Well I suppose the question is how long will it take him to come over? If you were the GM and you knew he wouldn't come over for 4 years why would you draft him? You'll most likely no longer be the GM by the time he comes over. You need ownership to step in to make a pick like that. But do you want ownership meddling?
I’ve read that a lot of GM’s prefer drafting forwards - especially in the first round - as defenseman take longer to develop so you’re less likely to reap the benefits of that ELC. It could be a similar situation with Russian players over the next few years. Not to mention, the Rangers have already been burned by Kravstov twice. Something tells me Drury’s not going to be patient with that.

Having 2 firsts in a deep draft coming up is how you keep Cup windows open for a decade. I do not buy the Kane to NYR chatter as anything more than media speculation. Drury has shown that he’s not interested in star chasing and prefers to acquire guys who fit the mold and the last thing we need is another offensively inclined winger. This team is deeper coming into the season than last years.

Btw, Drury getting a 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th minimum for 2 guys who didnt want to be here (Georgiev/Lundkvist) and reconciling with Kravtsov is great work. Doing what’s best for the team

agree on all points aside from kane. not saying by any means hes a lock, but i can certainly envision that playing out. like if it were to play out not all the kids amp up the contribution and we struggle scoring goals at times / havent found an ideal wing opposite panarin i have no doubt we kick the tires there. given his relationship w/ panarin and that he controls his own destiny there's a decent chance we could avoid a bidding war, which i do think drury would hesitate to get involved beyond what he believed a fair offer.

if things go as we hope though i agree odds are lower than media consensus. if laf and at least one of kakko/krav/chytil combine in some form of huge breakouts to significant production jumps i agree theres not really any need to chase even more offense. much more likely to be repurchasing tyler motte

Mixed emotions right now. Was really looking forward to Lundkvist being a Rangers regular, but who knows if that would ever happen with the guys currently on RD. Great return though!

1. Big kudos to @RangerBoy for nailing Dallas as a potential trade partner regarding Nils and @BBKers for reporting the interest.

Where else do you get quality reporting like that? Nowhere.

2. Chris Drury did well. Impressive!

3. As have already been mentioned, a pick like this could potentially be very valuable. A team like Dallas could be bottom 1/3 instead of top 2/3 two years in a row.

4. Look, there have been much talk about our kids bolting and what not. Rightfully so. But all situations are different. This is plain as day to me:
(a) There was a bona fide road block ahead of him on his road to the NHL, given our depth at RD.
(b) Nils is represented by an active agent in Claude Lemieux. Who was calling the shots here? The 20 y/o from North of Sweden or Claude?
(c) Given the return Drury did get, you know that more than one GM have offered less for some time. Less in this case is still more than many thought Nils would return. That info gets back to Claude.

In this case, 100% the hold-out from camp is caused by a GM calling Claude complaining about not having an offer of like a 2nd or a 3rd accepted.

Getting rid of two babies in Nils and lias for Cuylle and a first in what people say is a great draft. Not bad salvaging decent value for two malcontents

Colorado
Minnesota
St.Louis
Dallas
Nashville
Winnipeg

Edmonton
Calgary
Los Angeles
Vegas
Vancouver

Eleven teams can make the playoffs in the west.

Anaheim
San Jose
Seattle
Arizona
Chicago

Those five teams round out the west.

The Stars could be really good or they could be like last season. They were a wildcard team. New coach. The Stars need to re-sign Robertson. Marchment should help them.

Minnesota traded Fiala for future assets. MAF for Talbot in net.

Nashville added McDonagh and Nino.

Winnipeg didn't do anything. The Jets hired Rick Bowness after Tortz turned them down.

St.Louis is the same team. Husso left as a free agent. There were times where Husso outplayed Bennington last season.

Colorado probably wins the division. Kadri left as a free agent. Georgiev replaces Kuemper. Manson re-signed. Rodrigues was signed last week.

Dallas could be a top 3 team in the central.

Dallas made the most sense. The Stars needed to replace Kiingberg. The Stars don't have money for a replacement. The Stars didn't have a player in their system to replace Klingberg. Lundkvist is the best young RHD available. The Stars had so many young forwards in their system. The Stars could insert Lundkvist into their lineup this season and he will give them quality minutes at a cheap number for two more seasons. The Stars addressed their need on D in the 2022 draft but those players are future players. Nils can help them now and in future seasons. Lundkvist helps them more than a 2023 draft pick. He can be there for a very long time.

I’m a big Kravtsov fan, and I hope he sticks here, but I have a feeling he’s going to get the Amonte treatment. They’re going to let him play with Panarin, rebuild his value, and trade him for veteran depth and grit for the playoff run.

