Confirmed Trade: [NJD/PIT] Cody Glass, Jonathan Gruden for Chase Stillman, Max Graham, 2027 3rd round pick

Bizarre deal for New Jersey. Glass is a defensive 4C, not sure why they're trading a 3rd and a decent prospect in Graham for that.

I don't think Stillman is anything of note, but one benefit with him is that he's not veteran status in the AHL going forward while Gruden is. The Penguins AHL team has a lot of vets right now (part of why they're really good) and they probably didn't want to waste a veteran spot on Gruden. Gruden is under contract for next year, so getting out of his deal allows them to replace him with a much better AHL vet.

You're not wrong, but Glass has shown he can score before at the pro level, maybe it's a bargain bin hail mary to bring someone into their lineup who might be able to contribute offense at center with Hughes out.

I don't blame them for not paying some of the prices for the top-tier rentals, assuming they weren't in on one.

Gruden fulfills the requirement that the Devils have a player in the org with the same name as a former Raiders head coach

First goal as a Devil, he looked good against the Flyers. Let's see how he plays next 15–20 games.

Love this.

I may be in a minority on the Pens board but I like Glass. Dude wasn't a world beater while he was here but I always appreciated his game. I thought for sure he was going to be a middle 6 center for us during our transition out of the Sid and Geno era but I guess we have Novak for that now.

Finally turning into that 2C people thought when he was drafted?
I'm curious how he looked in Vegas and Nashville, veteran, win now teams the entire time he's been in the league.

Just doesn't seem like a great developmental situation re: getting time to try stuff and make mistakes. But his game is very likable.

2 assist for Glass tonight, 3 points in 2 games for him
Some Pens fans had a clouded view on him. He’s a good all-around player. Wasn’t advertised as being a good skater or good defensively but he was both of those things here, plus good on faceoffs. Wasn’t scoring much but he mostly played with crap. Though he had a couple top-6 stints and still didn’t produce. He was drafted pretty high though and it wasn’t for his defense.

I don’t think he was ever going to get QOed though.

Another player that does well as soon as he gets away from Sullivan

I hope Glass finally finds his groove in New Jersey. They certainly seem to have a knack for bringing out the best of players.

We will see how long it lasts. That's my concern. Cotter looked like a world beater the first couple weeks of the season, then turned into a pumpkin. Hopefully Glass is more consistent.

I liked his game every time I saw Pittsburgh play. I agree that he has remodeled his game and looks to be a decent bet to become a solid two/way 3C. Not what he was drafted to be but still a useful piece to have on any team.

A Glass-Sprong duo actually makes a ton of sense when you look at the strengths of the two. I think Glass is a very good defensive player and a good playmaker, while Sprong has an excellent shot. I'm not surprised those two are meshing well, they definitely have a skillset that complements each other well.

Get a physical LW for those two and that looks like a pretty good bottom-6 line to me.

He's looked pretty good so far, hopefully he can sustain it. If he can't I could see the Devils not qualifying him.
Extremely small sample size but things have gone well so far.

I've always been a big fan of Cody Glass as he has proven he can play in the NHL but has a lot of high expectations offensively.

I think his system works well under Keefe's and I find he just shouldn't be under a whole lot of pressure or under the spotlight. But he's been putting up really good numbers with New Jersey and may have found a home there.

NJ has been desperate for a competent 3C who can skate well, take defensive faceoffs, and has a bit of juice offensively. They had that guy in McLeod but obviously he's not coming back to NJ. Haula used to be that guy but he's old and looks pretty cooked at this point in his career.

Glass looks like he can be that guy. He has been a breath of fresh air and has exceeded all of our expectations. Plays a simple game and is quite effective in the role he's been given.

Glass's biggest issue is he can't stay healthy. Just about the time he starts playing well he gets hurt and is out for a while. That's what his entire existence was in Nashville. They would send him down to get playing time and get his confidence back, would call him up, he would be decent for a game or two and then get hurt. Rinse and repeat. Once he could no longer be sent down he would get limited minutes, play well and start getting used more and then get hurt.

The main consistency with him is that he always ended up injured.

It's kind of alarming how quickly things turned around for him in Nashville, in retrospect. The organization was singing his praises and noticeably making an effort to hype him during that first year when they sent him back to Milwaukee to "fix" his development. Then he responded with a pretty decent season at nearly 0.5ppg, even with variable utilization the next year. That's what got him the $2.5M bridge. But the Preds really have zero patience when a young player struggles or runs into some injury troubles. He got bounced around, sidelined, pressboxed, saddled with 4th liners, etc the next season, really just railroaded into non-existence with the Preds.

Granted, he didn't look very good most of the time in 2023-24 when he did play. But still. The Preds are a team that has been crying out for help up the middle for a loooooooong time, and here's a guy who just a year previously was looking at least decent. But there was zero patience shown whatsoever. Paying Pittsburgh to take him at negative value in the summer was just the cherry on top. I wasn't really a fan of Glass' playing style... I'm not sure he'll ever have the offense to be in the top-6, and he didn't seem to have enough else in his game to be a great bottom-6 option either... but... the main problem is it's not like the Preds replaced him with anybody better either. Maybe at age 24 or 25 a player might develop some of those other traits if you actually show some patience and let them build some confidence? That is not the Predators way, however. Better to exile the player and use Michael McCarron instead.
