I would have liked 10 or 10.5, but given the 8 year term this contract will look much better when contracts start hitting 15M in 3-5 years. Why do you think Matthews only signed for 4 years? It wasn't to give us "cap space" now as reported, it was to take advantage of the upcoming cap increases.

Also, anyone trying to compare Nylander to Tavares today is a twit or troll. Johnny has been great for us, but his highest ever point tally was 88 in his first year with Marner on his wing. Willy is likely going to post a 100+ season and is playing better this year than Tavares has at any point in his career.

The Leafs would be better letting a 35 year old Tavares walk, and using that money elsewhere, instead of given him anything over 4M in 2026. If he's ok with 2-3M to stay in TO then I'm ok with that, otherwise, thanks for the memories.

Over the last 3+ seasons, Willy is 15th, JT is 29th.
Over the last 2+ seasons, Willy is 14th and JT is 32nd.
Over the last 1+ seasons, Willy is 12th and JT is 32nd.

But yes, pretend that what happened 5 or 6 years ago is more relevant than what's happening now.

Watching the games, it's obvious that Willy is carrying JT more and more.

People saying that JT will get more than 4 or 5 are crazy.

I think it’s not outside the realm of possibility he gets up to $6M but that is the tops I see. And I think based on team need, if he’s staying, it’ll need to be closer to $5M.

yeah JT gets his but he's totally dependent on his linemates to drive the play and create offensive opportunities for him

he's now basically reduced to just being a net front presence that you have to shelter defensively , i really don't want him back for even 4/5m since it would be to much trouble trying to find ways for him to be useful
ye i dont want JT back either, which was another crazy fight i had with some people here recently lol.
game has evolved away from that type of player. and hes just not a very good 5v5 anymore.

I’d consider bring him back as 3C but only if the salary was reflective of that role. I think he could still do that role very effectively

How he got more than Pasta is a decision

No wonder it was a smooth process. Trev probably didn’t want to lose him to FA, so he didn’t negotiate very hard.

Tre knows we gain a lot when Tavares is gone.

Sign a true solid D man.
Add Another Benoit type at the back,
Another strong center and hopefully we lose 130 pound Marner who can’t compete in the playoffs.

Nylander gets more solid every year. No wasted energy and movements .
While Marner still trips over his feet and makes a blind no look 360 backhand pass in a 1 goal game.

i just dont see him looking at the other contracts, then looking at stats and saying "sure i will take 4 million" just not realistic to me.
people are just using it as a way to justify yet another overpay for one of our core.

at the end of the day this contract is just a microcosm of the bigger overall issue, it has less to do with what willy is worth in a vacuum and more to do what is the best way of getting a cup back here, which is what all fans want.

the leafs have been saying they can win with this structure for years, and we have 1 terrible 2nd round series to show for all those promises. at a certain point you gotta stop doubling down on mistakes and try something different lol.

The guy's going to be a career Leaf. Love to see it.

Too much fixating over a few hundred thousand dollars of aav (if he signed for 600k less there would be way less complaining). Just don't overpay any 4th liners and it gets negated.
f***ing exactly so. The money is wasted on guys like Klingberg, Domi, Kampf etc.
Dudes and duds is the way to go.

Full NMC every year with 69 million in signing bonuses or some shit
The bonus isn't like in the old days where you got it all up front.

It is part of the salary each year, but it just comes at the beginning of the season.

For example, for the 24-25 season, his total salary is 13.5, with 10 as the bonus. It means he gets 10 on whatever day (maybe Sept 1), and the remaining 3.5 in weekly or monthly or semi-monthly paychecks (from Sept 1 to May 30?) I'm guessing the dates.

He's not getting 69 million today.

Love the player, the price is a kings ransom

Good on William for maximizing his pay day. Shame on MLSE for once again screwing up large with the cap structure.

Marner 13m?

3 Hockey players and spare parts model going forward.

Some will but somehow there are still a lot of fans who think they're on the right track overpaying players who have proven they can't get it done in the playoffs. As long as management keeps the golden girls in the fold they're fine.
as long as they can deliver a cup. it’s really cup or complete disappointment at this point. hoping they can bring it home. this year hasn’t convinced me, too many strong teams.

Except these dudes have not shown they can win, that’s the real problem. I love Nylander, probably $1mil/year too much, while it doesn’t sound like much, so that for your top 4 or 5 players and they could be a a difference maker

I know it might seem like nothing but the video today of practise makes it seem like no one is happy about the Willy contract. Rielly gets up right away kind of looking pissed.
When Rielly got signed all the players were cheering him on.
Could be nothing, could be something.

Well, at least we know these guys are fierce battlers, won't give an inch, and absolutely will not accept defeat when it matters most.

At the negotiating table.

Another smashing failure for this clown car org.

Uh, which ones? In the East maybe Florida and the Rangers, and in the West Vegas and Colorado? Doesn't seem like a big list to me.

30+ players will likely not be getting 13+mm

When they put up close to or more than 100 points they will
I'm in favour of seeing 1 this year. I you think its a given tht he will get 14 to 5 years from now then you might want to go easy on the crack pipe. What does the league have today that is trending that way? 3 players at most? Of those, who makes it? Maybe Panarin.

The old boss is likely the one that's been here this whole time. It's Shanny who's a hockey guy who isn't interested in PR, and the other presidential stuff. I do believe it was Nonis/Shanny who drafted Nylander long ago. Why would Shanny want to see him not re-signed in TOR?

In a vacuum most GMs would like Nylander on their team too.
Wasn’t it Burke that drafted him?

Maybe BB got rielly but I always thought he also got nylander, not sure

92 million cap
Matthews - 13.5
Marner - 11.5
Nylander 11.5
Tavares - 6.75
= 43.25 million or 47 % of the cap.
Even better just looking at the top three (who made most of it anyway). 33.5 of an 81.5 cap is 41.1%.

Matty at 13.5, Mitch at 12 and Willy at 11.5 means 37 of a 92 cap is 40.2%. Smaller cap % on better players.

And if JT gets less than Willy's old 6.9, which he should, we're even better.

(Edited to use Dekes' numbers.)

I think signing bonuses are supposed to give us and other teams than can give them an advantage. Get your money upfront to invest it right now to make more over the course of the contract.

In the grand scheme of things, doesn’t really matter how you pay the player, spread out or all in one, but it feels like paying more upfront should lead to a tad bit better contract for the team

The advantage of the signing bonus is that the contract is tradeable in the later years because the real money is low
