Pull up some defensive stats for the two as well? Curious

Do you happen to have ALL of those defensive and relative numbers on hand?

CF%: 49.60% (-1.40 Rel)
FF%: 49.13% (0.48 Rel)
SF%: 48.14% (-0.11 Rel)
SCF%: 49.65% (1.31 Rel)
HDCF%: 49.84% (-3.97 Rel)

Nothing spectacular about those at all

Goal Differential Includes Both. Same with WAR. Morgan Rielly is still ahead. Also, whether we all like it or not, Offensive Stats factor in far more than defensive stats. But if you'd like, here are the Even Strength onGA & onGF for full clarity of the Goal Differential Stat

GF:
Rielly: 55.55
Gio: 35.79

GA:
Rielly: 29.86
Gio: 23.47

Rielly conceeds more shots at event strength than Gio as well, by a fair margin.

Rielly conceeds more shots at event strength than Gio, but also generates more. Rielly allows a slightly higher GA than Gio, but has a far higher GF rate.

Thanks for pulling those.

However, the way the season is pacing, I wouldn't be surprised to see Karlsson or even Chabot (!) winning it.

Chabot, in all fairness, has no chance of winning.

1. His team is not a playoff team.
2. He is currently injured leaving a 3-4 week hole in his production.
3. His defensive stats will be woeful on one of the worst teams in the league.
4. He still has many more years ahead of him to win some hardware.

He would have to lap every other defenceman by a considerable margin to win, and even then, it wouldn't necessarily be a slam-dunk (see Karlsson in 2016 who had 162% more production than the Norris winner).

To give that some context, Rielly's current 44 points would mean that Giordano could have 27 points and still win the Norris.

Yea has a Ottawa fan Chabot hasn't been the best D in the league. One of the best and should get some norris votes. But best? Naw.

It’ll be Rielly if he keeps this up.

That way the Leafs fan base has something to pump their chests on all summer when they get knocked out in the second round.

HF boards slowly raising the bar for the leafs, in order to protect their narrative I see.

Already gone from "LOL u can't make it out of the first round" to this.

Guess it's no longer leafs fans tempering expectations.

This is certainly not the time to try and take away from the season Rielly is having. It's the perfect storm of progression, role and supporting cast coming together and he is maximizing it.

We will see how his offense holds up over the 2nd half of the year. For now, it would be criminal for him not to win I think...

my thoughts as well.

Honest question for those pushing Gio so hard. How would his numbers look if he played the full year with 38 year old Hainsey As his defense partner.

Rielly would not have my vote, he's been really good offensively this year but I would hardly call his all around game Norris level. And I'd be more comfortable pushing him for the Norris if he played more.

Well since Hamilton dove into the ordinary when he didn't have Gio as his partner, and Brodie's numbers dramatically improved when he was put with Gio, he'd probably make Hanisey into an all star.

Right...but how nice it must be for Reilly to have 3 centers in Matthews, Tavares and Kadri lines to play with any time he’s on the ice. If Giordano has to play with the Backlund line or the Derek Ryan line, his offensive numbers will suffer.

Is it really a coincidence that Reilly is over performing this season relative to his previous seasons in the league? He’s on pace for 90+ points whereas Giordano has had a 20 goal season, a couple seasons of approximately 0.8 ppg (60+ point pace) and even had a comparable PPG stretch in 14-15. If Reilly does win it which seems quite likely, Kyle Dubas will deserve a big part of that award for giving him such a deep group of forwards to play with.

Watch the games. Rielly is setting up Tavares. He’s setting up Matthews. He’s creating the plays. Tavares is scoring the easiest goals of his career because of Marner and Rielly. Are creating tap ins for him. Also, Nazem Kadri is having an awful year.

There’s other defense who play with talented forwards.

Why is Hedman not on a 90 point pace? Everyone says Tampa’s forwards are better, so why isn’t he scoring more?

It’s not the forwards. Anyone who watches Rielly play this year can see that.

Rielly has been great, but I don't see how it would be criminal for Gio to win. He's a point off PPG and better defensively. It's not like Karlsson in '12 where he's completely blowing his competition away offensively.

I’m not doubting that Reilly is a big driver of his team’s overall offense. I’m just saying, the biggest reason why he’ll likely pull ahead in Norris votes over Mark Giordano is the fact that he has such a deep group of forwards/lines to play with whenever he’s out on the ice.

If Kadri is having a bad season at a 50 point pace. That’s pretty darn good because the Flames’ 2nd line centerman isn’t even on pace for 50. Just goes to show the depth the Maple Leafs have. 2 x 1st lines, 2nd line and a 4th line. Mark Giordano just doesn’t have this kind of luxury and it’s the biggest reason why he won’t catch Reilly in scoring.

You said no one in the league has less help on D.

You are wrong.

Whether they are Norris candidates or not is irrelevant.

Just take a little more care in how you craft your statements.
Uh weber has petry, whom hab fans are saying would be our second best dman. Suter has dumba who obliterates Jake, doughty has Martinez and muzzin who help him. Did you just randomly pick names without thinking?
