Clearly a case of ZAR being better.
Team did not know they could fit ZAR in under the cap and he is the better player.

Other than the 50 contract issue I love him as an available call up.

Yea I have no idea why the team felt the urge to sign him and ignored Tyler Motte who was pretty solid in Vancouver, and then again in New York and Ottawa signed him fairly late in the offseason.

Both Zach Aston Reese and Aube-Kubel were very underwhelming moves.

Players also have a say in where they go too. Just beacuse a team may have interest in a guy doesn't mean they'll get to sign them

Contracts up to 1.25 mil are fully buried during the 2022-23 season

rigth just checked max burried is about 1.125 million so his total cap can be burried.

contract count on the other hand is another discussion.

now i will wait for you to say it is only 1 yr so its not an issue....

i wish i was allowed to throw away 1 million of my employer's money and not be held accountable.

Pro sports teams certainly waste a crazy amount of money, this isn't particularly unique to the Leafs. Look at what the Bruins did this season with waivers. Nature of an (absurd) industry

The contract situation might prove to be a concern, but may not depending on what they want to do. Even if he's not claimed he can still be traded straight to another teams AHL team.

this is the kind of thinking that i cannot get behind. "look how others screwed up; so let us screw up too and its ok" .

I prefer someone who learns from their misguided deeds to get better not repeat the same mistakes again and again and again.

It's not about the contract They are at 50 contracts which makes it hard to make deals.

If it wasn't NAK, it would have been another player, they needed someone for the 4th line and/or someone for depth. The bigger issue with the 50 contract limit is 5 guys on it are playing in Europe. If they weren't signed yet(we still hold their rights) we're at 45, or if they got signed to come play for the Marlies then we don't need some of the other depth guys to fill out that roster and we likely aren't at 50 either. I don't really understand the sign and pay a European prospect to develop in Europe strategy.

A bit of an aside but it seems Ian Scott is still listed as one of the Leafs 50 contracts. Why is that if he has announced his retirement?

He's not on CapFriendly. Are you looking at the wrong year or a different website? His ELC didn't include this year so he wouldn't be there even if he hadn't retired.

Like I said in the other thread, I liked NAK a lot prior to coming to Toronto. I don’t think he was given a fair shot here. I bet he gets claimed and performs well on another team and this place goes nuts over letting another one go.
I highly doubt it. But hey good for him if so

What is the benefit of this?
With LTIR we don’t need mone t

Because Robertson is going to play before he does. Because Simmonds is going to play before he does. Because Holmberg, Malgin, and ZAR are going to stay in the lineup before he gets back in, and they need a roster spot to take Liljegren off of IR. It seems NAK is the guy they're removing and they have to waive him 1st to do that.

I have to admit I had waayyyyyyyyy more expectations of the hyphens, they've both been underwhelming. I assumed they'd come into the lineup with their hair on fire and hit everything in sight, they have been close to invisible.

Guess this is what you get for league minimum lol. Do players like Tootoo even exist anymore?

part of winning a cup is trial and error. Hardly no GM in the history of the game has won off of their original vision. Part of what makes some GM's so successful is their ability to adapt. This is just another example of Kyle doing so. I can understand why people may not agree with his philosophy on how a team should be built, but I don't understand how people can look at his willingness to go back against his original vision as a bad thing. So many times we have seen GM's live and die by "their guys".

it takes a man to be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them. This may be the preamble to something just like that.

And if you need another example:

Mistake: Signing Nick Ritchie
Problem: Money tied up to non-performing player left vacancies on the back end
Correction: Move Ritchie + pick for Lybushkin

Zero ego involved, just on the fly problem solving. Not many GM's are that willing to contradict themselves. And before anyone goes on to say "well he shouldn't need to correct himself if he didn't make the mistake in the first place", as if they weren't happy with the signing of a Stanley Cup player who plays with jam. Not even mentioning the countless signings he does well with.

Again, I have no problem with people having different viewpoints on Kyle vs. the one I have. I just feel like comments like yours are just lazy attempts to throw shade at a person you don't like. I just don't understand how waiving NAK can be viewed as a negative.

I don't even consider the Ritchie signing a mistake. We all miscast him as a potential replacement for Hyman but, I wasn't wanojng him traded per se (though the return was better), I thought he'd be a solid addition to the PP come playoffs and was playing well on the 3rd line for the few games he did.

Now the trade for the Bear was great, but as always, cap problems.

Imagine how much more heavier this team could play today if they had Hyman, Ritchie and or Lybushkin, Bogosian, a healthy Foligno and Muzzin, Simmonds and even Clifford spread out throughout the lineup.

Of course it isn't possible due to the cap, but I'm suggesting the perfect scenario that would have made this team much deeper and tougher to play against if the stars aligned for one year.

Fewer points in the regular season I'm guessing but headstong players for the playlffs.

I initially liked this move but he wasn't doing much and seems pretty offensively inept despite scoring 20 pts last season. Would rather give Steeves a chance or find opportunities for Malgin and Robertson

Terrific depth Dubas signing
How did Colorado get him last season?
He might clear and become the terrific signing like you say, but he hasn't been really that good for the Leafs. Though if he clears, he may come back and be that.

I can see why this guy was barely in the lineup for the Conference Finals and Cup Finals. He’s totally f***ing useless and a waste of space.

Effin Eh Boys ! I just booked a suite on the parade route , absolute genius move by an absolute genius GM , clearly a shake up in the bottom 6 is what this team was lacking , we don't need Defence or Goaltending or star players playing like star players phifft that's for loser teams we need to replace a 9 through 12 league minimum forward and the path to nirvana is open wide . FFS what a joke this team and many of it's fans are .

He must have attitude issues or something because he got basically no rope to prove he could fit in the bottom six. A few so-so games and that was it. You don't sit a guy for the majority of games and then put him on waivers when it's the type of player you desperately need in your line up unless there is something else up.
