I think ADA's chances with the Rangers are close to zero (I think he blew his chances last season), I expect him to get traded, probably thrown in with Hayes.

Generally it's true that I'd you're hitting a lot, you are chasing, but that's the rule, and there are exceptions to that. Radko Gudas hits a TON but the guy is an exceptional defensive defenseman.

It's the guys that go out of position to hit (glass), the guys that try to use hitting as a foundation to their game (4th line goon like McCleod), or the guys that have to use snow angels (girardi) to block shots and passes... Those are the rules, but there are exceptions to those rules. You can't look at one stat and then use that as a reference point for a player being good or bad.

I'm not saying McQuaid is going to be fire for us, but let's not jump to conclusions. We gave up a 4th rounder for a UFA to be who has lots of value at the trade deadline. He's not taking minutes from anyone, and like others have stated, if ADA and Pionk can't earn minutes over McQuaid then they suck ass and they shouldn't be playing anyways.
I think that there is a misscommunication. I was making the point that making such generalizations by utilizing one metric is wrong.

The posts that "ADA and Pionk suck anyway if they can't beat out McQuaid" are assuming the NHL is a meritocracy.

It's the furthest thing from a meritocracy.
Under AV it wasn't a meritocracy. But it pretty much was under Torts.

And come one now, McQ is miles ahead of Smith. Also need to remember that the former was hurt for much of the year while the latter was out of shape and lazy.

The mentality that this rebuild should be predicated on punching people.
What points to that of all things?
Whether you want to admit it or not, the front office has publicly made it a focal point. This move, albeit small, confirms that.
Or maybe their point is that you need players who actually are not afraid of using their bodies to separate players from the puck instead of waving sticks. Or maybe their point is that a successful team needs players that bring the fight to the other team. Or maybe their point was that a mentality of constantly turning the other cheek is wrong. Or maybe their point was that you cannot build a team that is solely predicated on what metrics tell you? Or that a successful team is more than simply having players that like to dangle and move East to West?

Beyond which, how is it a meritocracy if Pionk or DeAngelo get the call even when they don't outperform McQuaid?

Honestly, it shouldn't be a meritocracy this season as we're looking beyond this year. Pionk and DeAngelo have the potential to be a part of this team's long-term future and should be given leeway to establish themselves as NHL defencemen. Unless they're unacceptably bad they should be playing every night.

We have the luxury to do it this season, we should use it.

That's not a good way to develop players. They have to earn their time.

The most I'd be willing to agree with that is that a tie should go to the youngster.

OK, I agree with Pionk since he can play in the AHL. But with DeAngelo the options are playing, pressbox or trade/waivers - I choose the first option. Especially with a defenceman since the perception of their play is affected a lot more by factors out of their control than forwards.

Hmm, I think we need to separate ADA from Pionk. I would disagree re. Pionk as he'd probably benefit more from being a 20+ min 1st pair D in Hartford than 12 min 3rd pair / 7th D with the Rangers.

ADA MUST win a position with the Rangers. I don't even want to discuss alternatives.

I don't think DeAngelo would have any problem clearing waivers if he doesn't make the team out of camp.

It'll be fun to see how long it takes for Quinn to become a moron.
Depends...I tend to hate coaching decisions I can't rationalize whatsoever. If I understand, but disagree, that's cool. But stuff like playing tanner glass with zucc....I'll never understand..and yeah..he's then a moron.

I think you're totally wrong. Right handed play making defenseman with unreql junior numbers and very very strong ahl numbers? Someone will take a flier.

The first time we hear about potential lines in practice before the first preseason game?

Guarantee if there's no Buch-Zib-Kreider line a whole lot of people are going to complain

Nah. I'm fine with that line being broken up. What I'm not fine with is buch playing with McLeod and fasth as a center in the 4th line or whatever ridiculous combo av would try.

Buch on a line with say namestnikov and chytil? Sign me up. Buch on a line with spooner and Hayes? Sure let's try it. Buch with McLeod and vesey? Kill me now.

I'd like to see Lias at RW on the Zib line to see how that goes. Those two played pretty well together in the EHT and WC this year. I hope Quinn will at least give it a try..

Wanna put money on this?

Would be the easiest buck I've ever made.

Honestly, I don’t think he’s going to get sent down. He might not be on the opening night roster, but if he’s not I fully expect that he’ll be in a rotation with the other guys.

But I also never bet on things like this, because I always allow for the possibility that I’m wrong.

How dare you not take an extreme stance on this website!!

I’m expecting that to be the case for the majority of the season as long as they make sure Pionk and ADA get the necessary ice time. Sitting up in the box with Greg Brown to dissect the defense wouldn’t be the worst thing, and they’d still have the benefit of practicing with the teams regularly.

I don't know if ADA would clear waivers. But I do know that, if claimed, him suddenly turning it around with his fourth NHL franchise would be more of the exception than the rule.

History tells us that most guys who haven't cracked a lineup as a regular player, with three organizations, before they're 23, usually don't turn around and become core players. I'm sure it happens from time to time, but I'd say ADA's odds take a serious hit if he isn't able to secure a spot in the starting lineup to begin the season and then hold onto it.

I always expected coaches to play certain players against certain teams, rotate guys in and out based on something logical, I can not remember it ever playing out like that.
