What a great trade considering were getting picks back.

Guess that means Irv Smith Jr. Is indeed going to miss at least 6 weeks.
Hockenson has had flashes, but never lived up to his projections... still a decent move. Wonder if the Vikes can get any semblance of consistency from him.

They should just move on from Irv. Never healthy and isn't a world breaker when he is.
Hearing TJ's 5th year option is $9.4m, Lions didn't want to pay it. Based on his history, the Vikings might not either unless he shows us something more than he's been.

Edit: his 5th year option was already not picked up, so he's a UFA after the season.

8-10 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Schef confirmed it a few minutes ago.

Trading away a late 2nd thats probably going to be pick 50+, for the Lions early 4th thats probably going to be in the top 100 is a great trade.

I havent done the research myself but ive heard his 5th year option was picked up.

I thought Detroit did pick it up the 5th, I’m fairly certain they did and he’s signed through next year. Irv is a UFA after this season however and I think they’ll move on.

I like the move, we essentially just traded down for him and while he sits 5th in the league in TE receiving yards, he’s got more in him that can hopefully come with KOC and Kirk.

Hockenson, drafted by the Lions in the first round of the 2019 draft, will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.
That's why the rental price. Lions traded him to move up 2 rounds in 2023 and one round in 2024.
A trade that only cost us draft position.

Interesting that ESPN is reporting that. Sportrac shows he’s under contract and Yates, Rapaport, Schefter, Kaplan and more are all reporting the option was picked up. Including an older release from the Lions.

Everything I’m seeing says that it’s been picked up as well.

This trade essentially fits our “window” with Kirks contract and some of the aging players and their expiring contracts.

Never been a big Irv Smith fan. Like this move, on paper, though TBH I liked Mundt as an old school TE with decent hands.
One more weapon for Cousins, i guess?

Those high ankle sprains are a bitch, except in hockey, where the boot acts as a cast.

I think Irv has been great this year when healthy. Other than the dropsies in week 1 coming back from the hand injury, he's been very good and has made some clutch catches.

Hockenson was a former top 10 pick, really big bodied tight end that gives Minnesota yet another massive underneath. Teams are going to have a headache trying to defend Thielen, Osborn, Jefferson, Cook and now Hock.

Chase Claypool to the Bears. Apparently they swiped him up late after the Packers were reportedly getting him.... the Bears wanted him more, and wanted to ensure the Packers didn't get him.

As a Chase Claypool owner in a dynasty league, I'm not sure how I should feel about this lol

Clay pool could easily become a monster if he just matures. He has some freakish ability but he is not very smart it seems with his choices.
He can get the dropsies at times too. It's the only reason he didn't take off more in Pittsburgh. Dangerous with the ball in his hands, not so reliable trying to get the ball into his hands.

I still think the NFL goes overboard on draft pick value outside the first round.
When you have a 55 man roster...

One of the biggest issues with the Vikings is that they couldn't even get backups to help fill out their rosters.

But you can find contributors in the later rounds: Amon-Ra St. Brown went in the 4th round last year and he's doing well in Detroit, Davis Mills is the starting QB for Houston and he went in the 3rd. Bynum was a backup safety last year and is now the starting safety for Minnesota. He went in the 4th round right before Chuba Hubbard.

Unlike the NHL, you can find good players in the later rounds that help fill out your roster quite consistently.

I still think the NFL goes overboard on draft pick value outside the first round.

You get your depth from those late round picks. It rounds out the 55 man roster for the few special teams plays a game and fills in the numbers of the 14? man practice squad. So that's 69 players needed by the team without even taking into account for the players on LTIR (NFL version) that don't count towards the roster number.

Just for comparison that is an entire NHL, AHL, and ECHL team that is needed by a single NFL team.

NFL drafting is also more accurate because the players are all at least 3 years out of highschool. Boldy (basically the entire '19 draft class) would have been draft eligible for the first time this last summer if they were football players.
