I think the Oilers are going to trade for a RHD at some point. A great player like Noah Dobson from NYI would certainly fit the bill.

The question is do they have enough futures to entice Lou Lamoriello to make a deal?

two questions

how do they afford him? He is a RFA after this season and the oilers already have Bouchard wanting between 9 to 11 mill a year and Dobson is going to get 6 to 8 based upon recent contract handed out. Leon's new contract is starting next season. Unless the cap is going up to 100 mill next season the oilers can not afford him

why do the NYI trade him?

No. Dobson isn’t available. You can have Mayfield for a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

You can have Pulock for a 1st + Sam O’rielly
Dobson can be available actually. He just doesn't make sense for EDM with Bouchard in the fold and their lack of assets.

I think the Oilers brain trust want a smooth skating ,puck moving defenseman added to the right side. That is what the local media reports anyway.

Not sure what the Oilers can offer, either. They have Savoie and Beau Akey and some late firsts. That's about it for futures.

Trading Dobson would be a Mike Milbury trade. I have to hope LL is not quite that stupid (though he moved Devon Toews for next to nothing). It you want Pelech or Pullock then we can chat. Dobson is not the problem on the NYI.
You mean you don’t want another GM who gets pushed by ownership to sell off all young assets for garbage so they can bankrupt the team to build a mall?

Cant really chat about Pelech or Pulock, they both have full NTCs.

Isn't Dobson kind of a shit defender who's due the same sort of raise that Bouchard is about to get?

I don't think the Oilers are targeting a defenseman that's going to blow the doors off. They just don't have the long-term cap flexibility to do that. They need a guy that can contribute alternating back and forth between a 4/5 role. A good puck retriever with decent first pass.
I think NYI fans are hoping he bounces back in the right direction, and if he can do that while getting less money because of this performance, I'd say that's a win in the long run for them. I think he priced himself out of that bigger deal.

In Dobson’s case the defense is so bad that it will cost him millions every year. 8M tops, I could see an extension as low as 6.5 though.

Back and forth between a 4 and 5 sounds like Mayfield but I’d prefer to keep him

Mayfield is actually who i would target if I was the Oilers, the salary is easy to absorb.

I was really hoping the Oilers would sign him when he was a FA

LOL. Dobson over Bouchard in 2024?

Yeh right.

Oh yeh I’m sure his 1 pt in 5 playoffs games is going to help Edmonton more than Bouchard generational playoff production.

If Dobson would sign around 6.5-7m I'd be all in on emptying the cupboards for him. I expect even with the down season 8-9m range on an extension.

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Dobson
Kulak - Emberson

Move Kulak and Kane in the off season as cap move as both are entering the last year on their deals. Cap wise that could work and my god that top 4D core

1000% no, because the Oilers prospect pool doesn't consist of overpaid veterans on long-term deals.
