Nintendo Switch #5

I believe Odyssey came out six months after the Switch launched so a next one not coming out with the new system isn't surprising but the lack of any info about it all is a bit deflating.

Seeing that US prices are 100 more than everywhere else, I wonder why that is? /s

MK10 at $79.99 (USD)

***Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Actual price may vary.

Digital Price though.

What's the issue? $5 more than new games were back in the 90s.

Lucky inflation didn't keep up with video games or they should all be around $150 by now.

Prices keep creeping up lately and we're expected to just swallow it. In the last decade the industry really has been trying hard to push the boundaries on milking the consumer dry. Like seeing the PS5 Pro for $1kCAD was utterly ridiculous, especially for the minor upgrades it provided. Or the infamous Star Wars Battlefront II lootboxes.

With inflation spiking prices for everything it makes it harder to justify frivolous purchases like this. And that "$5" adds up over time with more games. MKW is like... $100 for us Canadians. I'm sure it'll be a fantastic game but that's still a bit steep when games were already $80 here (and pushing $90 in some cases).

Of course, people will still buy it which means it's "acceptable" to the industry to keep gouging the consumer. I'll likely cave and get the MKW bundle but $700 is still quite a decent chunk of change, and that's assuming tariffs don't drive the prices up even further.

Looks like some games will be getting free upgrades:

Unfortunately that’s life. Prices in everything slowly creeps up over time. I was just pointing out that video games have been one of the rare things that barely went up over the last 25 years.

But nothing is worse than in game purchases.

While that's certainly true, it's just poor timing to raise prices on virtually everything. And Nintendo is rather infamous for almost always charging full price for their games, even ports/remasters.

Maybe things change between now and release. I'll hold judgment for now.

I'm surprised that Ring Fit actually works on Switch 2. That was one of the games that I was concerned about. Other than the NES controllers not plugging in, most of the mainline accessories seem to work just fine. I'm considering selling my old Switch to help pay for the Switch 2, but we'll see.

Seeing that some of the "upgrades" are free has eased some of my concerns at least.

Overall it was okay and I'll be pre-ordering. I do wonder how substantial some of the stuff like the "mouse" functionality and the "Mario party where you can all see each other's faces*" will be in the longterm because a lot of stuff like that gets abandoned by most developers. *assuming you buy a camera and plug it in

I think the built in microphone sounds good especially for co-op games.

Incredibly disappointing the Switch 2 game is something you have to buy. I'm assuming it's a compilation of mini-games. Maybe the price is lower than a full priced game because I'm not seeing the quality and the experience where someone would want to pay for that.

Wish they'd expand NSO more for games like say Pokemon games where they continue to get more and more expensive if you want to buy legally in second hand marketplaces.

I think that's just TPC being TPC. They absolutely refuse to re-release the older games for reasons I'll never understand.

Seeing XD Gale of Darkness and Colosseum on GCN NSO though was a nice touch.

Where are we putting the mouse too? Most people play video games sitting upright on a couch. Are we brining in a desk to put the mouse on?

It’s 2025 and Nintendo STILL wont give us basic, universal backwards compatibility.

Argggggghhhhhhh

Still gonna preorder it, will see if I go through with it later

It's an easy brand win to put them on there for free. If the goal is money it's also easy to re-release too. It's frustrating. Pokemon is the big one because Nintendo essentially owns it but there are other games I wish were on NSO.

It feels like a an Asian decision where you're a Korean or Japanese family in an apartment and the only gaming device your family might own and that fits is the Nintendo Switch so you'd put it on the coffee table in front of the TV or on top of your school desk in your room for homework and play off the Switch screen itself instead of the TV. No PC in the home, the laptop is a work laptop of one of your parents.

If you're in North America or Europe you have a laptop or a PC or both so if you like playing games with a mouse why wouldn't you just buy Civilization 7 on Steam for example?

And lets be real here - North America and Europe is where the money is to be made in a place like the console market so I don't expect too much use will be made of the mouse but whatever, maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Yeah I don't know, they're very protective of the Pokemon brand despite it being the highest grossing media franchise on the planet. Adding RBY to NSO isn't going to change anything.

As for NSO itself, you can definitely tell that they're running pretty bare with releases. GB/GBA still have life left in them but the NES/SNES library is about as good as its going to get aside from games that require peripherals (side note, I wonder if the "mouse joycon" means we're getting Mario Paint at some point). The Genesis app hasn't seen many updates over the past year. I've noticed that a lot of the "absences" from NSO (Mega Man, Castlevania, etc) are represented in collections that naturally you have to buy. N64 has maybe 4 games left that would generate interest: Conker's Bad Fur Day, DK64, Diddy Kong Racing and of course Smash (Melee was also absent btw).

Gamecube is a nice add but I'd like to see another Sega console like the Game Gear or Dremcast.

Kirby Air Ride 2 alone is enough to sell me the console, the original is one of my favourite multiplayer games ever. Mario Kart also looks really good. I might check out Metroid Prime if the mouse controls are any good but honestly it doesn't look very ergonomic so I will most likely pass on it.

The rest of the direct unfortunately didn't have much going for it, a lot of wasted time on basic features and third party titles. Also that bizarre Switch 2 Tour game that you actually have to buy lol

The graphics look pretty sweet but I was feeling kind of meh on the games they were announcing. My hot take is that I never liked Mario Kart, or any racing game really. They can be fun with a group of friends at a party but that's maybe once a year for me at most at this point. I've just never played a racing game that had enough depth in its single player mode to justify playing more than like an hour or two of.

But then when they got to the third party games I was like

Oh shit, Tony Hawk 3 and 4!
Oh shit, Hitman!
OH SHIT 007!

So that turned it around for me. The DK game could be hit or miss, like most DK games, so I'm cautious about that.

I've learned that I really don't have it in me to get invested in any new franchises and basically just lean on the old tried and true ones (Mario, Zelda, GTA, Assassin's Creed, etc.), so of course the nostalgia ones get me hyped. At first I thought that that vampire looking game was going to be Castlevania, but remembered that's not Nintendo IP. The Imprisoning War TOTK prequel deal isn't even developed by Nintendo so it will probably suck.
