with the assistant GM still here.

Right now, I'll speculate on two fronts.

I'm going to guess that Dolan dictated the letter himself and sent it out without consulting with anyone.

I'll venture that in his fit of rage, and yes I use the word rage because Dolan is known for that behavior, he not only sent the letter but then flipped out when either the front office wasn't in favor of how he went about things, or wouldn't bend to a tantrum. Both of those are very likely.

I've seen comments here that if JD and Gorton were against the letter, they should go. Context is king there. Were they even aware of the letter? Did they agree with it in principle but thought calling for a man's job wasn't the way to go? I don't know yet.

But, I will say this from experience, Jim Dolan is an incredibly volatile person to work for. Sather had the cache to tell him to go f*** himself. And for many years, better or worse, that kept the devil on the other side of the door.

It was thought that JD had that same cache. We now know he either didn't, or he was willing to die on that hill and it is what it is.

But, I would be shocked, and I do mean shocked, if Drury has that kind of cache. And that aspect, coupled with the lack of a buffer, should be considered a concerning development.

Whatever stability the NYR organization showed to the rest of the league for the past decade + is gone. We immediately look like a far less attractive team for free agents, executives, coaches. Our scouting staff will look completely different within a few months leading up to the draft. This will likely hollow out the whole damn organization. It's going to be an absolute brain drain unless somehow Chris Drury can stabilize stuff. He pretty quickly needs to secure his guys. It all rests on Chris Drury now. The guy who did a very mediocre job with that Team USA team a few years ago. I mean, it's really hard not to feel like we've entered a very dark shakey era suddenly. What an upsetting turn of events.
