I've genuinely never seen a pick-only trade happen this far in advance. Don't think I've seen it not on draft day, even.

What makes Chicago so sure their guy is going to be there at 18 but not 20?
Has Vegas actually committed to a guy and told Chicago this?
There hasn't even been the Combine or interviews yet lol

I dont recall saying they guarenteed anything. But if they have info that their guy was being picked at 18 or 19, they improved their odds at him.

And in terms of overall draft value, they got more out of this deal than NYI.

Should probably read what you are retweeting instead of just trusting Puckpedia. Because they read their own chart wrong....

According to their post, the Islanders should have given up a 5th rounder to even out a trade. So Chicago overpaid according to this...

Closest I could remember was 2009, Columbus traded down from #16 to #26 with the Islanders before they were on the clock. Later the Islanders would trade up from #16 to #12. After that Columbus pivoted and traded up from #26 to #21.

Edit - Found a video, Bettman announced the pick right before the Coyotes pick at #6.

With the 16th pick, the Minnesota Wild select future New York Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy and with the 26th pick, the Anaheim Ducks select future New York Islanders forward Kyle Palmieri.

How about this...

Isles getting ready to offer sheet necas (or some other rfa). They expect to lose their first, so don't give a care if it is 18 or 20, and now they have an extra second so they still get a pick in that round. Not a bad bit of business
I could be wrong but aren’t you only allowed to offersheet with your own picks? So doesn’t the isles trade with Chicago and swapping picks negate that?

Have we ever seen a trade like this happen before the draft? Have to assume one of the teams has another trade incoming.
Yes. Biy maybe not this early. Lije a few days before the draft

Value wise the deal is
18 for 20+ x
50 for 54+y
X+y= late 2nd

Odd trade and timing if there isn’t a further play from the Hawks. That said, quite a few smooth brains claiming either side won this trade as it stands.

This seems like a quality for quantity trade which I agree with in principle, especially because the Hawks have had so many picks in the last 2 drafts (22 in total, including 15 picks in the first 3 rounds) and still have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds this year and 4 picks in the first 2 rounds in 2025 - AND - they already have one of the best prospect pools in the league. In other words the Hawks have prospects and picks coming out of their ears so they spent a late 2nd rounder to move up a bit in the 1st and 2nd round.

I like it.

Ya it's kind of bizarre, I mean maybe the Black Hawks have heard whisper of their guy not getting past 18 or 19?

Ya it's totally bizarre.

This doesn't re-aquire picks needed for RFA offer sheets does it?

Offer sheets are not in play here. These are 2024 draft picks. The 2024 draft will be over before anyone becomes an rfa and eligible for an offer sheet this summer. The next offer sheet anyone might sign this year stands to award 2025-draft picks.

If you were 100% convinced of your draft list and knew there was a big drop off in the low 20s and wanted to ensure you had another top 18 pick..

I could sort of see why you'd do it.

The price to move up on draft day albeit only 2 and 4 spots might be higher

Could this deal have something to do with the trading of Josh Bailey and a future 2nd rounder for future considerations on Day 1 of the 2023 draft?

Is this returning of a 2nd rounder in order to gain +6 draft spots kind of the "future considerations"?

That deal is the kind you see in the middle of the draft when a player becomes available that nobody thought would be there. Why you make this trade now is beyond me.

It's obvious.

It's easier to trade up from 18 than it is from 20.

My only logic is the Hawks see a big dropoff after #18 and another after #50 because being this early makes no sense.
I think CHI sees a drop off after 18, and the move up from 54 to 50 is more just making the value work with the available picks. They probably felt 61 alone was too much to move up 2 spots.
