GDT: Non-Panthers NFL Discussion part 3: Meet the new season, same as the old season?

I guess so, but that sounds like the description of an Offensive Line coach.

Word is that they tried to hire him as an O-Line coach in the off-season, and he declined. So maybe that's also part of it -- he wanted a bigger role if he was going to come on board, and since they've got nothing left to lose at this point, they figured they'd give it to him. As you say, if the season is toast, it's a low stakes tryout with a high draft pick as a worst case scenario.

Hiring coaches is frequently a no-win. Hire a guy with experience: "Another re-tread due to the old boys networks". Hire a guy without experience: 'Oh boy, quite the risk hiring a guy with no experience"

About the only "safe" option is to hire a protege of a successful coach, but that doesn't alway pan out either.

Brindy was panned by a large number of fans/media. No head coaching experience and limited assistant coaching experience on bad teams. Fun to go back and read that mainboard thread.

It's embarrassing how many of us were ready to riot when Dundo hired RBA. Who knows, man.

This is often true, and it might work splendidly, but typically the guy with "no experience" in these situations will either have high-level coaching experience as an assistant, just maybe not for as long as you'd like. Or maybe they were only a head coach at a lower level. This is a guy like St. Louis that had only really coached at the high school level.

True, but by all accounts, St. Louis is doing well in MTL so you never know.

In the end, team talent wins out. A bad coach makes the team underperform the talent level. A good coach makes the team perform at the talent level. A great coach makes the team slightly better than the talent level.

Rod's a great coach, but give him the talent of some of the Canes from 10 years prior to his coaching stint and he'd likely be fired by now.

I have no idea if Saturday will be good or not. I just don't put much stock anymore into coaching history.

Jeff Saturday is the new coach in Indiana. Zero NFL coaching experience.

I mean f***, I coached the Detroit Lions to a super bowl appearance using EA Sports Head Coach video game in 2006 and I don't get so much as one phone call.

With a name like that he's definitely a college coach at best.

Kind of odd when you think about how Mueller was hailed as a great hire and RBA wasn't....weren't the both just assistants for a number of years before getting their shot?

Kirk was seen as a coach on the rise IIRC. Nashville I think wanted to keep him in Milwaukee coaching the Admirals but ultimately gave him permission to pursue the Canes job.
