1. Tax isn't as straightforward as 'apply x provincial/state and federal rate'; for rich athletes who travel a lot there are various loopholes and ways to minimize taxes payable

2. Playing in Canada gives the advantage of exchange rate since contracts are paid in USD

3. While Toronto has higher cost of living, TB has nowhere near the same endorsement opportunities. Stars get treated like royalty here and will milk all the sponsorships and endorsements possible

Sorry to shoot down your argument but:
1) If he played for a Florida team or Dallas or Las Vegas his taxes would be much lower. (no state taxes)
2) Things cost more in Canada ( ie. Housing) which offsets being paid in USD
3) Endorsement money is going to Matthews, Tavares possibly Marner and that's it!!!

Because a second pair is almost as important as a first pair. The leafs have zero players ready to handle those minutes. Dermott is borderline but only with the help of a solid 2nd pair partner which we don't have.

Also because he has enough trouble handling his strong side as it is.

ive said it before, but I really am interested next offseason if marner is in this situation. Marner's agent is similar to nylanders in that he is known to keep clients out longer before signing. A couple of posters are so personally offended by nylander right now it seems like they wont even want him to succeed after he signs
No way, marner is my favorite player and so much better than nylander, more potential and doesn't run away from contact so he deserves what he gets next season. I doubt he'll hold out, I doubt matthews holds out either, nylander everyone expected to be an asshole like his father either that or his father is pulling the strings behind the scenes. This is why he dropped in the draft to 8th because everyone knew about his father and thought nylander would have character issues.

Wrong on all accounts but especially wrong on the endorsement deals. In fact Nylander already has a nice endorsement he just announced two days ago from Reebok Canada. An endorsement he wouldn't have received if he was in Florida Dallas or Vegas.

That is some pure, unsubstantiated bullshit.

I have a feeling you just gained a ton of Ignores.

I think that was his point. It's not that simple. It's way out of my expertise, but from what I've gathered taxes in the state where they play matter less than people think given how much time players spend working on the road. Something like that.

Willy already got some, so this is obviously false.

Were we not talking chump change; we are talking REAL dollars. Tell me what he endorsed that was worth more than free pizzas for a year!

Well based on all I have read that endorsement deal is worth maybe $100,000 per year. That is nothing compared to higher cost of living and increased taxes in Canada. Also, Steve Stamkos 's endorsements are in the $1.5 million /yr which shoots down your Florida theory.

How about you read his scouting reports dated before the draft. Oh right you signed up in 2017, doubt you even where a leaf fan when they were trash

That definitely explains my Mogilny and Kaberle jerseys...

Nah, it’s good for ignoring people who are trolling or constantly instigating, especially f they run away when faced with facts or they turn to insults.

Congratulations, I honestly didn't think this thread could get worse but you proved me wrong

Marner is your favorite player so he deserves whatever he gets? You realize there's a salary cap and he's an RFA without arb rights like Nylander?
We should play hard ball and screw him to just like Nylander, that's how this works

Sitting out and trying to get a better deal isn't a character issue, it's business and he's trying to use the leverage he's got to get a better deal just like we are

The ignore list is a refuge of the weak minded who only want to see opinions like their own. Enjoy your echo chamber.

I've never ignored anybody on here and dont agree with it but that comment mind-numbing to a spectacular degree

yeah, because the date of signing in on hf boards determines how long you've been a fan.

shanahan has known nylander for 10+ years. he wanted the leafs to draft him. don't you think the leafs know better whether or not william has 'character issues'? i bet they do.

ok well, we will see next year when marners agent (an agent known for holdouts) hasnt had marner sign a contract if that happens i look forward to your mental gymnastics as to why nylander is a POS and marner is still a god

Only one stating Willy would be difficult to sign was me. Cracks me up to see a post saying most here expected this. No one expected this. Which is why it's happening.

This has been talked about extensively a while back. With the proper tax structure, Canadian taxes could be reduced to as low as 25% for these guys. That means that if you include the high property taxes in these other jurisdiction, they may have lower taxes in Canada
