Rumor: R&P Thread | Oilers Sign G Samuel Jonsson (3-Years ELC), RW Quinn Hutson (2-Years, $875k AAV), LD Atro Leppanen (1-Year, $975k)

I’d be surprised if we aren’t in on Marner this offseason (assuming he hits free agency). Judging by the Oilers interest in Rantanen near the deadline, it looks like management wants to add another star type of player to our top 6.
Sign Marner and convert him into the coveted #1RD we've needed :sarcasm:

Too many turnovers defensively. He probably is a #4, but on a strong blueline he would flourish as a #5

Let's see how he does in the playoffs. We really need him now
Since getting here, Walman averages about a giveaway a game at 17 in 15 games. To put into perspective, Ekholm plays about a minute more per game and has 83 in 65, but he is also next to Bouchard most of the time who is far superior to Nurse at moving the puck, so he shouldn't be throwing it away as often one would think. Bouch also has well over 100 giveaways this year, same with Makar.

Seems like a pretty weak complaint. He's adapting to a new environment and atmosphere, and even that changes daily with our injuries. He has great numbers across the board while playing with a famously difficult partner to work with in Nurse. I'm not gonna pretend he has been a perfect top pairing guy, or that I've never seen him give the puck away. But to act like having 17 giveaways in 15 games defines the player, is just foolish.

Also by "turnovers defensively" do you mean giveaways in the d-zone? I'm assuming so. I havent noticed it as a major problem at all, but I've also watched Bouchard throw some spicy pizzas away this year, and Nurse in years past. So maybe I'm numb. Hard to find individual giveaway stats for players by zone.

Plays for the Leafs and was born in the greater Toronto area? Sounds like a future Oiler to me.

Bowman noted that the farm this season lacked 'puck skill'. I'd wager that Bakersfield has a tad more depth next season.
As it sits right now they’ll be looking at having Dineen, Carfagna, Leppanen, Akey, Josh Brown and presumably Regula as the defense core in Bako next year. That’s a lot of puck moving ability from the back end(minus Brown), and all the puck movers are still younger with room to grow. Real nice change from what’s down there this year. I’d still like to see them sign Munzenberger as well as I still think there’s a player there with the right development at the AHL level.

Sorry for the double reply, but I looked it up and almost every current Swedish NHL goalie that I checked, with the exception of Arvid Soderblom (who still had four SHL games and two SHL postseason games under his belt at Jonsson's age) had played double-digit SHL games at the same age. And that even includes guys like Anton Forsberg and Jonas Johansson. So while it's rare for teenage goaltenders to play in the SHL, it seems like the norm for goaltenders who actually make it to the NHL.
Exactly!
All swedish goalies are not Lundqvist, Salo or Lindbergh

Rodrigue should be gone, he's had his chance to prove that he's a NHL goalie and hasn't.

What on earth is this? In ONE game?

Go watch those highlights again and tell me which of the three goals he let in (a good one timer and two well executed breakaways) are proof that he's not an NHL goalie?

Or maybe you think he should have had McCann's baseball bat goal when he was in relief vs Seattle? The one that went 15 feet in the air, and nobody, including his NHL defensemen, knew where it was until McCann batted it in? That one?

Bryanbryoil... you've had some hot takes over the 20 years I've posted with you, but this has got to be one of the MOST UNFOUNDED ones.

For those suggesting Marner, the cap gymnastics on that would be insane.

Bouch would have to take the lower end on the price range we are expecting (or do a bridge deal, which would be a mistake)
All of Arvidsson, Henrique and Kane would have to go (Kane has to go regardless).
Emberson would have to take 1.5 or less (I have a feeling he will move on in a trade or OS, and be replaced with a 1m dman)

This would also mean no goaltender upgrade. Unless we somehow convince a team to take Nurse and he agrees to it, but even then, you're going to want to use at least half his salary in free agency on a replacement.

I think our D is set next year. My priority is a goaltender, and some toughness (Frederick +). We'll have McDavid, Drai, RNH, Hyman and Arvidsson to carry the pace up front. Give guys like Savoie, Podkolzin, Tomasek and Hutson opportunities to truly grow as secondary scorers.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see O'Rielly on the team the season after. He's become my most untouchable prospect. I think he will become the dream 3C behind MDrai

Forgive me for being less than impressed but I would be curious to see how many of these signings work out or are just Hail Mary's on a team with no draft capital and little in the way of prospects. We went down this road of signing star Euro's and unsigned prospects before with Chiarelli and all it got us was an overpaid Koskinen long term.

