Ladd was a very effective and durable player for us.

But, 7 years is way too long.

Maybe the Isles hope to expose him in the expansion draft.

Per Sportsnet

Isles were not dealing from a position of strength here.

Owners wanted a chance to make a run at Stamkos. That did not happen.
Martin,KO and Frans Nielsen are all expected to sign elsewhere, for more $ then Snow wanted to pay

Like the salary. Hate the length of the deal.

Both the team and Ladd likely know he's bought out in year 5, doesn't matter cross that bridge when you get to it. He's what they need now, the first piece at least.

Puhlease with the complaining.

5 years at 5.5 would have been a steal. Snow gave the 2 extra years. The cap hit is fair and just like Boychuk, if his game falls off a cliff we can explore a buyout/LTIR when they stop being productive.

It's clear the Isles wanted to bring him aboard and he's a great locker room guy.

Crazy to give a 30 year old that type of term when he's just starting his decline. Grats to Ladd though!

Term is too long but he'll be a really good player for the Islanders. This will work out better than most of the deals signed today

So the Isles need an impact winger who can keep up and complement the skill of Tavares... and they choose Ladd. Okay.

I'm not sure that hanging onto Hamonic rather than moving him for Hall was the smartest choice.

No, hanging onto Hamonic was absolutely the right move, for many reasons. That has nothing to do with choosing to give another guy way too many years. Who is to say they wouldn't have done the same to get a replacement for Hamonic?

every damn contract everyone from opposing teams laughs like crazy. It's July first 90% of the deals are like that.

I am so shocked that a UFA got years and dollars!

Thank you. It's almost as if people don't realize that UFA's hold all the leverage and will thus get huge deals. Yes, the term was much longer than I would have liked, but that's what the market dictates. I expect he'll give us a few good years and then be bought out around 2021.

First big FA the Islanders have signed in a long time

Nice to finally be a team that looks to spend to the cap and not to the floor. Thank goodness for Brooklyn.

Happy for Ladd. He was great for the Jets barring the first 30ish games of last year where he was recovering from his injury. 7 years is rough for the Isles but the money isn't bad at all. They would likely have had to pay a lot more for Okposo.

Would paying him $7M for 5 years be outrageous? That's basically what they're doing, only spreading it out.
