Post-Sam Dickinson TRADE (Sept. 8, 2022 to Nov. 9, 2023)

Niagara to London:

2nd, 2nd, 2nd

3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd

4th

5th, 5th

I partially agree with you.

When a player defects there is usually a mittful of picks to replace them. It is a good strategy when you are in a go-for-it situation and short-term picks are a better option than a 16 year old player. Marty Williamson employed this tactic successfully.

In the case of Sam Dickinson, Niagara was NOT in a position to go-for-it and desperately needed skilled players for their rebuild. Instead, they had a hole in their line-up and the picks we got for Dickinson were squandered like a trash-panda on meth by DD.

The part that was missing then and still is today, is the relationship aspect between team, agent, player and family. The team has to cultivate that dynamic well in advance of the draft and have a strong measure of comfort that when we make the call it will get answered. Scouts play a huge role in this as does the GM and to an extend the HC as well. Identifying talent, is one aspect, but if the player doesn't feel the love - you can't convince them after the fact just because you called their name.
That is the difference between the good team and the lucky team and then the unlucky team.

An example I know of and am sure is done by the good teams is that Killer used to visit the family after players were scouted and talk to them to make sure that if he called their son's name, he would report and be happy. He also answered any questions they had.

Unfortunately, many teams rely on the OHL scouting system and do not do their own homework; Kingston last year was a prime example.

The other issue is the fact that the playoffs are at the same time as the draft, which limits the time that people can go visit.

I’d be happily surprised if they won’t drop to 4-5 I still have them finishing 6-7
I see Oshawa probably finishing 1st in the division
Barrie has me confused. They got their fames NB line together and are 0-5 since the deadline.
Niagara is sailing nicely along.
Sudbury has made a lot of changes. They have Musty back, as well as News on defence. They are going to make noise.
Kingston is going to make things interesting for Oshawa if they can figure out their goaltending.

I can see Niagara being anywhere from 1st to 5th not any lower though.

I don’t worry about what the fans think from here on out I’d worry about what DD think from here on out especially if they fall in the standings which I’m expecting

DD is going to be happy with what he has and what has shown up. This year was awesome for the Dogs, and next year, depending on who they get in the draft, will also be good. DD as I have stated took a different way to build his team. Whhile most teams want to trade to get higher and better throwing everything away DD and his GM and Boudreau have put together not only a good explosive team but have them playing a system tht promotes the players

DD's job now is to sit back and let the people he hired do their job. Also he needs to promote the hell out of the team this off-season. Get in touch with past STH and see what he needs to do to get them back. As I said this team is built for 2026/2027

  • 5th Round Pick in 2023 (London)
How many of thee picks did they keep and what do they have this year.

Also, it looks like Moffit might be ready next year. What is Robertson like, and can he take some of the games down the stretch and rest Flores?

Sam would have a valid point about all the trades if we were still in last place. The current standings prove him wrong.

Speaking of that. Barrie on a five game skid. Dogs solidly leading the division now. Still tied for first in the conference.

Moffett has a .912 sav% and 2.48 GAA
Jeffery has .913 sav% and 2.50 GAA

Humphries has terrible stats and hasn’t won a game since October.

With a Moffett and Jeffery the question is are either of them legit or are they Charlie Burns.

Oshawa/barrie should finish 1-2 Marty will figure it out I’m sure as of right now I have Kingston finishing 3rd by default (i still like Branford and BRAM more but not sure if they’ll figure it out in time) as for Sudbury I might be in the minority but I’m not sold on them at all.

When it comes to DD I think you’re right about him being happy BUT if they slide to far I could see him having a problem with it. As for his promoting I don’t think that’ll do anything because I think most of those people have said the same thing (we’ll come back when you sell) as for when they go for it I think that really depends on the MEM if they can get it in 2 years I can see them waiting it not I see him trying to win next year

Oh Charlie lol I remember having back and forth with many people on the old board when they traded him people saying it was a BIG MISTAKE

With the 5 game losing skid there are some calls for Marty to be fired in the group chat. They have Windsor Saturday and Niagara Sunday. If they lose both things could get interesting. Traded their last 2 1st round picks to North Bay and Moses has immediately looked great.

I think they lose Saturday and come in and destroy us Sunday (usually when I think we’ll get crushed we win)

Barrie is going to be going into Hell week 5 games in 9 days. this wil tell if they are for real.

I think he may have conerns but then again it is too late now. He can look at next year and the team he has but you really can not complain abut the staff.

I think next year he will be pushing to be a top 5 team the higher they are in the standings with the players returning the better his bid looks. A lot will also depend on how high some of the players are draft wise. BUT if he can ice a team that allows Niagara a good chance at a bid for the cup then the city should get off his butt.

Explain how having Ben Danford is better than roobroeck and Czata?

If they trade he next year they get a crap ton of draft picks and can hope roobroeck is back as a 19 year old and go for it then

Playing what ifs doesn’t make sense. Niagara is doing really well this year thanks to those 2 I mentioned.
People, people, people! Do I like this years team...YES! Do I think DD mishandled the draft picks he received from London...YES! Do I think the dogs can do well next year...YES! Do I think the IceDogs would be in better shape moving forward if they had an experienced GM...YES! None of these things are mutually exclusive. Go Dogs! #SELLTHETEAM

I agree with all this. However, Dickinson was drafted in 2022. At what point do disgruntled fans move on (understanding off ice stuff is very much still an issue) but on the hockey ops side. IMO 12 months now of good moves (with some slight over pays I understand but outside of Virgilio being a ? the slight overpays have worked out so far). So I guess my question is: Is DD unredeemable as an owner? If not what does it take to change that (focusing strictly on the hockey side for arguments purposes not the everything else)? A good 2025 draft (which would be 3 in a row)? A strong Import draft (showing that you have to be willing to use it if you want to win)? Smart trades in the summer to fill holes (2005 OA’s, defensive help)? All 3? If management accomplishes all 3 of those things would those who hate DD have any change of opinion? Or is he unredeemable?
