I don't see how he'd be hurt getting top pair minutes at the AHL level.

It may be better than the alternative which may be what we saw last season, 2nd pair minutes being paired with Staal.

Pionk is 23. Same age as Buchnevich. This is different from putting one of the 2017 firsts back in the AHL.

I think he’s at an age where he doesn’t benefit any from such inferior competition.

I guess we’ll see what happens. Maybe this move is about Smith or Claesson will be in the AHL.

Outside of the fact that he has played a lot of games exactly what makes McQuaid serviceable?

His offensive numbers are awful
His shot impacts are bad
His goal impacts are bad
His penalty differential is terrible

He blocks an above average amount of shots and hits a lot that's about it.

Nothing. He's horrible. And he doesn't even get the "tough minutes", so that explanation is out the window.

Interesting trade for a rebuilding team, a d-man age 31. This confirms it's more a retool.

It's the exact same logic people would use if Staal/Girardi never played for the Rangers and we traded for them now. Serviceable, veteran, playoff experience etc. We had that in those two guys and few want them because they aren't good.

Do you think those three are competing for two spots?

They did not make this trade to waive or continually scratch McQuaid.

He is likely the default 3rd pair RD.

Given Shattenkirk is a RD, that leave one spot for either ADA or Poink.

The options kind of become, send Poink to the AHL as he does not need to clear waivers, or waive ADA (or trade him but for what?)

Why not both? Let ADA take that spot, let Pionk Play in the AHL since he is waiver exempt. Make a decision at the Trade Deadline, or even next season after these guys have had a full season of evaluation in a brand new, non specialized system

He's a body that can PK and he's legitimately a rough hombre.

He isn't good but we don't need him to be good.

Most Rangers fans wanted them gone because of their horrific contracts. I would have had little problem with Girardi at half of his cap hit and wouldn't have a problem with Staal at half his cap hit. They were great defensemen from the 2007-2012 window when the game was a little more bump and grind and less focused on speed. From the moment they signed their extensions, the game started to pass them by. Their contracts were prohibitive in improving the team after the 2014 and 2015 seasons when the window could have remained open a bit longer.

Mcquaid was acquired to defend the kids and penalty kill. I'm not getting bent out of shape from giving up a lottery ticket and a journeyman defenseman, especially when the Rangers will likely get that pick back if they deal him at the deadline.

His contract is 2.75M. There are only 9 teams currently that even have less cap space than that. If they were to retain half only 4 teams have less cap space. If they just signed him and kept him in the AHL until the deadline and called him up then only like 5 teams would have less cap space. The salary cap really isn't an issue for teams trading for him outside of a few. In fact subtract one to everyone I listed because one is Zetterberg with the fake contract in there.

Are you counting when cap space banks up at the deadline? That's when McQuaid at 50% will be worth a 3rd

I guess that's where we differ. I'd prefer not to have them at all, or at a close to league minimum contract at most with a coach who would be willing to sit them or a FO that would send them down or put them on waivers. Replacement level players at even half of what Girardi and Staal make would still be negative value.

This. All of this. 100%. Let Pionk shred the A and give ADA the spot to lose and if he does, so be it and move on, bring Pionk up & you package ADA with whomever we decide to move. Gorton has put us in so many win-win scenarios and I love it.

I hate this trade. Adam is a playoff warrior and a true Bruin.

This is a loss for the B's
Adam's fellow team mates will miss him along with the fans of Boston. He plays with so much heart.

I hope he works put well for you.

These threads are so predictable nowadays

Not really much of a reaction from me. McQuaid isn’t very good, but you could do a lot worse for a “tough guy”.

Reminds me of the Steve Rucchin trade. Late-summer move. Transitioning team. 4th round pick and a likely AHL player. Player on his last legs at a position that lacks experience on the roster.

I think it's a matter of context.

Are we talking about an insurance policy who we're expecting to be a 6th or 7th defenseman on a rebuilding team, with the best case scenario being that he gets phased out by a younger talent, and subsequently traded?

Or are we talking about a a pair of guys signed to large, multi-year contracts, who are being paraded out in top 4 roles, on a team that sees itself as a legit contender?

I can see the net win if
  1. McQuaid is flipped at the TDL for at least a 3rd thus upgrading our pick
  2. This means Quinn doesn't have to dress McLeod.
otherwise, not a fan of trading our 4th here. I hope he knows how to skate.
