Hard to say but often on teams at any level in hockey we don't say automatically the guy who scores the most goals is the best player, if anything deference is given to most points more often right?Something tells me if Crosby and Ovechkin were both not top picks and Crosby didn't have the pre-draft hype a lot more people would say Ovechkin was better due to the goal record. Perception matters.
But I guess it depends on what level of hockey knowledge the "most people" you are talking about but goals isn't exactly like Home runs in baseball either just to use another example where one stat is often correlated with greatness and sometimes over stated.
I mean just look at this thread the greater goalscorer is losing.
