Unfortunate, predictable and necessary.

Unfortunate because of the ever-present promise and the wasted opportunity. Nick Ritchie will never have a better chance to flourish unless he somehow learns to flip the switch.

Predictable because based on his performance he fell from the first line to the 13th forward -- on a team that can only carry 12 forwards.

Necessary because his $2.5 million salary is too large to carry with the Leafs so close to the cap. Someone has to go to make room for others, and the underperforming player with too large a salary simply had to go.

Would even passing through waivers help this man to figure it out and find the extra gear he needs to succeed? I hope so, but I very much doubt it. However, if I'm wrong and this lights the fire he needs, then he could be a good asset sometime soon.

Gaining the full $2.5 million cap space would be nice, but after keeping both Liljegren and Sandin there is no one else of any consequence the Leafs really need to bring up, and the taxi squad gives them plenty of flexibility around the roster. If he gets claimed then good for Nick Ritchie -- he gets another lease on life -- but all-in-all I hope he passes through waivers and the Leafs can keep him.

Ritchie is the east coast Jake Virtanen. All the physical assets in the world that can't make up for the far below average hockey IQ. How many more teams will blow a tire on these guys before they figure it out

I remember watching many games in the St Catharines arena with Fred Perlini, Bruce Boudreau and Walt Podubny playing for the Saints.
Good times.

Haven't seen that name in almost 40 years... Man could that guy skate.

yeah why take him for free now when they can wait and give us a pick or two . lol

Because any team claiming him, cannot put him in the minors without waiving him again. Once he clears, any team acquring him can put him directly in the minors without exposure to waivers. See Galy acquisition last year.

I rec'd a walt poddubny #8 sweater as a gift (was my favourite player at the time)........ traded shortly after ...... story of my life LOL ...... get a sweater, guy gets traded ....happened 5 times ....3 nhl, 2 cfl .... if you REALLY want someone gone, buy me his sweater LOL

any team willing to pay a pick or two won't be doing it with the desire to play him in the minors

seems like this is the latest fairy tale to try to spin Ritchie as valued asset and Gally going for a busted prospect and a washed up former player who hasn't been in is the NHL for years isn't a comparable situation especially since Gally was making 1m on an expiring contract

lets just hope someone's stupid enough to claim him and clear his cap hit off our books

Why the Leafs waived Nick Ritchie and what it means for cap flexibility - The Athletic

A fully healthy roster meant something had to give to get under that pesky salary cap. Based on merit, Ritchie was the clear choice to go.

Through 30 games, the 26-year-old had produced just the one goal and seven assists. That was despite ample opportunity on the Leafs’ No. 1 line, which lagged in his presence. With Ritchie alongside Matthews and Mitch Marner, the Leafs produced 2.5 expected goals per 60 minutes. With Michael Bunting taking Ritchie’s spot on the left wing, that number surged to 3.6.

Other factors were most certainly at play, including Matthews’ slow start and ultimate resurgence.

Ritchie looked out of place up top though, not nimble or creative enough to hang with the Leafs’ top forwards. Even the fourth line seemed to suffer when he joined it.

Ritchie has been on the ice for a mere seven five-on-five goals in over 300 minutes. He had yet to score on the power play, even with sustained opportunity on the No. 2 unit.

In an offseason that saw the Leafs front office hit home runs with Bunting, Ondrej Kase and David Kampf, the two-year, $5 million contract given to Ritchie looks like a clear misfire, a panic move following Zach Hyman’s departure to Edmonton.

Ritchie had produced only marginal offence in the NHL before becoming a Leaf. He had career highs of only 15 goals and 31 points, the former coming last season with the Bruins when he shot a career-best 12.4 percent.

A former No. 10 pick, Ritchie has another year left after this one at $2.5 million on the cap, making it very likely that he passes through waivers untouched. (A claim would be of huge help to the Leafs in the short and longer term.)

In assigning him to the Marlies, the Leafs will clear up $1.125 million in cap space. All told, they project to be about $341K under the cap. That will offer the club meaningful opportunity to accrue cap space ahead of the trade deadline, with an eye on landing on an upgrade, more than likely, on defence.

Wiggle room would have been harder to find otherwise.

The reason they would wait if/until he clears is so that they can put him directly to the minors. Obviously, teams can claim him. He is on waivers. It is the thread title. LoL.

If he clears, then at least he can get some of his confidence back with the Marlies and be called up during playoff time as there's no salary cap then.

and no one's giving us pick(s) for a player they want in the minors

best case scenario is we can more him with a mid rd pick or b level prospect for a player another team has no use for who's contract is fully buriable so they offset some of Ritchie's money

No, that is a worse case scenario. If he clears we can put him on the taxi squad. If he gets claimed to bad for us. If he clears and we get an offer we can trade him.

-if he clears half his salary still counts against our cap
-no one's giving up an asset for him
-he's been useless this year so why would we want him on our taxi squad

we're the third team that has given him ample opportunities which he hasn't taken advantage of so lets stop pretending he has some value or he'll magically transform into some playoff warrior

the guys slow as shit and has the hockey iq of a tree stump , he's never going to suddenly transform into a prime Lucic just because he's still in our organization

Doubt it. Most teams don't have any cap room to fit in a 2.5 million 4th liner.

He'd be more than a 4th liner in a lot of places... Including some teams challenging for the playoffs.

In fact, one team who could really decide to look at him are the Rangers. They have some cap space this year and next. They have a need for better quality depth wingers, and they are a team that really wanted to add some size and grit to their lineup too.

The Leafs did not hand out a 2.5 x 2 contract to a guy who did not have serious interest from other teams, and I would not be surprised if some teams offered more than that but he decided playing locally with a chance to play in our top 6 was a better bet for him.

I actually think we'd need to send him to the Marlies, but honestly I think having him play every day is better for him and us anyways. And it is not like the Marlies are far away and can't be called up to the Leafs just as easily.

Ducks should bring in home. They're in a surprise playoffs race and they have all sorts of capspace.

Do it, ducks.

You got a podcast or articles or something you post to? That's better analysis than most sites have =)
Simple, to the point and they were good points

Thank you, but no I do not have a podcast. Too many out there right now and I prefer to just talk to people on here

Teams will pay Reaves 1.75 million for 2 years and Martin 1.5 million for 4 years but won't pay Ritchie 2.5 for a 1.5 years? Martin has 1 point in 21 games! I think he gets picked up.
