I’ll pay an absurd amount of money to play an enhanced BOTW
I played the Wii U version first so the Switch version is already the "enhanced" one, to me, anyway.

It's honestly like 98% the same experience, Wii U has just slight bit more slowdown but that's about it. I'm sure a deep drive will show things like textures or effects were better on Switch, but I can't tell.

Crazy that BOTW can play on hardware that has parts from, I'm guessing, 2010.

Pretty sure I'm going to end up buying that OLED Mario Kart 8 bundle for Black Friday. The bundle is the same price as a standalone OLED model, and I don't really want Mario Kart 8 and would prefer if they switched it for another game, but the free year of Switch Online is the selling point for me because I was going to get that anyway. And that saves $50. Hopefully after that I can get a deal on one of the Zelda games for cheap because those are the new ones I actually want to play.

Tears of the Kingdom has already been confirmed to be on sale in many regions.

OLED price has been cut because they're clearing out inventory before the Switch 2. I am guessing it will also have backwards compatibility with Switch games so unless you really want it now, I'd probably hold off tbh.

Nintendo eshop has a Black Friday sale with some pretty good stuff.

Persona 5 Royal 75% off, definitely picking that up. Doesn't run as well as it would on my PS5 but having the portable option for travel is just too tempting.

I would definitely recommend Chrono Cross for $8 USD as well, extremely good PS1 JRPG. A fair amount of Square Enix games are on sale.

I used my birthday and black friday as an excuse to buy the OLED Mario Kart 8 Bundle. It arrived today and I'll get to open it when I get home from work. Comes with a year of Switch Online so I'll just be playing a lot of old SNES games. I did get a $35 gift card to Nintendo e-Store so I'll take advantage of Black Friday price drops to pick up another game or two (BoTW or TotK are on my shortlist, possibly a Mario game or something else altogether.)

Anyone know if the Mario RPG remake is worth it? I played through the original multiple times and it's in my top ten SNES RPGs. Is there enough content or quality of life improvements to justify spending new game money on the remake vs. just playing the SNES version again?

I got it for 10 dollars in Japan haha. Personally I would take the Paper Mario remake over it.

Mario RPG is nice but it would only be a rental for me if that was still a thing. It's simply too short for the genre and there is no lack of games on the Switch.

IMO the Switch essentials are:

- BOTW: not my thing really but is for most folks

- Mario Odyssey: incredibly good 3D Mario

- Smash Ultimate: I have put 500 hours into it, 90 faithfully recreated characters from across video game history in the most fun to play fighting game franchise ever. Easy to play all night when it’s new and to you and for 10-15 minutes years later when you need something quick. My most played characters are Cloud Strife, Joker from Persona 5, Solid Snake, Wario, Roy from Fire Emblem...it still kind of feels like a fever dream that this game exists.

- Fire Emblem Three Houses: only FE game I’ve played and loved it, SRPG with some Persona-esque socialization with you being the teacher instead of a student

- Xenoblade series: I love Final Fantasy, Persona and Trails but Xenoblade is my favourite JRPG series and it's probably not close. Total fanboy, Xenoblade Chronicles 1, 2 and 3 are all masterpieces imo. They have different casts and can enjoyed solo as independent entries, but playing them all also reveals connections that leads to an incredibly satisfying finale in the DLC of the 3rd game. Incredible landscapes to explore, the best soundtracks, emotionally gripping storylines and a battle system that is...fine and improves by the final entry. Monolith Soft are magicians, what they were able to do with the Switch hardware is unmatched. Here's my two minute sales job, my favourite spoiler-free trailer that hits the emotional/music/landscapes triumvirate which really encapsulates the series.

Re Xenoblade, it can be hard to find the original 2 games in hard copy. You don't need to play them to jump in right at 3 either.

I would also highly recommend Metroid Dread and Prime Remastered.

That has not been the case in a long time. The Xenoblade games have been reprinted multiple times by Video Games Plus.

True - I actually recently got them through there. Availability can be spotty still and I don't think the average person is looking on VGP or even knows it exists.

The physical market keeps shrinking so people that still care about it will have to get to know those types of retailers.

Most retailers around me have either stopped selling video games or they have reduced their inventory. Even Gamestop is a Funko Pop store that sells a few video games on the side. I do 99% of my shopping online as it's the only reliable way of getting the games i want.

And it's only going to get harder which sucks.

One of the local game shops near me that would help find certain physical copies went under recently. Sucks.

Picked up Epic Mickey for $30

Might get Cuphead and Red Dead.

Still have a dozen titles I’ve yet to finish, some i haven’t even started.

I got Tears of the Kingdom because it was on sale for $30 while BotW was $59. Google says they're both good anyway.

The intro was very slow. No wonder it's a 60 hour game when you have to watch slow cutscenes of Link starting at things every time you learn some new mechanic. I did get past the pre-credit area and dropped into the sky island or whatever and it's picking up, so we'll see from here.

Getting into it now. A lot of it so far is basically learning engineering, like figuring out how to attach three logs together and put a fan on the back to build a raft. It's very rewarding when you figure out how to solve a problem. I would definitely get my kids on Zelda games young when I have them.

Fusing weapons to things is something that's going to take time to get the hang of. And I know there are more mechanics I haven't even discovered yet.

TotK admittedly had a far inferior opening compared to BotW, but my take is that Tears surpassed Breath by every standard other than annoyingly and inexplicably not getting a master mode.

Been playing Carto the past few days. Pretty charming little puzzle game, especially for a map nerd like me, albeit I have been a tad dumb at some of the puzzles.
