I think because of the small sample size, they might not have been so crazy about doing it in the offseason. Only another 9 games, but he still looks like...Adam Fox. So they gave him a chance to fall off, he didn't fall off, and the market for the top defensemen is wacky, along with whatever anyone thinks of the cap ceiling going up again.

Trouba and Kreider both look excellent so far this season, and those are the guys who will probably be shuffled out (to good teams, they have NMCs) if Laf/Kakko turn it up. Right now the young players haven't earned those big tickets, though Kakko could make sense as an offer sheet guy if offer sheets are done for non-spite reasons
