I can't think of another trade that's comparable to this one. It's not unheard of for a top scorer to be traded mid-season of course (Jagr was T-12th in the NHL in points and Lang was T-1st when the Caps dumped them in '04), but usually it's a bad team trading a rental for futures. I can't think of another time when two top 12 scorers were traded for each other in the middle of a season. This was the biggest in season trade since ______ ?
Well he's Finnish, so...I wonder if we were in on Rantanen at all given what Patrick has said about trade opportunities.
Probably don’t have the pieces and it’s a weird fit.
From a locale standpoint moving from Denver to Raleigh is a hard core meh unless he prefers a warmer climate and more anonymity.I like it for Carolina. Surely Aho can convince him to re-sign.
I mean, the Hockey culture in Raleigh is pretty damn good. And the quality of life there is also amazing. From a locale standpoint moving from Denver to Raleigh is a hard core meh unless he prefers a warmer climate and more anonymity.
But if one wants the best of both urban and rural worlds in close proximity lets admit its not on the east coast.I mean, the Hockey culture in Raleigh is pretty damn good. And the quality of life there is also amazing.
Problem is they need to re-sign Makar following season and already have fat MacKinnon contract. No way they could afford to give 96 the $14 mill he is looking forAssuming Canes are to re-sign him, they did very good. Rantanen is a top-15 player in the league regardless of position or salary. The fact that he was even available is surprising. I'd have traded the shit out of that prospect pool and whatever cap that needed to go the other way if he agreed to extend
As a player he'd fit right in. They might've been scared off by his contract demands.I wonder if we were in on Rantanen at all given what Patrick has said about trade opportunities.

I don't know what exactly the new cap ceiling is going to be but feels like those needed millions for his extension could have been somewhere in that update. Avs simply didn't want to cave in to the demands that were more like market value than team friendly , at least it looks like that.Problem is they need to re-sign Makar following season and already have fat MacKinnon contract. deal isn’t as bad as it looks for Chicago since they’re getting their own 3rd rounder back and it’ll be at the very top of the roundI think Carolina did great, Colorado did pretty well since they were going to lose him, Chicago…. No idea
exactly, the word is they aren’t going any higher on anyone’s AAV than MacKinnon’s deal, so that was pretty much a non-starter for Mikko. Sounds like the trade had been in the works for a while.I don't know what exactly the new cap ceiling is going to be but feels like those needed millions for his extension could have been somewhere in that update. Which is stupid if the salary cap indeed rises as much as they say over the next few seasons. A worse player than Rantanen will eventually get more money than MacKinnon willexactly, the word is they aren’t going any higher on anyone’s AAV than MacKinnon’s deal, so that was pretty much a non-starter for Mikko. The "internal cap" thing is always so funny to me. Like why should I take a bad deal just because my teammate did?exactly, the word is they aren’t going any higher on anyone’s AAV than MacKinnon’s deal, so that was pretty much a non-starter for Mikko. Yea I still wonder what a Caps offer that would've competed with Carolina would look like. Strome + McMichael??We are weird with Finnish players. It was never gonna happen here.
I lived in Colorado for a while growing up (parents worked on govt contracts for Air Force). Brother was born there. It’s a fun place. Colorado or Utah are possible landing spots for us as empty nesters. But ultimately I am an east coast guy.But if one wants the best of both urban and rural worlds in close proximity lets admit its not on the east coast.
Don't get me wrong here I'm a big fans of NC in everything other than the politics side. My brother was born in Charlotte we lived there about until I was in the 2nd grade (came from SF area in '70).
Side bar family moved to Mt. Vernon in VA right about 2nd grade and confronting Fairfax County school system which is one of the top in the country still. They tested me and were like nah you need to stay in 2nd as Charlotte school system in the early 70s not great. Then went out to Chicago suburbs for three years before coming back to Fairfax County in VA in '80. Luckily had no issues though was still one of the oldest in my HS draft class of almost 600. Think I was the 19th oldest in the class.
Or you could ask it like……”should I also take a lesser deal to try and help build a winner here like one of our best players also did?”The "internal cap" thing is always so funny to me. Like why should I take a bad deal just because my teammate did?
Yea I totally get it from a team perspective but if I was a player I would definitely tell the team to F off.Or you could ask it like……”should I also take a lesser deal to try and help build a winner here like one of our best players also did?”
“If he wants 14, he can F off”…..was clearly Colorado’s reply.
Sadly he won’t get that chance as they beat him to it.Yea I totally get it from a team perspective but if I was a player I would definitely tell the team to F off.
