You understand the team is better now than it has been, in years, right??

Yup. I have been busy with other things. We aren’t making the playoffs. I am peeking in now and then, but I haven’t sat down to watch an entire game yet this season. I have also watched fewer college football games this season. I am probably up on the amount of NFL I have watched. I got on the Justin Fields train even though I usually hate the Steelers. That is over now and I didn’t watch any of the NFL last weekend.

Uhh….well no wonder you’re as negative as you are about the team right now. It’s not like it has been, I promise, sit down and watch a damn game. If you’re up tonight, watch a game with the trooo fans against SJ like old times. We could get a new goalie tomorrow for f***s sake.

f*** football.

I am actually pretty positive about the team long term. I think people are getting unrealistic about this season. I think people are overrating the start. Teams will react to us. Teams will figure out how to counter attack.

One thing I have learned from football is an upstart team can look pretty good. Then they play against a team with a tactician for a head coach (or defense coordinator) who will figure out how to scheme against the team. Other teams will copy what was successful against the upstart team. So you can have a team that starts the season maybe 6-0 and look really good but finish 8-4 and look mediocre. All it took was one game to show some weaknesses.

Here we are about 15 games into the season. It is too early to say some team is a playoff lock or out of it, but I see the Eastern Conference dividing itself into 3 groups:

Contenders - Hurricanes, Panthers, Rangers, Capitals (surprise), Leafs, and Devils

Middle of the pack - Lightning, Bruins, Sabres, Islanders, Senators, Wings, Pens, Jackets

Falling behind - Flyers, Canadiens

There are 8 teams in the range of 2 points under Bettman .500 and 1 point over Bettman .500. We are one of those 8 teams.

Last season at this point we were 4-7-3 for 11 points, and we were on game 4 of a 9 game losing streak.

This season we are 5-7-2 and just lost our 5th straight. Time to win a couple of games, boys.

We have already shut a team out, which didn’t happen until January last season.

Don't forget that the Flyers and Montreal have bigger reserves than we do.

My "excitement" is that I see I much improved team. It's still very much tempered by what I see as a lack of offensive firepower and substandard goaltending. So despite what I view as significant improvement in terms of playing style and structure, I don't think it will create much of an impact in the standings.

A 70-75 points team realistically IMO. With the losses of #13, Jenner and KJ, it's hard to expect much more. The CBJ are building a solid base under a new coach. It's another case of "next year" but I don't think that this time it's an empty hope.
