I don’t think we need them all the time, and I would be more interested in more functional toughness throughout the lineup. But arguing whether or not goons can have a positive impact on the group in a chippy game is as pointless as arguing whether snow tires are preferable to all seasons. Different situations call for different tools.
I think it would benefit us, if Simmonds could keep up this one more season. It was damn shame we didn't get Perry, when we had a chance, but hopefully Wayne can fill that slot for this year.

I'm just baffled if we still hope we should go to that two tough guy setup, but it doesn't seem like we hit home run with either of our three letter acquisitions. So it's natural to test different solutions and it would be nice to see Wayne finish this season here.

Seems to be real solid person and good presence in dressing room. No offense towards Clifford, but he should be spare for Wayne. Nothing more in the NHL.

Can we kick Dekes for Days from the thread.

This thread has become:

Simmonds/Clifford injected into the lineup, which helped leafs dominate the most physical game of the season. Players say that simmonds/Clifford played an important part. Simmonds/Clifford assist on game winning goal.

Dekes for Days:

Simmonds/Clifford had 0 impact on the game.

This is ridiculous. Please remove.

More accurately, Simmonds lightly bumped Scheifele post-whistle after the ruckus had already died down, and took a bad penalty. Nobody was dissuaded from anything because of that.

Just remarkable the lengths you will go to try and downplay an effective little roster tweak that resulted in a gritty road win despite the players saying otherwise.

normally zekes for days would automatically agree with anything our young stars said...but not this time. Even Matthews saying he wanted them in the lineup isn't enough.

Can anyone tell me why Marner was run from behind and no one did anything? What is the point of tough guys? I thought they were there to deter people from doing these things. Nothing happened after that too.

Simmonds/Clifford brought some energy, but they didn't deter or respond to anything. Rielly responded, and at least two players got run.

Not against one in the lineup, but this narrative they did something to deter the other team is nonsense, they did provide energy though.

Has even one person mentioned that they deterred the other team?

You guys don't get it. Simmonds and Clifford both had terrible expected goals in that game. Plus the predictive outcome of the rough stuff isn't quantifiable so it must be ignored. And it makes me feel bad.

Because people on these boards are stupid and have gotten way too much into analytics and ignore everything about the game that doesn't say so on a spreadsheet. When even our best player says things that he likes it when they are in the lineup and we win games and coincidentally our entire team starts to play with some passion for once instead of being afraid they still have something to say. For some reason they also think when people want guys who play physical we only want goons and funny enough when these guys do drop the gloves they bitch about them doing that too. Can't win with them. They love to complain about 4th liners and make excuses for the guys making 10+ million dollars.

lol some very patronizing comments in here from people claiming others dont know anything or clearly havent played high level sports etc...simply because somebody else has a different opinion.

funny thing is, everyone here is posting in the same forum and going back to the regular jobs tomorrow not being paid to be involved in sports in any way.

Was confused about some of you guys comments and then I realized you guys must be replying to those on my ignore list and it makes perfect sense.

The team won and by far played the best game of the season as a team and yet those on my ignore list still complain about our 4th line. I guess they only want our top guys to play well and lead the team bc they will always have the depth players to blame for not pulling their weight.

Didn’t Marner got smashed during the PP and JT scored like 5 seconds later.

Just got back from Vermont and caught the game. Man am I glad I didn’t just look up the score!

So many good things to say about this game but my favorite moments was the physical response when the Jets tried to run our players and Samsonov keeping up his steady play.

Great f***ing game all around.

Who was the shitbag that tried to run Tavares with a flying elbow right before Robertson took that big hit? Appleton? I wish somebody laid his ass out too

Simmond's assist on the Kampf goal = zero impact LOL :sarcasm:

And of course this beauty in case some missed it

LOL. I like good players too, but I also like winning.

Good on Keefe for making that lineup decision.

Ahem****

Dubas/Keefe finally reading my posts might have something to do with it.... just saying.... ;)

So with Clifford / Simmonds in the lineup, the team responded to a team that attempted to injure multiple times this game in a manner different from their game two nights ago. And post game, the reigning MVP of the league says that having them in the line up brings energy and intensity to the team.

Enough for me to believe they made a difference.

I don;t know about you but what I heard was Matthews saying "Dubas' team building is trash. We need toughness on this team" ;)
