So when was the last time a prospect on the cusp of breaking into the league was traded for a 1st round pick? Having a tough time finding a historical comparable. Ironically I know Fox was traded for 2 2nd rounders.

Also on that note:

Hmm..
Fox is a special case, he had leverage to go UFA because of time served in the NCAA, he told Calgary and Carolina he would only sign with the rangers, and that’s exactly what he did. It screwed his trade value and the Rangers basically just paid to get him a year early.

How has he been for you guys?
Very pleasant surprise. Fits right in as an every day NHLer. He's working his way up to being the team's second best d-man. Competent in his own end, especially for a rookie. He also sees some passes none of the other defenders on the team would try. Nice point shot. Very good skater. Not at all physical, but solid enough on his skates not to get knocked around.

I think he has a bright future. More experience and confidence are going to make him dangerous. He already wants to make things happen with the puck, but there's more there.

Happy to hear! Just like I expected as a Rangers fan. He got buried behind our depth.

I hope he continues playing well and that we draft someone good with the picks we git from the trade.

I hope you guys have a good season!

He's been a good puck mover and supporting defenseman playing the right side and there's still some upside for more since he's still pretty young. He's about what the team wanted Honka to be but just wasn't.

In the future I think you split Miro and Lundkvist up. Two guys who want the puck on their sticks but only one can have it at a time. Spreading the puck movement throughout the pairs can only help. You get the feeling that there's way more to come from Nils offensively and I'd hate to see that stifled because he's deferring to Miro more often than not.

Seems like the fanbase took a victory lap on this guy a little early. I really don't consider him a puck moving defenseman, seems to make the low efficiency safe/conservative plays too much. I'm more then happy to be patient with a 22 year old, but he does need to expand his game. Just kind of invisible most nights.

I think part of that could be due to him being sat for any defensive mistake while Miller/Suter are sitting pretty. Not that Lundkvist hasn't deserved some sits, but I feel like thats gotta play some part of deciding to play it safer instead.

Coaching staff may also be telling him to play it safe and focus on D more at this point in his development. I’m not ready to call this trade a loss at this point. He’s young and the team has been struggling for 2 months now, doesn’t seem like the right time to throw him under the bus.

I definitely didn't agree with folks talking about how great he has been, but I don't think he's been terrible either.

I honestly have very little faith in the Stars when it comes to developing defensemen. Maybe they're just terrible at identifying good talent or maybe they just are shit at putting them in a position to succeed and play through rough patches, I dunno. It just feels like it's been like 10 years since they've managed to develop a solid defenseman, so I'm not surprised we have yet another youngster who is struggling.

He started the season playing loose. Hockey coaches are always more forgiving when the team is scoring. You might call those games a glimpse of what's to come but there's a ton of work to be done still.

Harley has the luxury of rounding out his game in the AHL, Lundkvist made his choice that he wants to go through this process under the brightest lights.

I still consider it a good trade regardless of Lundkvist's career trajectory. He's a smart gamble with a low 1st round pick.

He's definitely a peculiar player. Unlike most puck movers, his vision in the offensive zone is non-existence in the defensive zone. He almost never passes the puck out with possession in my tracking data. But there's a lot to be excited about (even of his ceiling might be lower than what many thought). His scoring has increased as the season has gone on, and being paired with Suter did nothing to help him (or each other for that matter). Hopefully they reunite him with Lindell at some point when Suter is gone. Seemed like a solid pairing ditched for Reasons. I'm okay if Lundkvist tops out as a quality third pairing defenseman. He has a bomb of a shot, creative in the offensive zone, and doesn't make many mistakes in the defensive zone (ignoring Wednesday night). Whether that was worth a first round pick or not is its own debate, but I would argue he's quietly heating up.

I haven't paid any attention to him.

How's it working out?
