Leafs can't ice a Cup competitive team with 3 players in the TOP 12 highest AAV so lets try making that 4.

There are 32 NHL teams and next year Leafs will have 1/4 or 4 of 12 of the highest AAV in a Salary Cap World.

The other 8 other Top 12 players are spread out among 31 other teams.
Yeah but the Leafs just happen to have the most elite players in the NHL

I think signing bonuses are supposed to give us and other teams than can give them an advantage. Get your money upfront to invest it right now to make more over the course of the contract.

In the grand scheme of things, doesn’t really matter how you pay the player, spread out or all in one, but it feels like paying more upfront should lead to a tad bit better contract for the team
The bonus 'upfront' isn't at the start of the contract the way it used to be - it's just a portion of the season's salary paid at the beginning of the season.

Why not, the NBA is a better product in every way. I’m all for more player movement to be honest. That’s the biggest appeal about the NBA is that star players get traded for other star players often
I know this thread isn’t about this, but genuinely, if I wasn’t born Canadian and constantly surrounded by hockey stuff, there’s no way I’d be a hockey fan. I find the NBA, NFL and hell a lot of esports to be waaay more enjoyable to watch than the shitty hockey product we have now.

But I’m in too deep

It is what he is. Great player. Team will be competitive but the cap structure is insane. Better than losing him but signings are being mismanaged, still.

No point in getting riled up and nervous about it. Maybe it'll go to his legs and he'll be even better.

We'll worry about it and regret this off-season. No reason doing it now.

The bonuses are still paid before he plays a game so most of his salary is in the bank earning money pre season. It doesn't matter to the cap but it matters when comparing him to any player not on the same structure. $69M is worth millions more than Pastrnaks $26M. He somehow got more money than a guy who has been better than him their whole career and then he got the bonus in addition plus better trade protection.

It matters because the bonus is something most other clubs can't give and its a financial benefit that should be reflected somewhere. At $11.5 with full no move and all that bonus money, who are his comps? Its like when you negotiate with the Leafs you cut your best deal and then they throw in the bonus as a thank you for signing.
It's not that much of a difference.

Next year, Pastrnak will earn 13M - 4.5 paid on July 1 and 8.5 spread out over the season.

Next year Nylander will earn 13.5M - 10 paid on July 1 and 3.5 spread out over the season.

I thought in the summer they did throw around a $11.5 million number but it sounded like crazy talk. The Nylander put up.
They threw around a lot of 10, just over 10. The Leafs threw around a lot of it's gotta be in the 8s.

Reports, of course. Though from the same people that reported this last week and were obviously correct. People that, although we typically don't like, are most often correct.

The playoffs are far too random to use the past as a useful predictor of the future. There is obviously no guarantee of winning, but it seems to me that the best strategy will always be accumulating as much talent as possible, because ultimately talent tends to prevail. The Leafs have a 5 year window, including this season, where they should have a realistic chance to win the Cup. As a fan, what more can you ask for?
You said there is a good chance they win a cup in the next few years or something to that affect. Very different than this follow up

I know it might seem like nothing but the video today of practise makes it seem like no one is happy about the Willy contract. Rielly gets up right away kind of looking pissed.
When Rielly got signed all the players were cheering him on.
Could be nothing, could be something.

I really don’t think anyone should try to read into potential teammate reactions. There’s no way to know.

The bonus isn't like in the old days where you got it all up front.

It is part of the salary each year, but it just comes at the beginning of the season.

For example, for the 24-25 season, his total salary is 13.5, with 10 as the bonus. It means he gets 10 on whatever day (maybe Sept 1), and the remaining 3.5 in weekly or monthly or semi-monthly paychecks (from Sept 1 to May 30?) I'm guessing the dates.

He's not getting 69 million today.
Ya I understand, just that the team providing a ton of signing bonuses provides economic benefit (I.e. increase time value of money as you get your salary up front practically in full at the start of each year) and the tax implication differences too

We traded being competitive for marketable names. I honestly have zero expectations to win with this core.

It's not better than losing him. Anything would have been better than this.

What!? You mean this f***ing team's board of directors are only interested in selling merch and NOT winning? Say it ain't so!

In a good year I make over 8% on my investments and his investment guy is better than mine. So thats $66k a month on $10M up front. Payable every July 1 so thats $250g before the season starts and more earned each month until the amount paid catches up to the salary normal rate. For the year $400K+?

Its that kind of a number until a couple of lean years in 29-30 when its more like $200k. Something around $2.5M for the life of the deal maybe. Probably $1.5M more than Pasta will see but I don't have an amortization calculator to give a real number. And the exact number doesn't matter, I am just confused that it is there but carries no weight.

If you want to get paid come to Toronto. I’m good with that.

Next year 4 players will be eating up 53% of the cap. What an utter disaster.
Unless they win something. There will likely be some corners cut on D and in goal for 1 season. Better extend Jones before he shows any more:) I can see picks for retention if they want to really compete. This is the window.
