Even though it's top 10 protected, and a position we desperately need young talent, it feels like way too much for a guy that had a pretty lackluster first NA season.

i'm not okay

I mean ... if you're not ALSO getting a cap dump out of this, I'm stunned. There's no way I can imagine right now the money works, but you'd think some dump like Khudobin would have to be a part of this to be willing to give up a 2023 first.

Yeah, I've moved from excited to shock. They're betting huge on him now. He sort of has to work out or this is a massive failure. The risk seems pretty high.

We would've heard about a cap dump being involved by now imo, wtf is this deal

i don't understand how your hand gets forced into coughing up a 1st round pick for a guy that requested a trade and didn't look good last year

Yeah, I think that ship probably sailed. I'm pretty confused. Nothing about their off-season screamed win-now, all in, but trading a first for a RD sort of feels like that.

The only explanation I give is the Athletic reported a bottom feeder offered a very high 2nd round pick in the 2022 draft, and then they kept the same offer for their 2023 pick as well. Apparently, Drury didn't want a pick at that time, but it sounds like Dallas was determined to get him, that report from the Athletic was probably accurate, and thus we find ourselves having given up a 1st round pick and getting zero cap relief.

Not saying it was smart, but I bet that's how this played out. Dallas clearly wasn't the only team bidding so him demanding a trade matters less.

So we couldn’t cough up whatever Carolina got for Brent burns, but we give up a 1st for this kid? I like him, but man…

That's definitely where I am. I like him. I wanted him here, but my goodness that wasn't the return I was expecting.

Kid’s got some nasty tape. Clearly they weren’t impressed with the defense in Traverse city with this move being immediately after. I remain optimistic because I wanna be happy

I rarely disagree with Derek, but I can't imagine even an NHL GM (and we all know they are capable of idiotic decisions) giving up a 1st round pick + for a 7th defender. Your owner and presumably Nill himself believe this is a playoff team. That's all they care about. They're not giving up a 1st round pick right now for 2 or 3 years down the line. They're expecting that kid to play immediately and play well.

Wow, we traded a 1st.....we needed RHD bad, can't say they aren't taking some risks. I don't like the high market for D-men either.. I'll reserve my ire for the trade until he to hits the ice for us. TBD on the trade anger, but part of me is glad we are throwing some elbows in the market.

I'm with you in terms of choosing optimism. I think everyone, myself included, is having sticker shock is all. I think I'd even go so far to say maybe it's a bit unwise to bet so big simply because it's super risky, but I also wanted to see him land in Dallas because it's something that has the potential to pay off huge.

This was some genuine BDE out of Nill, and people have been bemoaning the fact he's never willing to take risks on anything unless it's a hockey geriatric. On one hand, he sort of did the exact thing most people didn't believe he was capable of doing anymore.

This could blow up. That's definitely true, but at least there's a reasonable chance it could go really well. Sticking with your perspective I'll add this. DeBoer's system makes me even more excited about this move. That man gets the most out of D. I was already drooling over seeing what he could do with Heiskanen and Harley. This addition makes it even more intriguing.

The sticker shock is real, and it hurts. I hate not having a 2023 1st round pick so much, but I want to see how this plays out.

Yeah, Neumeier might be out to lunch on that middle point. If they’re paying a 1st to get him he’s top 4 immediately unless he bombs in camp.
