Player Discussion: Nikita Kucherov - Part 3

Since he hit 109 points tonight, the five highest scoring seasons in franchise history are now as follows:

PlayerSeasonGPGAP
Nikita Kucherov2023-248144100144
Nikita Kucherov2018-19824187128
Nikita Kucherov2022-23823083113
Nikita Kucherov2024-25693376109
Vincent Lecavalier2006-07825256108

This season should slot in as the 3rd highest, and next season the top 5 will be all his.

But the war in ukraine will cost him the hart again. Just like some sport experts in Canada are saying Gretsky's record being broke by Ovi should not be celebrated because he is Russian.

We’re so lucky to be alive during his prime. These franchise season records will stand for a long time and might never be broken. What a player.

The one frustrating thing is he could easily crack 50 goals in a season with his amazing release and shooting technique but he prefers to set up others. Last night’s empty net shenanigans just proved that once more.

Gretzky isn’t exactly the most popular guy in Canada right now either. Feels like complaining about politics for Ovi is just a wash with Gretz at this point.

This isn't directed at anyone here. But it is so f***ing stupid that we can't celebrate a once in a lifetime accomplishment because "MuH pOLiTiCüL B3eL3eFs!!!" And I say this as someone who wholeheartedly rebukes the atrocities of war because it is tens of millions of women, children and elderly who suffer (and should not) while the very men who could help forge peace go off and kill themselves

Based on his wife's comments it seems like the backlash came as a surprise, which I guess proves that hockey IQ really does not translate to regular IQ.

It will be celebrated and celebrated a lot. I wouldn't buy much into the fringe arguments.

Brother I hope so. Time and place for everything and all that.

I hope Ovechkin breaks the record at home so the game straight up stops for a half an hour of pomp and circumstance. Gretzky presents Ovechkin with a platinum stick and he gives a speech about how he's so honored to have his record broken. Ovi gets to grab the mic and say "Thank you" surrounded by his wife and kids.

I'm not saying a devastating war should be forgotten or should not matter. Just more like people can suspend their political beliefs for a couple of minutes to celebrate human achievement. The war is gonna be there when we get back.

It's ridiculous that it needs to be brought up because of Ovechkin's support of Putin and his Russian heritage

The vibe surrounding Ovi's pursuit of the record is overwhelmingly positive, that's really not a thing unless you look for it. There's always a handful of people who want the attention but it doesn't make it a real "narrative". Everyone is rooting for him with very few exceptions.
