The Preds just added not one but two 40+ goal scorers to their lineup.
3 forwards now with cup rings. Two forwards being former Conn Smythe winners. Not a lot of teams have those credentials

They just added 80 goals to their lineup, that's a significantly improved offense.
Cups are not won when your core are in their mid 30’s…

Kypreos said the other day that Tampa offered Stamkos 3M/year and that Stamkos exit wasn't pretty. Well I'd be upset too if my franchise that you've given all your life to lowballed you with that offer.
They never really treated him right when it came to contracts. Meanwhile they bow down to Hedman....

its wierd....

Would be an interesting PP unit with Stammer and Josi hammerin away; just don’t expect anything at even strength
And even at 5v5 Stamkos enjoyed such a dispatcher as Kucherov. The Preds have no one of that caliber.

Have you seen the defensive depth in Tampa? Hedman can name his price and the Lightning would have no choice but to agree. Fortunately, he has always taken reasonable deals.

Stamkos scored 106 points the season Kucherov missed half the season.
And its not like Forsberg is chump change. He got 94 with ROR and Nyquist, neither of which were considered offensive forces.

Stamkos may not put up the same points he did with Kucherov but he still has solid guys to play with.

Not to mention our 1st PP is going to be Stamkos, Forsberg, ROR, Josi, and either Nyquist or Marchessaut. That ain't exactly shabby and possibly the best this franchise has had the ability to put together.

He looks like he is in a hostage situation. Not sure he thought the color coordination thing through.

My 6 year old son at his hockey practice this evening wanted to know why his favorite player isn't in Tampa any longer, and if that meant he couldn't wear his jersey anymore (which he proudly rocks both his home and alternate Stamkos jersey as often as he can).

I'm going to go shed some more tears...

To be fair, Hedman always took less money and was more valuable to the team.

I don't like Stamkos's exit, but his value to the Lightning is being grossly exaggerated here.

I think Stamkos will settle down to a 60ish point guy. You might be able to get away with playing him in the bumper spot on the PP, if forsberg plays the wall. It's better if Stamkos doesn't have to handle the puck a lot.

Stamkos played out his ELC and was an RFA for weeks before he got his deal. Hedman got his next deal after his ELC 7 months before it ended.

Their 2nd deals, Stamkos did the whole tour and took those big meetings in Toronto and with Leafs and all those Canadian CEOs and finally got his deal 2 days before being a UFA (he took less to stay in Tampa btw). Hedman a full year away from UFA he got his deal.

This time they barely negotiated with Stamkos and once again Hedman got his new deal nearly a year away from his current deal expiring.

I wont argue value to the team and all that but its odd the way they bow down to Hedman and disrespect Stamkos.

Yeah Stamkos wasn't great here last year but he's still elite on the power play, it's heart breaking the way they went but yeah guentzel is the better player at this point. His numbers will probably dip a little without Kucherov on the power play feeding him and he's not good 5v5 anymore but he should still be around 70-80 points unless he gets hurt. It's an overpay by 3m for sure but he's not completely washed either like some people are making it out to be. We had the #1 pp in the league last year and Stamkos was a big reason for that.

Yeah looks like his even strength ice time will have to be a little protected. Good thing we have guys like O'Reilly and Forsberg that are good defensively. I do expect his even strength numbers and even his powerplay numbers to drop some, especially early. It's also the reason his pay dropped some. If we can get 55-65 points though, he makes us a much better team, especially on the powerplay.
We needed more goals at both even and moreso the powerplay. So we signed the winger with the 7th most even strength goals in Marchessault, to go along with the guy that scored the 5th most even strength goals in Forsberg and then signed the defenseman that is 2nd in even strength goals over the last 2 seasons. Then we signed the guy with 3rd most powerplay goals in Stamkos, who will now play with our top 5 powerplay defenseman. And while yest that's not what Stamkos had to play with last season. It's still pretty damn good. All and all I love what they did. They add players to ride out the peak years of Saros, Josi and Forsberg. And yes, it's likely going to be short lived, 3 years is likely. However, we have very good, very deep prospect pool, so in 3 years some of the young guys will come in and start to take over the reigns. Years 4 and 5 are likely going to see a big drop before these young guys completely start taking over. So we draft higher those two years and add higher end prospects to an already very young core.

Improved yes but behind the Stars, Avs, Oilers, IMO. Knights, Canucks and Jets mix.
It's a completely academic discussion, but the Preds had 99 points last year. Don't you think those three additions(with no significant subtractions) would be worth at least 8 to 10 points?

Yeah and teams never won a cup with a euro captain.. until they did.

And in any case Forsberg and Saros are 29 and Skjei is 30. So it's not a completely geriatric core

Aren't the Preds shedding $3mil in dead cap after this season, and then after next season another $5mil?
