I think the Leafs don't want to loose Nylander anymore than Nylander wants to leave Toronto. I doubt any team gives him $10M+ as a UFA. $9M maybe. I think his fair value is in the $8M - $9M range along with the likes of Larkin, Barzal, Dubois who has signed recent contracts.

I believe the plan will be lets just play out the last year of the contract and see how much the cap grows.
That would be the best direction for the Leafs. Nylander at 9 mil seems just about right. I don't see the Leafs trading Nylander. Tavares will soon be gone.

Not at all, it's just that cap space clearing up 2-3 years from now doesn't impact the cap space you actually have available now or in 1 year.
They have a whole yr to figure that out. Leafs should be able to make it work for one season .

How is that any different to what the current cup winners Vegas has done? Or 2/3 of the entire league does each year? Creating extra cap for 4th liners, 6/7 dmen types by trading a top six forward is not a winning strategy by any stretch.
Why doesn't every team just go with 20 man rosters then?

Part of me wonders
Rivalry aside - if the Bruins were hungry to keep the window open AND if they thought Nylander could be a C (he’s dabbled at it, but isn’t getting in ahead of AM or JT)

Debrusk + Carlo
For
Nylander + Liljgren

Carlo has a tidy contract and Debrusk is a UFA to be.
No thanks. Nylander is better than both combined and throwing in lily lmao. Not to mention bruins. You're gonna have to pony up a lot more to get us to move Nylander to Boston because nylander is the kind of player that will torch us every time we play him.

Marchand + Carlo

Nylander + Timmins + 2nd

Leafs fans will turn on Liljegren by December. He will be the #1 trade chip in all Leafs fan fantasy trades on this board. Book it! He’s 24 and the fantasy of his unlimited potential is over.

The last time I checked (it was mid season last year iirc), there was only one team that had a 20 player roster (iirc). There's probably a few more on day 1 (first day of season).

Nylander for Pesce still makes sense although I'm not sure Pesce would accept a trade to Toronto.

The Canes could add something like Drury, who should carve out a nice career as a bottom 6 c with good leadership skills and a low cap hit, to the deal.

If Toronto doesn't trade him, starting in 2024/25, they have:

Matthews - $13.5 million
Tavares - $11 million
Marner - $10.9 million and due a raise
Nylander - $10 million

Bertuzzi and Domi will also be due raises and be UFAs. They also need to fill our almost their entire d-core and sign at least 1 goalie.

Good luck building a team around that. Nylander also seems to want to go to a team where he is more of a main attraction.
Not sure why you would assume a UFA we just signed would automatically need a raise?

We'll manage until Tavares expires.

If Pesce is the main piece coming back, I wouldn't accept any trade as Toronto.

Why doesn't every team just go with 20 man rosters then?

Teams have players they want to keep on the roster for development reasons or waiver reasons...

Some teams need to go with only 20, but it isn't ideal.

Having said that, not sure Toronto is missing the playoffs if they need to play the occasional game with 19 skaters.

Not sure it is a big deal.

When players sign a short-term show me deal and then perform. They typically expect fair compensation, relative to the market. Players like Bertuzzi and Domi aren't going to re-up on cheap 1 year deals over and over.
