Guess I just give him too much credit that he is a decent coach sometimes. He quickly reminds me otherwise.

Frankly, I think AV has done a good job with the system this year. We're not sitting back with the lead anymore, and they're as aggressive offensively as I've ever seen them.

That said, his personnel decisions are among the worst in the league. He would be a top-5 coach if he knew how to deploy his players correctly, but he doesn't.

Agree completely.

He had a few horrible giveaways.

hes such an anchor on McDonagh, but right now every RH defenseman probably is.

Klein doesnt look great either this season.

Clendening's been our 2nd best d-man this season. He had what, one bad play where yeah, he gave it away and it led to the Capitals first goal on a tip, but that's literally the only costly play I can remember from Clendening this season.

He's a great puck mover, he can skate a hell of a lot better than Girardi and Holden, even if he isn't the best skater. He's really good on the PP, and gives us a RH shot on the point on the PP not to mention.

Don't know if I'd put him on the top pair, but he shouldn't be the one benched.

I remember when the "Girardi wars" were still raging on these boards, and while I vehemently and totally disagreed with this notion, I can see the value in giving a guy who's done nothing but kill himself for this organization, and beat all the odds to become a "high end" NHL player, a chance to better himself and help the team. Again, I disagree with it, but I see the human element in it FWIW.

Nick Holden on the other ****ing hand. What the **** has this untalented hack ever done for this team? What has he done anywhere? Play minutes he wasn't capable of on the worst defensive team of this generation? And then swing a deal for him in some whisper in the wind trade at draft time? Win 3 playoff games in his entire career? He has absolutely no talent or intrinsic value, yet AV uses him just like he did Girardi.

And frankly, this reflects worse on AV than any, and I mean any, personnel moves he had done in the past.

I can't crap much on Holden. The coach, who has gotta be one of the worst handlers of roster decisions we've ever seen, is putting him absolutely atrocious positions. He's a bottom pair LD being asked to play 1st and 2nd pair RIGHT D against the best players on earth. I don't blame Holden at all. As for Girardi it's a ****** disgrace he was even being put out there last year on a broken knee cap when he was absolutely awful considering McI was playing more than adequate and Boyle and Klein were there as well. That's not even human element that's just a blithering idiot of a coach.

This is 1000% on that idiot coach. Great offensive system, he works with plenty of young and old talent, but he's all too often a complete ******** ahole when it comes to certain roster decisions on a consistent basis. Shame on the goddamn GM for not having the intelligence or balls to tell him to get the **** over himself and work with the talent that gives the best chance of winning instead of sticking with his pet rocks

Every single Ranger had a hell of a time getting used to this system. So add onto everything else that Holden is likely trying to work his way through the same thing all the other Dmen had to work through as well.

bingo, couldnt have said it better myself! I actually think he is pretty smart when it comes to the forward group, its the way he evaluates, rate etc defensemen that is the problem

Nick Holden is getting the Marek Malik treatment. Guy would be a nice bottom-pairing option for this team. The coach plays him on the top-pairing. Fans hate him

The Marek Malik shootout goal is the closest thing I have to experiencing a championship in my adulthood. That one will last a lifetime.

Holden is still slow, and his -+ stats is not important for me when I evaluate a player.

Nick Holden is an absolute disgrace.
I am not a Holden fan at all, but let's not get out of control. To me he is a bottom pairing defenseman who should not be able to block anyone from coming up. The problem becomes when AV decided to use him as a top-4, further getting compounded by playing him on the off side. The problem also becomes when/if he plays on the bottom pair as he blocks Girardi being there.

Lots to this

Details please? Glass is in the minors now that the rangers have adequate forward depth. McIlrath cleared waivers. Is this the part of the play we pretend Clendening is a top 4 defender? Sooner or later, hopefully people will start realizing there are always going to be holes in a roster and a coach "deploying his players" isn't always going to fix that

You do not believe that playing a career bottom pairing right defenseman on the left side of the top pair qualifies?

Really not great so far.

Thanks @Silverfish to point that out - on the Blues goal earlier this season Holden had reflexes like a 60 years old, hehe. No offense to those who are 60+, but Holden is only 29.
I`m 40 and notice my reflexes is slower for sure compare in my youth.

How is Zuci doing stat wise? He generate a lot of chances, but not great finishing of him so far this season. (And post on the Zuci topic - so we don`t go off topic here.) :)

Is this the part where BRB comes to halfheartedly remind us that AV is an innocent bystander doing the best he can with his personnel? Probably.

I tend to give a little more slack when confronted with the reality that there is one top 4 RD on the roster. I think it's an experiment that will end when Gorton fixes this glaring hole in the roster.

I see you, SF.

This chart shows that Miller is not great without Holden on the ice as well. I see through your otherwise innocent-looking chart! This is just another anti-Miller post! :naughty:

No but really, it's interesting how drastic some of the pairings/separations are.

I've been biting my tongue alllllllllllllllllllllll season. I could post some stuff. But I won't. It's hard not to, but I'm not gonna do it! Why ruin the fun? :naughty:

Like clockwork

But to start the season there WERE other options. You know this. And yet the best choice that AV came up with is to play a right #6/7 defenseman on the left AND on the top-pairing??

Problem is we dont need him...
