Hasn't really been interesting with McDavid as he's been 10 or more points behind the entire season. But kuch n mack yes it has been intriguing indeed
McDavid will make things interesting down the stretch. 13 points back with 5 games in hand, and he usually picks it up in the last couple of months of the season.

Been hearing that for 3 months now.
You’ve been hearing it because the context 100% matters. I personally don’t know that McDavid will win the scoring title this year because of the first 16 injury games where he was “only” at a point per game.

It’s also because you ask the impossible. In order for McDavid to have caught Kucherov in points at this very moment he would have needed to score 77 points in the last 32 games which is 2.41 ppg (198 pace). Not a safe bet that peak Gretzky could do that in todays game. Maybe for a stretch but the point is that it’s virtually an impossible ask. Since Nov 24th (the last 32 games for McDavid) he has been at 2 points per game and leading the league. Even with that incredible pace that has closed the gap (when you factor in games in hand it’s around 5 points difference) he would still have needed to produce at a higher rate than really anyone that has ever lived when accounting for factors to tie at this point. Kucherov at 48 games had 83 points. McDavid is at 80 in 48. It’s tight and a miracle that he’s closed the gap like he has.

The reason he isn’t leading is the hole that was dug due to injury coupled with Kucherov producing at a peak Crosby level at minimum even when adjusted for era during the same span (from Nov 24 to present).

McDavid fan girls are out of control in this thread.

By the way Messier said Kucherov is the closest player he’s seen to Gretzky.
I guess Messier forgot about McDavid, Crosby, Ovi and Malkin. Guys just from this era who are better. Messier may have forgotten about Mario Lemieux as well who is the actual closest to Gretzky. Maybe he is talking about “style of play” but if not that’s an absurd statement and I have always liked Messier. I also hold Kucherov in very high regard so no knock on him.

If Mcdavid does take the Ross + Hart + Lindsay this year

1 of Lemieux, Howe, Orr are kicked out the top 4 best players.

Lemieux --> No, hes a better Mcdavid. Insanely talented and more dominant. His career would be untouchable for Mcdavid if he had been healthy

Orr --> Hard to say, extreme dominance but very short career. He is the universal GOAT D though

Howe --> Absurd longevity, but Mcdavid would beat him for absolute peak + Prime at this point. Mcdavid moves past Howe in terms of needing to dominate. At this pt, Mcdavid would need 1 cup + another 4-5 years of compiling and being a top5ish player to be past Howe all time

Mcdavid is just that good. Crosby wasnt this good, OV not close, Bedard wont be close.

He shattered expectations multiple times in his career.

Kucherov is having a career year, he's going to have to continue that for the rest of the season....which won't be easy. As others have said, McDavid is 13 pts back with 5 in hand......just so happens he has 13 pts in his last 5 games.

It will be close.

You think Gretzky would struggle against a bunch of instagramers and TikTokers? Gretzky in modern times would be operating on a whole different planet.

I probably have been one of the more vocal advocates for Gretzky destroying the modern league than any on here. I think he’s the best ever and it’s not particularly close. Saw his career in its entirety. Just based off of league scoring among the teams and the leagues elite he would be between 180-210 for his peak ‘84 version in todays game. I was just showing just how big of a hole McDavid dug with the injury and what level it would take to have caught up by now.

Closest Mcdavid has got to a Stanley cup was his face being photoshopped over Gretzky’s face.
