I don't understand how the NHL has a player the level of McDavid and he isn't on every sports platform he can be. This league is just so awful at building up narratives or enabling personalities. Just held back by ineptitude at the top.
I agree but Mcdavid has the personality of a cardboard boxI don't understand how the NHL has a player the level of McDavid and he isn't on every sports platform he can be. This league is just so awful at building up narratives or enabling personalities. Just held back by ineptitude at the top.
He's crazy talented and immensely boring. I once noted on here that he seems passionless and was roundly flamed, but it's this. He's so very bland...If he played in NY or Boston or Pittsburgh, it would be different….he also looks like anyone else from the Canadian Clone Hockey Army and on the surface, doesn’t appear to have a whole lot of personality to market.
I'd add LAK another market that if he had ended up there would get much more attention. If he played in NY or Boston or Pittsburgh, it would be different….he also looks like anyone else from the Canadian Clone Hockey Army and on the surface, doesn’t appear to have a whole lot of personality to market.
Almost any US market outside of maybe CBJ and AZ would be better than Edmonton.I'd add LAK another market that if he had ended up there would get much more attention.
grossPanthers' Staal bros. decline to don Pride jerseys
Eric and Marc Staal didn't participate in pregame skate Thursday because they declined to wear the Panthers' Pride Night sweaters, citing their religious beliefs.www.espn.com
maybe there is a movement lol…

I guess Eric Staal must have taken up his religion in the last two years. Good for him for finding God so late in life!
Eric Staal probably didn't even know the rainbow stuff he was wearing for years was LGBT related. Just thought "oh man cool a rainbow jersey, nice"
Only the NHL could f*** the football this badly on something that was supposed to be an innocent and welcoming gesture. This is literally the lowest hanging fruit on the tree of initiatives they could undertake to show that hockey isn’t just for straight, rich, white kids and they’ve turned it into an embarrassing spectacle. We even have one organization saying it’s protection for their Russian born players because there’s a no-gay propaganda law in Russia. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so pathetic. And I’m not even going to touch on the hypocrisy shown by the players claiming to abstain in the name of religion because it’s an indefensible position that’s blown to bits with even the slightest bit of effort and we’ve also already moved on from that discussion.Provorov accidentally became the most influential player in the NHL loool
I think it honestly didn't occur to many players they could refuse before. It's not some deep seated beliefs they held. They probably just think being gay is icky but didn't care too much about it before until someone opened Provorov's box.

No other league continues to bungle PR at every available opportunity and tells their fans to get f***ed quite like the NHL. Its really something to behold and they should be applauded for being as bad at their jobs as they are since it’s really tough to pull it off.
How are we not hearing from them already? They simply wouldn’t allow any uniform ads that would be in doubt. If money were no object, I would 100% buy NHL helmet or jersey ad space to promote HRC, or better yet Act Up. Paid promotion. Then see how the league handles any dissenters. The whole thing is a disgrace from top to bottom. And if the LGBTQ community decides to kick up a fuss/start a boycott/etc, they've shown themselves to be a formidable foe. NHL has it coming IMO.
Well, the Pride group in NYC put out a statement when the Rags chickened out, but they have a long-standing relationship with the team so maybe they don't want to go full hostile right away. How are we not hearing from them already? They simply wouldn’t allow any uniform ads that would be in doubt.
I think you would see a battle the NHL doesn’t want to get into….something that pits the players against popular opinion/causes. I think the NHL would politely decline the offer.Well, the Pride group in NYC put out a statement when the Rags chickened out, but they have a long-standing relationship with the team so maybe they don't want to go full hostile right away.
As for the ads, money talks. If Tim Cook decided to pay them some preposterous amount for a small HRC patch on the sweater, would they really turn him down? But either way, it ain't happening so...
Well the WC thing was about protesting the host country which is a bit different, but I take your point.I think you would see a battle the NHL doesn’t want to get into….something that pits the players against popular opinion/causes. I think the NHL would politely decline the offer.
Soccer already outlawed something similar at the WC when some teams wanted to show support.
Explaining FIFA's OneLove armband U-turn at the World Cup
Another high-profile FIFA U-turn has overshadowed the action at the World Cup. Why were captains like Harry Kane forced to wear a different armband?www.espn.com
They‘re (the NHL) already punting to the players by leaving it at the team level.
