I think much of this discussion is basically knowing the Rangers have no way out of Trouba's contract, at least for several years.

Where there is also knowledge they have two RDs coming up who they think will be good NHLers, maybe better than Trouba, maybe not but certainly cheaper.

So the discussion becomes, how can that become a good thing rather than the Rangers made a mistake with the Trouba contract.

Well for one thing, at the time of the contract there was no Schneider as he was not drafted yet. We hoped but did not know if Lundkvist would take another step forward. The contract came with the trade, which was seen as market rate for a top line defender. And finally, no on could have predicted that a world health event would get the players and owners to negotiate a flat cap for the next 3 years.

And as Trouba has actually been pretty good, at least for me, there is nothing to really stew on.

It would appear, at least to me, the smart decision is to keep Lundqvist and Schneider and find a way to make that work

Yes, and there's no rush. Start Schneider in the AHL next season, give Lundkvist a shot to replace DeAngelo.

If Schneider forces his way onto the team, or Lundkvist struggles, you swap them. Ideally they both make the team and they figure out a way to play both.

Schneider is playing well in Hartford and is having a positive effect on the game itself. Will he be ready? No one knows. But at least the early evidence looks like he certainly has a shot of being ready for a look see. Or at least for a battle with Lundkvist.

That's fair, but I don't see any reason to rush him. He might be boarder line next year but I would rather he gets one more year of seasoning. It's a great situation since he won't be rushed.

The issue for me is the idea of being married to Trouba for his whole contract. If Lundkvist and Schneider develop into top 4 D, it should be those two and Fox going forward.

Realistically for BOTH of these players to be ready for a full time NHL role should be in at minimum two more seasons after this one (including where they take turns being on the 3rd pair in NY and getting 1st pair minutes in Hartford). That will be into the 5th year of Trouba’s contract so moving him at that point shouldn’t be out of realm of possibility.

Who says we are? Trouba's NMC ends in 3 years, when he is 30. He'll have 2 years left on his contract at that time. Schneider will be 22 years old. If Schneider makes Trouba expendable, Trouba will be traded.

15-team NTC starting in 2024, meaning we can trade him to 16 teams still. Half the league. Should not be too hard.

that was also before a near guaranteed three year flat cap

i simply don’t buy the idea that trouba inclusive of his contract is an asset now let alone in 3 years, when he will be older, worse, and still
very expensive

He will be 30, c’mon. Cap should start moving again. Big, top-pair (top-4 at worst) RD will always have market.

Well, in this thread the talk has been about trading one or the other RD prospects so that Trouba, Fox and the remaining prospect could be kept long term. Then it became about not having two smaller puck movers on RD.

Out of the realm, no. A team trading for a 30 year old D with an 8M cap hit, who the Rangers are needing to move to make room for up and coming RDs, does not seem like an easy trade to make especially with the remaining partial no trade clause still in effect.

Still not the context of the conversation

Disagree that Trouba has 'found his footing' this season.

Agree that NYR should pull out all the stops to try to get him over here ASAP

Trouba, sans contract is a perfectly fine #4 defenseman, a good one even. He makes stupid mistakes and his offensive instincts aren't great but if you have Jacob Trouba as your 4th best defenseman your top 4 is very solid. I have very few worries about our top 4 and hell our bottom pairing has been decent. Our defense and goaltending are our strength. If Georgiev wasn't having a piss poor season we'd be a top 5 defensive team, as is we're top 10.

Sure but we are paying him 1B money and he decidedly is not at that level.

I would trade him for a 7th right now if it just got rid of his contract.
