I used my birthday and black friday as an excuse to buy the OLED Mario Kart 8 Bundle. It arrived today and I'll get to open it when I get home from work. Comes with a year of Switch Online so I'll just be playing a lot of old SNES games. I did get a $35 gift card to Nintendo e-Store so I'll take advantage of Black Friday price drops to pick up another game or two (BoTW or TotK are on my shortlist, possibly a Mario game or something else altogether.)
Anyone know if the Mario RPG remake is worth it? I played through the original multiple times and it's in my top ten SNES RPGs. Is there enough content or quality of life improvements to justify spending new game money on the remake vs. just playing the SNES version again?
IMO the Switch essentials are:
- BOTW: not my thing really but is for most folks
- Mario Odyssey: incredibly good 3D Mario
- Smash Ultimate: I have put 500 hours into it, 90 faithfully recreated characters from across video game history in the most fun to play fighting game franchise ever. Easy to play all night when it’s new and to you and for 10-15 minutes years later when you need something quick. My most played characters are Cloud Strife, Joker from Persona 5, Solid Snake, Wario, Roy from Fire Emblem...it still kind of feels like a fever dream that this game exists.
- Fire Emblem Three Houses: only FE game I’ve played and loved it, SRPG with some Persona-esque socialization with you being the teacher instead of a student
- Xenoblade series: I love Final Fantasy, Persona and Trails but Xenoblade is my favourite JRPG series and it's probably not close. Total fanboy, Xenoblade Chronicles 1, 2 and 3 are all masterpieces imo. They have different casts and can enjoyed solo as independent entries, but playing them all also reveals connections that leads to an incredibly satisfying finale in the DLC of the 3rd game. Incredible landscapes to explore, the best soundtracks, emotionally gripping storylines and a battle system that is...fine and improves by the final entry. Monolith Soft are magicians, what they were able to do with the Switch hardware is unmatched. Here's my two minute sales job, my favourite spoiler-free trailer that hits the emotional/music/landscapes triumvirate which really encapsulates the series.
