Carolina is not even that physical of a team? They are a stingy defensive team with good depth and speed throughout their lineup, but they are not going to dominate the Leafs physically. If anything, I am more concerned with having guys like Ritchie, Simmonds, Spezza, Muzzin, and Holl in the lineup because the Canes will just blow right past them. We also won't have to worry about them until the Conference Finals, if we both get there, since I doubt either of us are going to be WC teams this year.

With Florida, you need to be able to shut down two guys: Barkov and Huberdeau. They were only 7-5-0 with Barkov out of the lineup. Their depth is excellent when those two guys are humming... But Bennett/Duclair/Reinhart/Verhaeghe/Lundell lose a lot of their effectiveness when those guys are not humming. Bobrovsky has always been up and down in Florida, and while their defense has a great Ekblad-Weegar combo, the rest of their defense is worse than ours. Massive props for their 10-0-1 start, but they have been 12-7-3 the rest of the way (and that is with the 4 game winning streak they are on right now). Also keep in mind that Florida only has one guy over 50% in the dot (Barkov with 54.6%) whereas the Leafs have the best faceoff percentage in the league. It is hard for their game to click against a team like ours when they can't even win draws, and that is against teams that are worse than we are in the dot.
You got a podcast or articles or something you post to? That's better analysis than most sites have =)
Simple, to the point and they were good points

Sure... some toughness, but one fight, and didn't even fight in the Winnipeg game... Simmonds and Clifford at least stood up that game...
Can't fight if nobody wants to fight you... to be honest the code seems to be slowly disappearing... guys like Tkatchuk running around full speed making questionable hits but refusing to fight when called upon. Same goes to Dubois.

It's disappointing to see. However, I loved Simmonds not giving Winnipeg players a choice haha, which is something Ritchie should have done.

I personally liked some of what Ritchie brought... unfortunately being up against the cap and Campbell needing a raise, we have no room for anyone making more than their play merits. Having Simmonds and Clifford offsets my concern about players taking liberties.

He's fought Chiarot and McCarron.

In the WPG game he asked both Lowry and Dubois for fights, neither guy obliged.

He has a reputation for being a legitimate heavyweight fighter, undefeated in the NHL. Very few guys in the league will look his way.

Reaves is facing a similar problem with only 2 fights on the year. Soft league.

More than his skating, it was his heart, the guy had one gear and squandered a tremendous opportunity with some kind of entitled disinterest. Seeing a guy get a shot with a Matthews and Marner and then stroll around the ice was maddening to watch.
You sometimes can take players of his ilk or showing any pulse offensively and defensively ( JVR ) but you need to be at least a point muncher to offset all the other deficiencies…..
Unfortunately he didn’t do anything , anything at all in and facet of the game other than the odd shift here and there
Good luck to him and us still a good flyer if it worked out like most of the other moves Dubas has done …
On that note , this is the me way the Leafs will have to continue to do Hockey business every year in order to keep 6-8 core players moving forward and filling in the rest of the roster with these hopeful nuggets …
Also welcome to the new NHL and sports in general , Basketball started it and then the first glimpses of this necessity in the nHL was the Blackhawks and then slowly to where we are now … The Leafs blue print is truly the new NHL …. go Leafs Go

Here is my issue, my fear that this Leafs team is still too light to take on teams such as Carolina or Florida in the post-season. Thus, there is still a part of me that wonders how this will pan out for the team. I

Where do you see us being lighter?

Thanks for the correction... though he's only been given one fighting major though, which is what I was going by.

I think Dubas was hoping for more. Our fans were too. I think Dubas made his mind up long ago (when he read my thread/OP ;)) when he acquired Clifford. Clifford's arrival had no effect on Ritchie. Ritchie's healthy scratch had no effect on Ritchie. At least he was consistant.

Uh, what? The is literally the exact opposite of what Ritchie is. He pretty much lives and dies in front of the net, with more than half of his opportunities coming there. In fact, outside of Simmonds, I don't think there is anyone on our team who has a higher proportion of their chances coming from the inside than Ritchie right now... Bunting, Tavares, and Nylander included (and they are far from perimeter players themselves).

All you have done is made a lucky guess and think it is more than that. NHL teams, or at least the good ones like the Leafs, don't guess. They take calculated risks, and Ritchie was actually a good one.

It is not probably even the end for Ritchie with the Leafs, unless he is claimed or Dubas gets a worthwhile offer for him. With the problems he is having right now, a couple of good weeks with the Marlies where he can get his scoring touch back could be all he needs to get back on track. It worked wonders for Barabanov and Galchenyuk, and both looked far more disastrous at the NHL level before going to the Marlies than Ritchie has at any point this year.

It's not a lucky guess to say that a guy who's never been a great offensive play-driver, never been a good defensive player, and takes a lot of penalties...has continued to be the same player. Investing league minimum in a guy like that who maybe has some upside? Sure. Investing $2.5M x 2 years when you have a cap-strapped club? It never made sense.

He is a rook defense and it takes a long long time in pro hockey for defense to figure out structured positional hockey .. but 4 guys playing below hash marks in other teams end with other team in a strong defensive position is generally a bad time for an offensive D to try to create from nothing .. it leads to 2 on 1s and then goals against especially on backward passes .. there was a day 30 years ago in pro hockey where if you were a defender making a backward pass in other teams end below da hash you were benched no matter how play turned out no matter who you were

Barilko disobeyed coach, won Cup for Maple Leafs in 1951

Barilko would have been fined $500 (when the average player salary was likely less than $15,000), if he had not scored the Stanley Cup winning goal by going in deep.

He was looking for a fight that game. After Simmonds wound up in the box, it showed Ritchie jawing with Dubois, and then giving him a shot to the face. Dubois of course was the guy that absolutely mugged Matthews. Ritchie also is one of our biggest hitters on the team. But I'll agree, Clifford honestly would be the better add toughness wise. He's cheaper salary, much better skater, and can PK as well. I think come playoff time though it is vital to at least put one of Ritchie or Clifford in, over a guy like Engvall. But 100% agree Ritchie has been bad/underwhelming. I don't think that's even up for debate lol

Engvall can play center or wing, pk, pp, skate and has unused size.

If someone has to be waived it isn't going to be one with multiple tools for one with one tool.
To top what Engvall brings Ritchie needed to pot some ugly ones by now, he would need to have 7 goals by now and well on his way to 15 or 20 on the season.

Ritchie did try to fight Dubois, but the chickenshit turned to the linesman nearby and called him to shield him... Then started jawing at Ritchie from behind the linesman...
