I'm a man. I'm fourty (two), and I BARELY remember the Walter Payton, Jim McMahon teams. I think Payton's last year was the first year I followed football all that much.

Worst Super Bowl party ever. (Jan. '86) Not a fan of either team, but such a dud of a game, ushering in a nice long run of dud SB games. Although it did provide one classic moment, or at least the Press Day beforehand did: A Pats player was asked if the Bears "Super Bowl Shuffle" song and video gave them an advantage, and he responded something like "If I need a brain transplant, I want yours because it's never been used."

Rihanna is the #8 best-selling musician of all time on this wiki list, with 230-250 million record sales. In terms of certified units (including streaming), she's actually ahead of the rest of the top 10 including the Beatles, and also ahead of Taylor. Taylor is moving up quickly, but she is still about 50 million record sales behind Rihanna.

I think the confusing thing with Rihanna is her sales are more outside the US-British markets than the other names on that list.
Yep. Sales was only part of the equation I was alluding to though. As I mentioned, social media plays a huge role as does image, marketing, tours, etc... Even her followers have a nickname (Swifties).

Like I said earlier, I can't imagine what it would have been like if social media was around back when the Beatles or MJ were big. My aunt once said that part of the appeal of the Beatles was that you heard so much about them without actually getting that much real information, so their legend grew in absence of that information. Maybe more social media coverage wouldn't have added to their allure? Who knows but fun to think about.

On the flip side, you then have "artists" like Cardi B & Lizzo who would be completely irrelevant if it weren't for some inexplicable amount of unwarranted social media hype...like literally only popular because they were able to "loud & proud" themselves into popularity

Whatever, you are splitting hairs. There was a very large contingent of people that looked at Jackson as some sort of weirdo when all that went down. That's not new news, particularly as it related to the kids stuff. Elton John said in a memoir that MJ was genuinely mentally ill and even said he went off the deep end.

Fair enough.

My post wasn't responding to your statement about MJ's fame. After reading your post and considering it, I didn't necessarily disagree with your assessment, thus I didn't comment on it. I was only responding to your line about "deep end".

EDIT: the only thing I'll add is that the effect of social media really aids the popularity and following of current artists. Swift probably has 300M followers on various social media outlets. That kind of reach didn't exist back in MJ's days. I'm sure he would have had an even bigger following if it did exist back then.

I remember the 85 Bears very well, particularly as a Packers fan. So many amazing characters on that team.

I didn't remember their Super Bowl appearance with Rex Grossman and actually had to go look it up. A truly vanilla team that put it all together.
yeah truth be told that Grossman SB appearance was more about Urlacher and their defense than it was their offense. No idea how that team finished 13-3, and as Dennis Green once said about them "they are who we thought they were", only Indy didn't let them off the hook in the Super Bowl. One of the most "mid" contenders I've ever seen in football.

Devin Hester was pretty much the offense and he was mostly special teams.

Urlacher was far and away the star of that team.

Speaking of Swift, I just saw this article on WRAL. She played at Athens Drive High School when she was only 16.

Hey, it worked for "Zee Zee Top" and it worked for her!

The Partridge Family, the Monkees, every boy band ever. Labels have been inventing pop stars since labels have existed. At least Lizzo has some actual talent.

I wonder how Elvis at his peak compares to the Beatles at theirs?
I wonder the same. I remember when I was a very young kid, my Mom going crazy over getting to finally see Elvis in a concert. This is when he was fat Elvis strung out on drugs, but she said she had to see him before she dies.

She got to see him and he died 4 months later.

I remember exactly where I was when he died. My Dad had taken my brother and I out fishing at a local spot where we fished often. After loading the boat onto the trailer, there was an Elvis song on the radio as we drove toward home. Then there was a 2nd. When the 3rd Elvis song came on, my Dad said "Elvis died". I asked how he knew and he explained that the radio station was playing Elvis songs back to back to back which they only do when someone dies.

Sure enough, after the 3rd song the announcer came on and relayed the news.

When the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan, half of the televisions *in existence* in the United States were tuned in.

Taylor Swift is big, but no one was bigger than the Beatles when the Beatles were THE BEATLES.
Hhhm….I’m an old guy that remembers the Beatles USA invasion as a 8 yr old but as a music fan I wouldn’t undersell Elvis. He was immensely popular too.

50% share is nothing compared to what Elvis’ ratings were on Ed Sullivan:

If I had to guess, it seems the Beatles had a bigger influence. Probably since they were from Britain they had a more global appeal.

But yeah Elvis was no slouch.

After looking into it just a bit I'm thinking that Elvis was probably bigger, even taking into account global appeal. Beatles had more album sales but that doesn't account for all of the Elvis singles that sold towards the start of his career, when singles tended to far outsell albums in general. And for a number of years Elvis was one of Hollywood's top box office draws and one of its highest-paid actors, starring in 31 feature films and two theatrically released concert documentary films.

Here's an interesting article about a comparison 2 computer scientists did using algorithms similar to what Google uses to compare the historical reputations of the two megastars.

Hurts really made bad decisions in the closing minutes. First the awful pick, then on 4th down with the game on the line, he throws a low % deep ball into double coverage.

I kinda get it, Eagles are going to make the playoffs and likely win their division as well so they can afford to take risks, just seemed like 2 poor decisions.

I was mystified by that 4th down, game ending heave. Smith is tiny. He’s not outmuscling anyone. Maybe there wasn’t anything else available.

Is Justin Herbert awesome? I feel like the Chargers lose a lot of winnable games. A lot. He gets a ton of “he’s a top X QB” talk - and his very talented teams simply don’t win much.

Bears suck…

In general yes, they aren't very good but today they look like a pro bowl team.

Personally I think he's kind of overrated. His coach makes some baffling decisions but so does he.
