Brad Treliving in negotiations.

sounds great, until they dont produce in the play off and there is no mid tier to pick up the slack.

Their chances with Nylander are better than their chances without.

You think you're going to find 2 $6M players who bring what Nylander brings?

Fact is, cost effective "mid tier" players are hard to find - either they end up being replacement level and overpaid, or if they're actually good, we end up priced out anyways.

I have no doubt that there is no way the Maple Leafs could've done more with that $11.5M than they just did. We would've all liked Nylander to sign for less, but there is no way that $11.5M could be better spent.

I think you'd better strap in for at least 4 more years of this core.

Yeah, wishful thinking on my part that there would be some level of accountability but no doubt you are right. We’ll trade David Kampf this summer instead to really shake things up and send a stern message to the core.

Yeah the NHL does not have a level playing field. If you have a cap, make it so everything is equal.
Too much Revenue sharing is the root of all evil. Teams can ice poor quality players, play in 5000 seat arenas, and try to out tank each other for the next one. If they had only their fan base to generate income from they wouldn’t do crap like that. I know it’s only regular season but fans don’t want to lose most of the games.

Hungry players play just as well the 4 or 5 million dollar guy is just throwing money away

I'm not sure why you quoted my post.
Is it not allowed?

The reality is that we cannot accurately judge this deal until we see how other comparable players are paid this summer and beyond. This may very well be the first of many contracts like this, in which case it's better to get out ahead of it.
Pastrnak just signed for $11.25, and is a superior player…so there’s that

Why bother, might as well bend over and cough because we know how everything ends for this organization.

Huberdeau and Kadri prepped Tre for us.
If Willy didn't want to sign in the summer what was he supposed to .
Trade him walk either way people would have been pissed
Wait until mathews resigns in 4 ys when the cap is 100 million $
This will look like a great deal.

Yeah, and Nylander is probably $1M overpaid with this, just like Marner was in his last contract.

Do you think you'll do better enough with that $1M to have let Nylander walk?

Had the GMs bet on Nylander earlier and signed him to a $10.5M contract in the offseason and then he had a disastrous year, people would be calling for heads to roll.

It's always easy to be a GM with the benefit of hindsight.

Ok, done, fini.
Now, let's just win a cup.
(and please Mitchy baby, don't start with what you may want)

When you put it into context, imagine complaining you could have "more depth" which is really 2 Bertuzzi's or 1 Nylander. Pretty damn easy choice.

People don't know the big picture plans either.

Mathews will be 31 at the start of his next deal, it won’t be long 8 year deal. There has to be an upside for a player who keeps betting on himself.

Ok that is ok but now need some hidden gems to fill out the defense and goalie and defensive forward positions

Great to have 88 for 8 more years but that's an insane contract (more money and more NMC protection than Pastrnak)

How much did we get Nylander down from his ask? $5?

Crazy how anyone thought he was getting less than 11 when that’s what Tavares got 6 years ago. Nylander is simply just better than that and he’s paid accordingly. I mean sure it would’ve been nice if he took less but why on earth would he when you really think about it.

Overpaying our stars forces us to fill out our roster at the Goodwill (we picked Sammy who Washington tossed to the curb, Murray who paid us to take him) and hope they can turn into something. It has not and it will not work if you want to win the SC. If you are happy being entertained by highly skilled, super elite, regular season warriors, then it is a good day to be a Leaf$ fan.

It's possible for two things to be true at the same time.

• On the one hand, we don't know, realistically, whether there was a reasonable trade option out there that would have actually improved the roster or addressed our shortcomings in the playoffs (which, oddly enough, has been scoring). Can't let him walk for nothing, either. There might not have been a scenario where trading him would make us any better.
• On the other hand, it's an investment in the same group of players that haven't been able to get the job done for years, and further reinforces the perception that this is a top-heavy team that will continue to wilt against deeper rosters in the postseason.
I think it's fair to be both pleased the signing got done, and frustrated that it looks like another big monetary injection into a core that has disappointed in the past.
