Also, Elias Pettersson teams have been irrelevant since 2018-19 when he broke into the league. As their franchise center, they never made the playoffs in a normal non-Covid format, have always been talented but completely dysfunctional and there's never been a direct relationship between Pettersson's production and team success until this year...

Yeah, I'd take Pettersson over Nylander from an academic POV, the argumentation for position, age, past performance are rational. But also don't act like Pettersson is on par with Nathan Mackinnon and the Canucks got the steal of a lifetime while Toronto got fleeced.

Like Nylander, they paid full retail for a luxury item.

Why does he have to be on par with MacKinnon for this to be a steal? MacKinnon signed for a million more under a lower cap...

Well if he is playing at his level for 2/3 of the new contract esp in the playoffs. He is worth it. Just like AM with his new contract.

I would rather pay Willie or AM or MM 500k-1mil more than paying Kampf 500k-1mil more.
Having said that, if these guys produce in the playoffs and win a Cup, their contract is worth it. In the same token, if they continue to get bounce in the 1st round or only make it to the 2nd round. We should not be piss bc the top guys didn't take 500k-1mil less but rather, we should be piss about having them on the team despite their talents bc it shows they just can't do it collectively.
Now, if they continue to come up short, like SC finals or ECF Finals, then we can really say if only those top guys each take 500k less b/c that 1.5mil can help the team get a better 10th or 11th forward and that might just be the difference between winning the Cup or just making the Finals.

I'll say it again - considering what an all-time great scoring season Matthews is having and the fact that he's playing together with super duper playmaker Marner, the fact that despite played with linemates who are nowhere near the level of those two and are basically all having off years to boot, Willie's still somehow put up more points than M&M this season is mind boggling.

I thought for sure we should have waited until the off-season to sign him as surely he'd cool off at some point, so far it looks like I was wrong. At this point in time, the deal looks absolutely fine. He also doesn't fade away in the playoffs which can't be said about M&M and that's very important!
