Ya I think JGP is a really solid player no doubt. I also think Palms is a good player. I know they provide value to the NYI, and really fit the mold of player that the NYI need to run the system that they do. That said, as a Leaf fan, this board has unanimously slaughtered the Oilers for the signing of Zach Hyman at 5.5AAV, albeit largely because of the 7 years but also the AAV to a lesser extent. To me, Zach is a more effective player than both of those players, albeit not by a wide margin. 500k difference in salary seems appropriate when comparing Hyman to JGP and Palms. To me at least. Of course there is admittingly a bias there.

As much as I love Zach, I think 5.5AAV is a touch steep, and have him around 4.5-5AAV over that term. Lots on here would even suggest lower. I guess I am just confused how the majority of people on here look at the Hyman deal as a gross overpayment, and then say the JGP and Palmeri deals are steals. To me, from an AAV standpoint they align as equal overpayments. I recognize the term to Hymans deal was the major issue, and it is likely a deal that they will have a hard time with at some point. But when we are looking at pt production, which is ultimately how you get paid in this league, I can't see the JGP and Palmeri deals as good deals. Despite them being good players. You can find that level of production and effectiveness for far less AAV IMO.
Not sure who is calling it a steal. Most on our own boards thought it'd be around 4-4.5 even one poster thinking he'd get 3.5m (lol). Lou has shown a propensity to overpay to get his man, and perhaps that extra 500k was in there for him to keep his mouth shut the whole offseason until it was announced? Who knows?

Sounds like some bullshit you’d hear on coach’s corner.

Funny how the guy who doesn’t impact the game much actually produced against Tampa the most physically engaged team NYI played and Palms put up his production against the weak skill teams, eh?

Sounds like some bullshit you'd read on a message board from a fan who thinks he knows better than experts on coach's corner.

Seems like a lot of $ for a guy coming off a 10 goal season.
It was a short season last year. And he Palms did tie for the lead in goals for the Isles in the playoffs. He scored 25 in 65 games the year before, 27 in 74 the year before that. When he played a full year of 82 games he scored 30.

Given he was a UFA, and the deal was only for 4 years. The AVV It not high at all. At worst it is fair. Great that the Isles did not go over 4 years, and also good for Palmieri to put 20M in the bank while wanting to stay with the Isles. The AVV could have been less say approximatey 4.5 to 4.75 but you would have to add term to the deal. To me, 5 x 4 years is the perfect deal for an upgrade to Eberle.

0 goals this year and something like 2 in 27 in the regular season since becoming an islander. Ouch

He’s been fine. Solid all-around game with some crucial setups. Snake-bit finish but getting plenty of chances in front of the net. Has the feel that he will break-out soon.

Funny, but Eberle was the exact same way. Would go without scoring, then pot like five in three games. Difference is that Palmieri helped Barzal keep his game more north/south.

Unfortunately, Bailey’s line was so ineffectual they had to move Palmieri to that one.

He's getting chances, 28 shots in 11 games puts him on pace for about 209 shots on the season, and given his career average 12.2% shooting he would score approximately 25 goals on that many shots. Just snakebitten, and his 5 assists are pretty good on our team.

but he’s playing well which is a good thing. Not costing the team in other areas thank god. Just have to get the production going.

Parise has 2 points and he’s honestly been one of the most consistent and best isles forwards.

7 in the first 12 and none thereafter 18 games without a goal now.

He will be a buyout candidate in a year

Pshaw!

I love how on this site “regression to the mean” is seemingly only applied to a hot player or team, and the expectation is that they MUST cool down.

But when it’s the opposite… a player underproducing from their statistical norms it’s… watch out, buyout incoming!