Really happy with this return for Nils, even if he goes on to pull a Zubov in Dallas.
The Amonte trade was terrible. If Kravtsov has the kind of rookie season Amonte had and the Rangers trade him for a veteran and a playoff run it would be even worse because they didn't learn from past mistakes.

I don't subscribe to the notion that the Rangers couldn't have won a Cup or more if they didn't trade Amonte, Gartner, and Weight. And later Zubov. That core was so young and basically won two President's trophies in a 3 year span. They could have won multiple Cups. Instead trading all those young players ushered in that mentality of going after aging veterans and started the dark ages. Yes they won the Cup in 94. But I believe they could have done so while keeping the far more gifted players they traded away.

Imagine having a HOF defenseman, and 3 borderline HOF forwards and trading them all for veteran 4th liners.

If Kravtsov scores 30 goals this year like Amonte did in his first two Rangers seasons, and the Rangers trade him for some veteran rental, we should physically be outside MSG with torches, pitchforks, rotten tomatoes, and tar and feathers demanding Drury come out.

Nice return. Good luck to Nils going forward, I do hope he gets smart and fires his agent though. One trade request is forgivable but if he keeps strong arming teams it will lead him directly out of this league. He’s not that player.

Little to "Nils" that he gets 55 pts in 2 seasons?

I'm going to guess he's somewhere in the mid 40s.

I'll be watching a ton of Stars games this season.

What’s funny about this deal is it’s literally a video game type move. The Rangers have stockpiled so many young players that they had to exchange one for another that has a future starting at a later time bc they blocked him. This is the kind of stuff that happens in simulation games when you load up on prospects. I don’t think you see this too often where a prospect is moved for a 1st after 25 NHL games.

What a fantastic return. I think Lundkvist could surprise some people in Dallas. He might run that PP. Whether he is good or not I won’t be upset bc a) he wasn’t gonna play here because of Fox/Trouba/Schneider and b) the return was a good return.

I think if the Rangers make a large addition at the deadline, it will be for another top 4 defenseman. We saw what happened when Lindgren went out against PIT last year. You need 7-8 capable defenseman minimum to win a Cup

I think there’s a good chance that this ends up an 2023 11–20 or 2024 1-16 pick. Unreal return for a guy demanding a trade.

Lundkvist is a very underrated prospect by fans in the league. I thought he was already a bottom pairing NHL caliber defender in his stint, and there’s clearly a lot of time/room to grow.

I cannot express enough how good the 2023 draft is even for our primary positional need.

If the Rangers keep the pick, they have a good chance at picking a better player than Lundkvist. If they don’t, it’ll be moved for a major deadline asset.

For those interested:

Early potential 11-20 range for 2023 centers

Nate Danielson
Calum Ritchie
Charlie Stramel
William Smith
Otto Stenberg

(Bedard, Dvorsky, Fantilli, Carlsson, Yager likely top 10)

Potential top 2024 centers

Macklin Celebrini
Christian Humphreys
Oskar Vuolett
Michael Hage
Nathan Villeneuve
Ths time, if there's an Elias Peterson at 7ish, I hope they just move up to get him. Dont eff around. Move up and get the best c you possibly can. Shit I'd gladly move kakko, chytil, a d prospect, a 1st to get in the top 5 if they think a c has top 20in the league potential

And I like kakko and chytil a lot. I wanted us to try a 4-5 year deal w both. But neither should get in the way of going up to get an elc potential superstar c

If you guys want to literally lololol.

Go to "other rival teams" boards and read the reactions to the Nils trade. My favorites are the "league made Dallas trade the Rangers their first because they are in the Rangers pocket."

The whining is hilarious and pathetic.

The last time Dallas traded a 1st round pick for a roster player, it was the Zucc deal.....and the 1st was conditional.

Didn't end up happening because Zucc signed elsewhere that summer, after Dallas fizzled out in R2.

Before that? You'd have to go back to 2007. Safe to say they've been quite attached to them over the years.

Why Nils Lundkvist, of all players, ends up being the one to break the streak, I guess we'll have to wait and see. :dunno:

So I guess Drury didn't stop hitting homeruns in little league..

Great return here. Adds a lot of flexibility if they want to load up at the TDL

Nice return for a guy with no spot.

I, however, don’t see the point potential for nils. Even strength he’ll get pushed around and struggle. I wouldnt call him soft but he’s gonna be average 5on5.

He can run a PP and will get that opportunity by default. Opportunity doesn’t necessarily translate to success.

Wish him well. He got what he wanted and drury played his hand properly.

@mas0764 wellness check.

This is a mid to late pick though IMO. Oettinger's playoff performance was ridiculous. He's one of, if not the best goalie in the world. He literally looked like a 6'5 220lbs Shesty.
