My theory is that he owns some unsavoury people a lot of money so he has valid reasons to fear for his safety if he were to show up in Vegas.

All parties involved just came together kill this thing before it gets any bigger.

Different. Vegas is wholly free of the cap hit as if it never existed. Caps on the other hand can spend more, but they can't bank anything toward the deadline.

I think this is awful. I'm sorry for what Lehner is dealing with, but there are mechanisms in the CBA for when a player is either too unwell to play or simply doesn't show up. There's precisely zero reasons that those should not have applied in this case.
I haven't read anything about the situation so I could be 100% wrong, and I'm going by context, but the league "breaking" its own rules for something involving a "mental health" issue suggests there might be some concern about liability.

yea I think the fact that this is going ahead at all means that Lehner is in the wrong and VGK could've terminated the contract (and thus got out of the cap anyways) if they wanted.

I'm surprised this happened still because it's something every party (except maybe Lehner) hates doing. Teams (and therefore the league) have a pretty hard line on not paying salary outside the structures of the salary cap and players and the union have a hard line on contracts being guaranteed. This seems to be an "everyone loses" situation and I wouldn't be shocked if the league and PA come out with a joint "this will not be used as precedent" statement like they did after Perry last year.

Goddamnit - I thought the regular season actually started tonight but it's just the one game.

Then I go check the Caps schedule and they are literally a WEEK away from their first game!

Whatever is going on with the Lehner, it is nefarious. Gotta be a wild story buried in there. I’d love to know the actual truth, but we will probably never know.

I'd guess it has something to do with his bipolar disorder. Untreated or improperly treated, that condition can really mess with people.

100% speculation, but that's what I've got.

It’s hard to speculate because we don’t know. but that speculation is as good as any other. I don’t buy the whole gambling debt thing. The thing that makes this interesting is that it is really the same as LTIR but removes any obligation to Lehner. Except his health, which i hope heals, this is a nothing burger for anyone else unless people just want something to bitch about.

Again, not the same as LTIR. Vegas can now bank the equivalent of Lehner’s salary in cap space. With LTIR you cannot bank the space.

Edit: Friedge noted on 32 Thoughts that Vegas would have had a very good case to get out of Lehner’s deal anyhow though since he didn’t report, so it may be 6 or a half-dozen in the end. And this way Lehner gets his money.

The issue I have is that Lehner didn't earn - and doesn't deserve - that money.

If Vegas are going to give away millions of dollars give it to charity.

Eh... I'm less bothered by a guy in a shit situation getting some relief than I would be if Vegas was getting yet another free pass.

8.25 per for Swayman. T-4 in the league…
Apparently they were quibbling over 8x8 vs 8x8.5 and Swayman (or rather his agent) was holding out.

So they met in the middle. And he got a no trade clause. That's ALOT of term and money for a goalie who hasn't truly established himself as the real deal. (though he definitely has some impressive regular season and playoff numbers). But I can't stand the Bruins so I don't care if it goes bad for them.

And watching Swayman in the "Faceoff - Inside the NHL" series - glad he didn't have to give up his day job, cos his singing sucks

Don't blame him. Nylander got 11.5 and he's just a top 10 winger. The best goalie in the game should get more than that.

He's their MVP. Panarin contract was 14.29% at the start which would be 13.2m AAV if cap is at 92.5m after this season so keep going up Igor!

That contract is going to be a silly one.

Meanwhile I think we've rid ourselves of all former Penguins. (But that may have been the case last season too and I just didn't pay close attention.)
