If phaneuf's demands are more than 6 million per i'd balk at it if i'm TML management. This means you trade at the deadline and gather assets for a #1 defenceman, everybody keeps saying we have strength at D maybe its time we take a slight step back to move forward. I would still like our d without Phaneuf if we had Franson especially if Reilly is able to make the jump.

The core of the forwards are there and frankly if Bolland is looking north of 3 million its not going to happen given the new NHL that is so cap centric!. Don't get me wrong there are always exceptions like Clarkson this past year but I'm not sure if Bolland is going to be the big Free Agent fish this coming year.

LOL. Uh, yeah.

Both of those guys will get much more than you suggest.

Bozak was hardly a major reason for the pk.

You can't compare to other players because they are utilized differently by different coaches. It's not fair to only use players that took over 1000 draws to screw the results in your favour. Look at Boston, they have 3-4 centers who can be counted on to win draws so Julien isn't going to heavily rely on just 1 guy.
Doesn't that kinda prove how important Bozak is to OUR team? How significant he was to our pk?

How does using an amnesty on JML and a regular b/o on Komi leave us with less cap space than keeping JML on the books ?

Here is some info on both to compare:http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Mike...e-Leafs-Cap-Crunch-Leaf-Buzz-at-930/120/53136

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl...e-leafs-mike-komisarek-compliance-buyout.html

Using it on Komisarek cleared $4,500,000 instantly/no trade value was the main factors. It was the higher cap hit on shorter term but,a trade value that exists for Liles with a slight salary retention avoids a monster six year wait to rid the salary through buy-out.

Nonis doesn't want that buy-out cap hit hanging over the team going forward apparently. So the question remaining is how little would he be able to have to retain when he moves JML.

$875,000 of it would be the most i think and that the reasons why it shook out as it did. Now it is just a matter of moving Liles. Even a million retention is the cheaper/faster way to resolve this.

There's a reason they're being paid less then Phaneuf which makes it all the more crucial to sign him.

Hey i said already i like him. I said also that i wouldn't give him more than his present salary on the next one!

Why are ignoring the fact we have only 10 players signed and cap space is 33 mil not 35 .

I never said we couldn't get under the cap , I said if you want to keep the majority of your key players it's going to be a tight fit . You also left out Gards and him and the 3 players you mentioned will probably cost us at least 20 mil and leave us roughly 13 mil to sign 8 players .

You can't expect to keep everyone in a salary cap system if the players are improving and succeeding there will be a need to restructure the roster to maintain competitive balance.

Chicago is the best example and some moves they made were pretty significant. They identified their core and traded the others periodically.Thats just the nature of the game now and you are trying to figure out how to keep everyone as the basis of your dicussion.

Exactly !!!!

Bozak is a one man show in Toronto when it comes to taking draws.

Bozak doesn't get enough respect and his contract is a awsome deal for everyone involved. He will most likely improve again this year.Still he will be over burdened with criticism later. Criticism is fine if its fair and some going his way is fair. The amount he gets i see as unfair though.

and something that's overlooked when it comes to faceoff% is the quality of competition in the faceoff circle.

Bozak's faceoff percentage is made to look less impressive than it actually is, because Randy leaned so heavily on him in the dot - Bozak took almost all the draws against the other teams' top faceoff men, while the other leafs' centres faced much easier matchups in the circle.

I think people are severely overplaying how bad Bozak's contract is.

Most agree about the little things he does well, and has scored at a 50+ point rate in all but his second season. If he can put up another 10 points and make himself a 60 point player while still doing the other things he does, then his contract starts looking like a bargain. There's a pretty thin line here, and he has been improving his overall game every season.

Is that so. What are you going to do about it? Maybe a petition? Just kiddin. There is nothing you can do about it. Thats market value for a UFA with his tools.

 Yes Bozie will be proven to be overpaid like Clarkson. Over paid sports athletes are the norm however. Look around the league..its not just the Leafs. You see how much mediocre hockey players make on other teams..and realize almost every team has them. The key is to minimize the overpaid contracts and get more of the "bargain deal" guys. Some luck but some comes from good front office. I don't mind overpaying for superstars. Top ten players. I'm not sure the Leafs have any...perhaps Kessel. Definitely a top ten winger IMO.

Other than that, overpaying for middling players will inevitably be the downfall of most teams.

It seems he got the Market rate for a Player of his stature. It's the Market that's inflated.

Unless of course you believe that no other Team would have paid him.

What forward can you not say this type of thing about?

If he scores 10 more points than he ever has his contract looks better.

Exactly. He's on par with many comparable players around the league.

I was bored at work today so I did some matchup comparisions (thanks to www.leftwinglock.com).

Who were Bozaks most common opponents (centres) when on the ice? A team-by-team breakdown on the most common line matching opponent for each game against these teams. Ex. Crosby was the most common opposition for Bozak in all three games against Pitsburgh.

Bos: Bergeron, Krejci (x3)
Pit: Crosby (x3)
TB: Stamkos, Pyatt, Vinny
PHI: Schenn, Cout, Knuble
Buff: Ott(x2), Hodgson, Ennis
MTL: Deharnais (x3), Pleks
NYI: F.Neilson (x3)
Ott: Turris (x3), Smith (x2)
Wsh: Backstrom (x2), Riberio

Overall, I think he's done very well for the player's he's matched up against. I also think his point totals are completely underratted.

The argument "50pts with Kessel isn't enough; he should have 70" is absurb. The most common forward line iced this past season was JVR-Bozak-Kessel. How many pts did JVR put up on Kessel's line? 32pts in 48 games (55 pt pace). How many pts did Bozak put up? 28 pts in 46 games (50 pt pace).

Who the hell said he had to put up 70 points? An actual 50 point season would be nice.

A 47pt season (73 games) followed up by 28pts in 46 games. If coming up 3pts shy of 50pts in a shortened season is enough for you to consider his performance sub-par for not hitting 50; then you my friend will forever be one of the constant Leaf complainers.

Whats your opinion on JVR playing on the top line? He and Bozak have nearly identical career totals and playing alongside Bozak and Kessel this year he had very similar production to Bozak.