I have fallen very far from a positive give the team the benefit of the doubt fan to a cynical skeptic of a fan after the "Summer of Jeff" and the "Season of Scottys Son".....

I will be appropriately happy if one of them work out. Mind you I have high hopes for Clattenberg. This team needs a ballsy shit disturber although KK will be apoplectic at anyone who throws more than 2 hits per game and causes chaos out there. I think he wants everyone to just get along and have no emotion whatsoever like the robot coach he is.

Sorry that is the cynical skeptic coming out in me again.....please someone help me....

Okay should they just do nothing?

What exactly is the point in complaining about an attempt to actually try to inject some talent into a draft capital starved team?

I don't think Marner is the right player for this team. Great playmaker during the regular season but would be another smaller, pass first player on the team. It would also take a massive contract to sign him and his best years have are most likely behind him. He was the player I wanted the Oilers to draft if we didn't win the draft lottery but it will take 14 millionx7 to get him under contract.

Soon to be 25 years of age, looked like crap in pre-season and has posted a 0.897sv% in Bako this season. The 1 game was exactly that, 1 game. He didn't look good in it but there's much more to my opinion than that 1 game. You think that he's a future NHL goalie? If so tell me why you feel that way because as of now, I don't see it.

I guess you are not comprehending what I wrote. Which has been a problem in this forum as of late and why it is getting to be a bigger waste of time coming on here anymore. Again, perhaps I am not articulating my thoughts very well which is on me.

I am not complaining, I am stating that we have seen this movie before and I wont hold my breath that any of these Euro or NCAA unsigned undrafted will amount to much and if they do then as I said I will be appropriately pleased.

I could jump up and down and cheer these signings but I won't. I am merely stating I have reservations. Having reservations is not complaining.

I'm loving what they are doing. I have been complaining for years that they don't work hard enough trying to recruit overseas and college talent. They aren't all going to work out but there is a chance one or two hit and become contributors going forward.

Bowman also has past success making signings like this. Hopefully he still has his touch

You must also think Bouchard is a #5 then too.

Makes sense on your evaluation since you dont really know what you're watching.
Dude you said Bouchard would have been Canada's best defensemen after Makar...

You said Bouchard is a top 5 in the league....

You also said Bouchard is a lock for the olympic team. (which he won't make)

All you do is tell people they are idiots and don't know anything. You must be a joy

There's no way to know how this will pan out, but this team is absolutely in a position to make these bets. Making several will push up the odds of hitting, imo.

Oh I absolutely agree that they have to make these bets. I am just saying that they are long shot bets at best and making a lot of long shot bets doesnt guarantee anything. Again - and please forgive me - my headspace on Bowman and Jackson is at absolute zero confidence in anything these 2 do. They are Chiarelli and Nicholson all over again, and I was stupid enough to support those two for a very long time.

Fool me once they say....

I guess time will tell. With Ekholm now out there will be more pressure on Walman. We'll see what he is made of.

As I watch him more my opinion will change, but right now I have him as a #4 or really good #5. (similar to Kulak)

Also all turnovers are not all the same. They are very situational. (for example Bouchard makes way worse turnovers than Makar)

They did this under Nicholson and Chiarelli, and under MacTavish and Lowe.

Do I need a swift kick in the arse for being so cynical after being a positive supporter of anything Oiler for eons? LOL Mrs5 would tell me to bend over and give me a boot!

No there is no comprehension issue.

It’s clearly negativity for the sake of being negative.

We may have seen a version of this before but it doesn’t mean you don’t continue to try to add bullets to the chamber in the hopes that you hit on one or two of them.

The issue with these boards lately are the pointlessly negative posts like yours that make this place a much less fun place to be.

So I don't see them as "long shots" because they have McDrai, everyone else is to fill the depth for the team to be better overall. Signing guys like (still to be) Hutson or Berezkin aren't to be top line wingers and lead the offense. If they can do that, home run, but you want them to be middle-6 to top-9 forwards to just make the team better.

You're lack of faith in this is completely justified, but I do like it for the team, because of the lack of magic beans.
