Confirmed Signing with Link: [NJD] F Timo Meier signs extension with the Devils (8 years, $8.8M AAV)

Maybe but you have to start filling the building on a regular basis. having grown up in the area and having been to their first franchise game ever, I can say that devils fans (or ones who say they are) are extremely bandwagon. Teaching devils fans the icing and offsides rules over the years has been a struggle unto itself but I vividly remember every car having a devils bumper sticker when they were winning cups to none at all when they sucked. My favorite pastime was asking devils “fans” who the backup goalie was or your top D pairing only to be met by blank stares. You’ve also stolen some Rangers chants which is pretty lame.
I'm guessing this was the case in the 80's? Because in the late Lou era, the team had a large amount of very loyal fans that resulted in a very active message board presence both here and on other sites. But the casual fanhood was missing, and the team averaged 13-14k whether they were good or not. During the last few lean years they really marketed towards families and thus yeah you probably had a lot of casuals who were there just to give their kids something to do. It was kinda funny seeing attendance stay the same whether the team was good or crap.

have you ever gone to a regular season game at MSG? The entire lower bowl doesn't know what hockey even is nor do they care.

I can make tremendous generalizations as well.

HF posters before today: Lol they are going to sign him for $10 million what an overpay!

HF posters now: lol he signed for 8.8 Million! What an overpay!

Well hopefully he can score more than he did since the trade, he is averaging under 60 points over 82 games. That would be a very expensive player.

Yea here's the thing. He contributes in other ways without scoring. Obv the deal is primarily based on his offense but he's not a passenger if the points aren't coming. Saw a "Zib deal looks better and better" in response to the Meier deal. Zib had a career year last year and he's a good player but contributes absolutely nothing if he's not scoring. Also Meier is 26, lot of room to grow.

Dunno. Seems like a good deal to me.

Its a fair. I have no problem with the aav...I don't love the term...was never going to love the term, to be honest. You have to pay up and be competitive in the market. Timo scares me just a little bit with regards to how he'll age, but I don't think that's a problem for 4-5 years. I don't think he's Lucic or anything.

The Devils should be contenders for at least the next half decade, and probably longer. If they get 5 or 6 good years out of this contract while they’re contending, it’s absolutely worth it. Who cares about year 7 and 8 of this deal when the team is just in the infancy of its “win now” mode.
well for him to live up to his contract right away in year 1, hes gonna have to produce at least 82+ points. He hasnt been a PPG his entire career and came close once. Since breaking out in year 3, hes a 66 point player. Imagine paying 9M for a sub 70p player for 8 years?

IMO they didnt need to commit to him when they have an amazing duet of young studs in defense coming up.

It was always going to be 8 years, but now that we've gotten over the escrow hump from covid, I anticipate this deal will look pretty cheap in 5 years when the average salary for a top line forward is 10-11.

Frankly, with a team like the Devils, there's no point in concerning yourself with how things will look 6-7 years down the road when you're on the cusp right now.

4 points in 11 playoff games lol.
Ah yes. I love the posters who out themselves like this and show they know absolutely nothing nor didn't watch the games.

He was a monster in the Rangers series. Shesterkin literally had the second highest expected goals saved in the postseason, only behind Bob and he ONLY PLAYED ONE SERIES. The majority of those were on Timo. He was our best forward that series and then continued playing great hockey against Carolina where he finally didn’t get stymied by a goalie playing out of his mind.

The analytics and eye test showed that Timo was one of the most impactful Devil forwards in both rounds.

But carry on….

This is a very black and white way of looking at how he produces and not at all indicative of anything other than your ability to look at stat sheets.
