Was at this game, was awesome to be there for Robertson’s first statement game!

Gotta say that Nylander just looks really impressive this season. If that first line keeps struggling to break out, wouldn’t mind giving him some games with Matthews.

Oh and Victor Mete looked surprisingly good too, faded a bit as the game went on but played a lot better than I expected.

Then give him 20 games and actually find out. At this point it is nearly impossible for him to do worse than NAK or ZAR, so it is not like we have anything to lose. That is 16 games where NAK and ZAR are fighting it out to be much better than they currently have been and take that job away from either each other, Malgin, or someone else.

Putting him on the 3rd line reunites him with Kerfoot, who was his center in preseason when Malgin was excellent, and gives him a chance to be more of an offensive focal point than on the 2nd line.
It's hard to understand this obsession on Malgin and cutting him as soon as possible. Would people be this trigger happy if Robertson started instead of him and was only "meh" in first few games. It seemed number wise, that he was ok complimentary piece with Tavares and Nylander. Shuffle the deck a bit Malgin included and give the team that 16 more games. Then kick Malgin or whomever out, but it isn't like were firing with 12 cylinder and Malgin is only piece that isn't working.

Our whole offense seems to be bit enigmatic. It isn't just Malgin. Would think that people would be more cautious, after we saw how it went with Barabanov.

Robertson will have bad games and I hope we don't judge him after one or two of those.

Got to split up that 4th line because its genuinely getting crushed out there. Kampf and Engvall have always worked well together - I'd move Engvall down to the 4th line and scratch one of ZAR/NAK. Play Malgin (or Steeves) with Kerfoot and Jarnkrok.

Robertson won't play another game in the AHL (unless it's a conditioning stint or something alike).

How about we move ZAR and NAK off the team and give a chance to the young guys.

Also put in simmonds against teams with known goons

You don't have to make contact with the goalie's body to prevent him from making a save.

You see the goalie's stick totally tied up with Matthews in that video, so while Matthews didn't make body to body contact, he did impact their ability to make the save

On the other hand Seguin nudged Marner into Samsonov and also brushed his left shoulder area. With that momentum Samsonov ended up in the back of the net.

You have to wonder how much physical abuse and punishment the Leafs star player are going to need to receive before Leafs address team toughness and deploy a policeman.

Matthews is not going to last the year if he keeps taking physical abuse like that, and there is no response from the team to prevent or curtail it.

I wonder how long this forum is gonna take to realize how true this is.

The refs did us a solid last night. They helped us find a way back into the game. Can't believe we had 8 PPs.

OT winner for the kid, 2 goals in his first game. Started 4 games late but if the kid can stick on the 2nd line with Tavares and Nylander you gotta think he could be a Calder contender
He's ineligible for the Calder

There were so many others uncalled, over the years that were much more blatant. I have zero faith in the video review guy or how they apply the rules.

I wonder if there’s a stat that shows how much the leafs have gotten screwed when going upstairs to review calls. It seems like it goes the other teams way every single time.

Who in the leagye is scary enough to stop Benn from cross checking Matthews last night?
It's probably not going to stop him from doing it. But I think the difference is. He can either A) Do it and keep doing it if he wants without so much as a fart wafted in his direction. Or B) Do it and keeps doing it if he wants, knowing that he will in fact get punched in the face for doing so. If you want to do it and get punched, furry muff. But doing it and knowing there are zero ramifications allows him to not even think about it.

Marner created the 1st contact and seguin pushed marner in a second time...

The only problem ive got with that call is can you be 100% sure without any kind of doubt than marner is 100% responsible of it to overturn the decision? Seguin still push to create a bigger contact, so the answer is an easy no so thats why i dont think i was the right call like he would be impossible to overturn it if the goal was allowed on the ice...

Sure... but those penalties against Dallas were all penalties... except, I would say, for the interference called on he play where Gio went into the boards. The rest were mostly high-sticks and trips. Pretty easy calls... I guess though, we have seen games where most of those are not called.

Our PP is complete shite right now though, so, until that changes it doesn't mean as much as it should.

Just saw the replay in real time.. yikes that's really close.

What gets me is that Seguin clearly makes a push on Samsonov during that sequence. But what that did is throw Samsonov's balance off and in catching his balance, Samsonov gave the puck the extra kick that put the puck into the net.

The puck may not have gone in so quickly without that extra little tap.

Again, not seeing the clear evidence to overturn the call.
No one did. Except the script room.

Gotta say, I'm pretty unimpressed with ZAR considering the massive cheer squad he had all summer around this place. He looks like "more of the same" on the 4th line. Certainly hasnt looked better then Blackwell for instance.
Fully agree. Really struggling to find his game. I am sure he is better than what we have seen so far... or at least I hope he is.

People are still complaining about a solid effort... figures.

NAK and ZAR have been very meh, I wouldn't mind sitting both for the next game.

I still think Nylander can drive his own line and Tavares works well with average players who work hard.

The first line will figure it out.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - Tavares - Jarnkrok
Robertson - Nylander - Malgin
Engvall - Kampf - Simmonds

The lines are untenable.

Kerfoot and Engvall have no chemistry on the 3rd line.

Both Robbie and Willy are brought down by Tavares on the 2nd line 5 on 5.

We were saved in this game by Robertson’s 2 goals on his shifts away from JT and Kerfoot on the P.P. Nothing else is working.

The only player Tavares has had chemistry with is Marner.

Because Matthews-Marner have struggled recently I would consider trying Tavares with Bunting and Marner. Nylander and Robertson would be much better with a different center either Matthews in a front loaded top 6 or Kerfoot if they want balance of 3 lines.

1. Top heavy

Robertson-Matthews-Nylander
—-Bunting-Tavares-Marner
—Engvall-Kerfoot-Jarnkrok

2. Balance

Bunting-Tavares-Marner
Robertson-Kerf-Nylander
Malign-Matthews-Jarnkrok
Engvall—Kampf-Aube-Kubel

I think this could work for the following reasons

1. Tavares had his best season with Marner and Bunting profiles as a winger that would work well with J.T. Matthews has struggled early and Tavares was good in the first 4 games before tonight so this could work.

2. Nylander, Kerfoot, Robertson are all fast, creative players that make things happen on the rush. Nylander and Robertson have both had their best games away from Tavares. Robertson also had 3 assists and had insane chemistry on this exact line in preseason. I think it could cary over.

3. Matthews and Tavares can rotate on this line but Matthews is a guy who should be able to produce alone. He’s off to a bit of a slow start. Since Malgin and Jarnkrok are both pass first guys, they can do all the dirty work and just focus on setting up Matthews. This isn’t ideal long term but it could work. Matthews and Tavares are both shoot first guys so they can interchange here. I’m just putting Matthews here to get Tavares a look with Marner and Bunting and Matthews is so elite he can score and run his own line if we elect for more balance. This is more to mix things up.

4. Re-unite Engvall and Kampf who have excellent chemistry and speed from there days on the very good Engvall-Kampf-Mikheyev line. Kubel becomes the Mikheyev filler here.
I agree with most of this, but the Tavares/Marner chemistry was four years ago and JT has slowed down since then. I think putting Marner with him would be a waste. Bunting I can see.

Complains about people complaining
Complains about the 4th line
Offers a new lineup.

Nice.
