Well that helps significantly with the Rangers "cap crunch". Getting a veteran Top-6 winger working for minimum wage just to live in New York City and presumably spend all of his Winnipeg money.

Every team should feel stupid for not outbidding that contract. This is stupid good for NYR.

Wasn't even paying attention to the salary earlier but that's an absolute steal for NYR

He'll be good but when you get pancaked by your cross river rival because of speed + odd man rushes I don't think the direction you want to go is getting older + slower. This applies more to Bonino but Wheeler is also atrocious defensively.

I saw this coming a long time ago.

The Rangers will be an amazing team next season.

Issue is always going to be their division, they might be the unluckiest team the past decade+ when it comes to running into teams better than them besides maybe SJS. Went from the Caps/Pens great teams to now the Devils + Carolina with Philly and CBJ on the come up in the near distant future with how the latter have drafted + built.

My concern is that something was clearly wrong with the culture in Winnipeg and as Captain, he was clearly deep into it. If it was something he couldnt fix, I guess, ok. Shit happens. But taking him out of that element and adding him to a new room where he is the new guy, especially where he can come in as a guy who doesnt need stats or ice time to validate himself for a new deal is just all profit for the Rangers. Hopefully hes not slow as molasses at this point.

These no-state-income-tax teams are really cleaning up with ridiculous free agent bargain signings. This is so unfair!

Oh, wait…

Bargain no risk signing for the Rangers
Wheels makes more money from the Jets for not playing for them this season than he does from the Rangers

I bet he really wanted to go there. I'm sure there were many higher offers. He's still a decent player. Only downside is he was quite gassed out there last year and it won't be getting better with age.
Rangers are one of the slowest teams in the league.
How would you notice?

I think it’s pretty obvious he either got higher offers or would have if he’d waited it out for an hour or two. He signed where he wanted to, which is a luxury he had because he’s getting $2.75m from the Jets. $800k is all the Rangers could really afford, so it’s what he had to take to go where he wanted.
